Ubuntu :: Lost All Bars And Tools From Desktop?

May 20, 2011

I am Using Natty, the 64 bit edition and I noticed it was running slow. I chaked and one of my memories died on me and I am left with just 512 MB of memory. Since it will be a few days to buy a new memory I wanted to run the system on the lowest possible eyecandy, so I went to compiz configurator and sily me, I deactivated the Ubuntu one bar thinking i wold get the old bar theme, but what happend is that i have no bars whatsoever, just a clean desktop. I cannot open any programs at all like that. I am wrintg this from one of the user accounts, but the account i messed up is the adminitrator, so i need to get it up and running soon.

Ubuntu :: Lost Top And Side Bars In Nautilus?

Mar 4, 2010

After starting up today, I noticed that nautilus has suddenly become quite minimalistic (see screenshot). Additionally, each folder opens in a new window (didn't before) and turns gray when it is opened. It looks the same running as root (except not themed, of course).

I've already done

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge nautilus
sudo apt-get install nautilus nautilus-share gnome-session

Also, gksu no longer works properly. It always reports incorrect password, even when the password is correct. Luckily, gksudo does work. I don't know if this is related.

Ubuntu :: Can't Use Desktop Bars On New Install

May 7, 2010

I didn't like the bar on top so I switched it to be on the bottom while the bottom bar was still there. On top of that, I wasn't thinking and dropped the pixel size for the bar from 24 to 23. I guess I assumed that the bars would either combine or one would be replaced; I don't know. But now I can't use anything from either bar, even though it shows some of the information from the first one. When I click it, it doesn't do anything. It's "under" the other bar, so to speak, rendering both of them useless.

Luckily I am dual-booting from Win7, so I can still use my system. I noticed that Ubuntu loads much slower than Win7, which really surprised me. It could be that the drivers need to be installed on Ubuntu, but I can't get to the driver installer.

should I do an uninstall, reinstall, and try not to be such an idiot next time?

General :: Linpus Lite - Desktop Shows Black And White Bars

Jun 10, 2010

I prefer ubuntu (which I have been meaning to install for a while) but my netbook currently has linpus lite on it. (It's an acer aspire one). One night I left the netbook sitting open (forgot to close it), and when I went to use it the next day, when I started it up, the desktop did not show the normal icons in the background. It still showed the bar at the bottom with the connection icon, power icon, etc. as well as the "Internet" search bar in the top right corner.

But instead of the usual linpus desktop icons, there are just black and white horizontal bars, with some coloured dots in the black bars. I can still use the terminal to open firefox, and presumably other programs. It still connects to wifi signals, and the bottom bar looks normal and functional. I am posting this message right now with my netbook, and it doesn't seem to have lost any functionality. I would much rather just click on things most of the time instead of opening terminal for everything.

Ubuntu Servers :: Can Server Tools Be Adapted To Desktop Version?

Aug 12, 2010

Is it possible to install some administrative tools under the System -> Administration tab of the Desktop edition of Ubuntu, so that xinetd, chkconfig, netservices, etc can be controlled? I am left with an uneasy feeling about my Desktop version, and finding that it is running services that I really do not want to allow. Apache2 is running for example, but I really am not a web server (yet). Another service is strigi, the indexer. I prefer to have it turned off at times. What administrative tools does Ubuntu offer that can be placed in the sys-admin tab?

I am a ubuntu novice. I am running 10.04 LTS on a Lenova laptop. Runs fine. Yesterday upgraded firefox and upgraded Java 6 from update 20 to update 24 so that I could use the Zotero bibiliographic program in FF. After the upgrade and restart, the windows title bar that includes minimize, maximize and close buttons has disappeared from all windows that I open except google chrome. If I open and app, or FF, or the dvd player, title bar is gone. I have noticed that Java updates have caused similar problems before but none of the prescribed steps seems to have changed my system

Ubuntu :: Lost Taskbar In 10.04 - Can't Right-click On Desktop

May 1, 2010

I upgrade my Kubuntu to 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) and I lost taskbar. Besides, I can't right-click on desktop. In fact I can, but nothing happens. Is that some Plasma problem? I red that Kicker is replaced by some Plasma feature. Could it be because of Conky (some desktop layouts)? I tried to prevent it, but I can't. I killed all Conky instances, and removed it from .kde/Autostart, but it still runs on every start-up.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost My Desktop After Second Restart Of Lucid

May 1, 2010

Working with an old desktop that had been running 8.04 Update failed so I installed from a LiveCD. Dual boot with XP. System runs great off of the CD. After installation of 10.04 and a restart, the system worked well. Tried lots of stuff off the Gnome menus. Restarted and booted XP. That worked too.

On my next restart I selected Ubuntu from the grub menu and the system gave me the sign in requester. I signed in but the desktop never appeared. All I got was the background and a mouse pointer.

Right clicking the mouse brings up a 7 item menu that includes items for creating a folder, creating a file, ....., choose a new background. The menu works. If I click create a file an icon for a new file appears on the screen. Clicking on the icon brings up a window running gedit. Choosing the new background item brings up a window with candidate new backgrounds. I have no idea how to get the gnome desktop back. The sign in screen has a bar at the bottom that shows Gnome is the default session setting. Booting into XP continues to work.

I've tried changing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line in the /etc/default/grub to add nomodeset. That didn't help.

In the course of modifying the desktop icons, this was deleted. I have looked, searched, Google'd etc, to find a process to restore this transparent folder. No luck so far. I have placed the icons back, all works correctly, though I would like to know how to recreate this transparent rectangular panel. It is funny because, I have other network mounts which share the same server, and there icons are appearing, and this particular share just does not show up with the icon, even if I try mounting it different locations in the filesystem. Any ideas. I really like those cute icons on my desktop.
