General :: Messed Up And Lost Graphical Desktop And Login Screen?

Jun 14, 2010

I was in the middle of deleting the Xine movie player, and clicked a box wrong. I lost everything possible on the graphical desktop as well as a log in screen for Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). Since then I did a few things:1. apt-get install ubuntu-desktop2. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop3. apt-get remove kubuntu-desktopAfter all this, I still have the login screen for Kubuntu. But I don't want that. I want to get back to the Ubuntu login screen, and the orange colored desktop. Right now -- after I log in -- I only have a terminal to use. And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?

I'll start by admitting I'm bad at backing things up. My situation is that I have a desktop that was in storage for a year, and I don't have the login name or password anymore. Is there anyway to get around this roadblock, say by upgrading? I'd really like to save the files on the HD.If I can boot up in protected mode and login as root,it seems that I should be able to change the login and pwd.

Ubuntu Servers :: NIS Accounts Lost Group Memberships On SSH Login?

May 3, 2010

We have a small network consists of 5 servers, providing SSH for several groups of users. We want the users (e.g., me) be able to log in to any of the servers with their own account. So, we define the user accounts in a server that runs NIS service, and configure all the other servers as NIS clients. We also defined several groups for different user groups, so some users belong to several groups. All the user information is populated by NIS. This setup is working in Ubuntu 8.04, AMD64.

Now I upgrade the servers to Ubuntu 10.04 64Bit. The problem is, now if I log in to one of the NIS client servers using SSH, my group membership is lost. However, when I log in directly to the server, the group membership is retained. For example, in the /etc/group file, I defined the user tliu as a number of awww group:

Code:

tliu:x:1004:
agroup:!:2000:tliu,ian,verickson
awww:!:2010:tliu,bstark,verickson

I upgrade my Kubuntu to 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) and I lost taskbar. Besides, I can't right-click on desktop. In fact I can, but nothing happens. Is that some Plasma problem? I red that Kicker is replaced by some Plasma feature. Could it be because of Conky (some desktop layouts)? I tried to prevent it, but I can't. I killed all Conky instances, and removed it from .kde/Autostart, but it still runs on every start-up.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lost Video Sync Connection At Login (gdm Start)

Jan 23, 2011

I recently purchased a new motherboard and processor to replace an existing system. I transferred the video card. OS remains the same, Ubuntu 10.10 x64. Video worked fine in the first system (eVGA motherboard, Intel E6600 CPU, 4GB RAM), but the old motherboard had a SATA controller issue. New system: Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5, AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb, 8GB RAM

Transferred hardware:
Graphics: eVGA nVidia 8800GT,
Monitor 0: Hanns-G JW199D 1440x900@60Hz
Monitor 1: Gateway FPD1975W 1440x900@60Hz

The Problem:

1. Fresh OS install, everything starts up as expected, login, etc.
2. I use the Additional Drivers link from the menu and select the recommended nVidia driver and enable it.
3. After reboot, the following things happen:
3a. BIOS
3b. Ubuntu startup scripts
3c. Ubuntu logo with spinning dots
3d. Monitor goes black
3e. Monitor notifies it has lost sync

I believe 3d is where I would normally get the login dialog. I can use failsafe mode, but everything I've tried to fix the graphics display hasn't worked. I've even tried to load the latest nVidia driver, nvidia-config, nvidia-settings, etc. There are some options I've tried where the nvidia-x command returns "can't find device". I've tried to modify the xorg.conf file, to no success.

Any ideas what I can do to resolve the error? I'm not that strong on the xorg.conf file, but all I've read is that it's not too necessary anymore. Though, it was modified in my old system to get Twinview working. I've looked through a bunch of log files, but I may not have been looking in the correct log file.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost My Desktop After Second Restart Of Lucid

May 1, 2010

Working with an old desktop that had been running 8.04 Update failed so I installed from a LiveCD. Dual boot with XP. System runs great off of the CD. After installation of 10.04 and a restart, the system worked well. Tried lots of stuff off the Gnome menus. Restarted and booted XP. That worked too.

On my next restart I selected Ubuntu from the grub menu and the system gave me the sign in requester. I signed in but the desktop never appeared. All I got was the background and a mouse pointer.

Right clicking the mouse brings up a 7 item menu that includes items for creating a folder, creating a file, ....., choose a new background. The menu works. If I click create a file an icon for a new file appears on the screen. Clicking on the icon brings up a window running gedit. Choosing the new background item brings up a window with candidate new backgrounds. I have no idea how to get the gnome desktop back. The sign in screen has a bar at the bottom that shows Gnome is the default session setting. Booting into XP continues to work.

I've tried changing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line in the /etc/default/grub to add nomodeset. That didn't help.

Fedora Installation :: F13 User Lost After Creation - Automatic Login

Sep 28, 2010

I have a windows 7 ultimate host machine, installed oracle virtual box on it. Made a iso image to boot fr fedora. All this is fine when the installation is complete, it asks for reboot. Reboot done. Then I went to terminal. Did a SU - root to get into the root. Then I did a firstboot command to enter information. I created a user for myself and at the end rebooted the virtual box.

When it starts up, it does not show my user. It just shows "Automatic Login" and it logs in as Live System User. Even if I try to switch user then it gave me a authentication failure when I enter the credentials of the user which I created. If I try to create users manually using system administration, the user is lost after reboot. I have tried all possible steps...as instructed on the net.

OpenSUSE :: Panel Lost From Fresh KDE Desktop?

I have placed the icons back, all works correctly, though I would like to know how to recreate this transparent rectangular panel.
