Ubuntu Installation :: Lost My Desktop After Second Restart Of Lucid

May 1, 2010

Working with an old desktop that had been running 8.04 Update failed so I installed from a LiveCD. Dual boot with XP. System runs great off of the CD. After installation of 10.04 and a restart, the system worked well. Tried lots of stuff off the Gnome menus. Restarted and booted XP. That worked too.

On my next restart I selected Ubuntu from the grub menu and the system gave me the sign in requester. I signed in but the desktop never appeared. All I got was the background and a mouse pointer.

Right clicking the mouse brings up a 7 item menu that includes items for creating a folder, creating a file, ....., choose a new background. The menu works. If I click create a file an icon for a new file appears on the screen. Clicking on the icon brings up a window running gedit. Choosing the new background item brings up a window with candidate new backgrounds. I have no idea how to get the gnome desktop back. The sign in screen has a bar at the bottom that shows Gnome is the default session setting. Booting into XP continues to work.

I've tried changing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line in the /etc/default/grub to add nomodeset. That didn't help.

Ubuntu Installation :: Panel Transparency Is Lost On Restart?

May 2, 2011

I have had no issue with the panel's transparency in previous Ubuntu versions. This all started w/ Natty. I set up transparency (right click on panel, Nav through Properties > Background, Check "Solid Color," slide bar to my preferred opacity, & click "Close." The panel looks as follows: But when I restart the computer it goes grey:

killall command doesn't work, I have moved the panel, I have created a new one. The "closest" I found were people complaining (back in December) that the theme switched to grey. But I don't think the panel is taking up another theme, it is simply not painting the transparent image.

I didn't like Unity so I disabled it (still installed). I also removed indicator-me and indicator-messenger via synaptic as I have since Lucid Lynx. I removed the black bubble notifications and removed the shutdown/logout/restart confirmation/countdown prompt w/ a couple of code-hacks I found online as I have since Jaunty Jackalope. I also tried to change the opacity though an option inside Compiz's "Opacity, Brightness and Saturation". This also made AWN icons transparent so I undid it. I use the "Glossy P" theme w/ "Snow Apple" icons.

Ubuntu :: Lost Power During Lucid Lynx Installation

May 1, 2010

While leaving my laptop to install the upgrades, I hadn't noticed how the power cord had slipped loose. When I came back my computer must have shut off due to battery loss. When I booted up my computer again, I couldn't boot up Ubuntu under any of the kernels, -20,-19, etc. I get cryptic messages such as "unable to enumerate USB device on port 2," device not accepting messages," and "device descriptor read." i definitely intend to recover my data. I had been upgrading from 9.10 to the latest version of lucid lynx.

I tried to upgrade my kubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as given here. Actually I wanted to upgrade to kubuntu. The download completed successfully. However, while upgrading the power went off and left the computer in bad state. Now I see multiple two entries for both

in grub. Since I am not that familiar with ubuntu(in general linux), I would like
When I tried to boot in first two of these I get the following error message and it remains in command-line mode.

However, the mount points are not having anything. It is like nothing got mounted. I would suspect there should be some way where I should be able to locate the downloaded upgrade stuff and apply it afresh again from start. Is this something possible?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Emails , Bookmarks And Pictures After Upgrade To Lucid / Need Back

May 5, 2010

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) a few days ago (without backing up any data first). At first everything seemed fine but yesterday three things happened:

1. All my emails and address book have disappeared in Thunderbird. When I started Thunderbird, it took me through the wizard and seems to have overwritten my profile with a new one. There is only one profile in the Thunderbird folder and it seems to contain no emails and only a new, blank address book (the small size of the folder backs this up. I searched the hard drive but found no other emails or address book files.

2. My bookmarks have disappeared from Google Chrome. Again, it seems to have created a new, blank bookmark file. The bookmark.bak file is similarly blank and when I search I can find no other bookmark files.

3. The Pictures folder (in the home folder) is now empty; suggesting that ubuntu has either overwritten the Pictures folder with a new blank folder or deleted all the files in it. Again, when I search the hard drive for jpg files, it doesn't find any of the pictures that were in the Pictures folder.

Ubuntu Installation :: HP Pavilion A6750t Desktop Won't Load After Restart System?

Sep 5, 2010

I tried to do a clean install of 10.04 on the above desktop. It was previously running 9.10 fine.

I booted with a 10.04 live CD, used Gparted to delete the previous partition that 9.10 was in. Installed 10.04 and chose the option to install in the largest continuous free disc space.

The installation seemed to go fine, but when I re-start the system, GRUB loads, I select Linux, then I get a flashing cursor and the monitor goes to sleep as it shows like it is getting no signal.

When I boot Vista on the same system it works fine.

From the sound of the hard drive, I am guessing that it is not loading the Ubuntu OS, I don't think this is a video driver problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Only Failsafe Brings Up Panel/desktop After Lucid Upgrade

May 25, 2010

I've recently upgraded to Lucid, [url]

E.g., if I log in to a normal Gnome session, I have no panel or any controls whatsoever, just the desktop background and nothing else. Mouse works, but no mouse click of any sort brings up any menu. The only keystroke combo that works is CTRL-ALT-DEL which lets me cleanly reboot.

Logging in to Gnome-Failsafe works fine (that's where I am now). Even if I reconfigure the graphics in failsafe, however, it doesn't seem to fix the problem next reboot.

First question: What do I have to do to copy the working Gnome-failsafe info to Gnome regular?

Second question: What should I do to start the graphic config again from scratch? I'm guessing my problem might have something to do with my having an older Nvidia card and getting conflicts between the proprietary drivers and the 'nouveau' open source drivers, and my current efforts to fix things have probably left a mess of config files somewhere, but I'm not entirely up on how these things are configured nowadays, and understand that /etc/X11/xorg.conf isn't all there is to it anymore. (I used to know how to muck about with this stuff, but because the Ubuntu developers have done such fabulous work in getting things so they 'just work', users like me have had the luxury of not having to worry about figuring it out ourselves for quite a while; thanks are definitely in order there!)

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Upgrade: Restore Default Desktop And Font Settings?

May 18, 2010

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid recently. Before upgrading, I had customized my desktop on Karmic with Compiz, Emerald and new set of fonts. After upgrade (which appears to have gone smoothly, yay!), my desktop retained the previous appearance settings. I want to try the factory default gnome appearance settings for Lucid and still stuck with restoring fonts.

What I have done till now:

0. Enabled Visual Effects from Appearance menu.
1. Theme -> Changed to Human
2. Window Manager -> Still using Compiz
3. Window Decorator -> Switched from Emerald to GTK
4. Font -> Changed first 3 font types in the Font tab to Sans, size 10, 4th to Sans Bold and 5th to Monochrome. Rendering -> subpixel smoothing (LCD)

What I want:

1. Is this the default setting? Have I missed anything in restoring default settings?

2. I have done too many changes to firefox font rendering over time. How do I restore default 10.04 font settings for Firefox? I would ideally love to have an option in Ubuntu which would help me restore factory settings.

Ubuntu :: Minimal Install W/LXDE Lost Shutdown / Restart Options

Sep 4, 2010

I'm working on getting a stripped down Ubuntu Lucid installed on an old POS HP PC for a friend. Because it only has 256 MB RAM, I used a minimal CD and the installed lxde as the GUI.Today I was working on it and installed the latest updates and Openoffice-Writer. After rebooting, the shutdown button only gives me Hibernate, Log Out and Cancel. I lost Shut Down and Restart. Searching w/Google shows solutions for other distros such as Arch and Mint, but none that worked for Ubuntu w/LXDE. Either the files to edit don't exist, the groups don't exist (one site said to add the user to the "power" group, no such thing in 'buntu) or the options don't exist (such as System->Administration, which isn't in the menu at all).

HAL and dbus are running, which was the other thing some sites mentioned. So, how do I get the shutdown and restart buttons back? The people that will be getting this machine aren't going to know how to go to a terminal and type "sudo shutdown -h now" everytime they want to shut down.I know the buttons existed before installing the latest updates.

Ubuntu Installation :: Preseed-file Not Working As Expected On Lucid Desktop Install - Read

Jul 30, 2010

I have a problem to get it to work. The installer seems to read the preseed-file alright, and some of the values defined in the preseed-file are taken into account. The questions regarding locale, keyboard layout and time zone are answered using the preseed-file, but in the user account creation-step the process goes wrong. The Full name-field is obtained from the preseed-file, but the login-name is generated by the installer and not read from the preseed. Also the password-fields are empty and not filled in. Also the script that I've defined with preseed/late_command is never run.

I tried searching the forums but no-one had exactly this kind of problem, so it makes me think that this has to be some trivial error I'm doing. Could someone take a look at these configs and see if there's something wrong with them? How should I continue resolving this?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: NVidia Driver Configuration Lost After Restart

xorg-x11-driver-vido-nouveau 0.0.15_20100401_bfb95cc-1.10
libXNVCtrl 256.35-0.pm.2.1

Now my problem is everytime I save the configuration for
- the open GL settings
- the anti aliasing settings
- the powermizing settings
with the GUI-programm NVIDIA X Server Settings under GNOME

Every setting is lost completely after a restart of my system and the defaults are reset even if i save the configuration in the menu nvidia-settings configuration of the GUI-programm NVIDIA X Server Settings. Is there a possibility to SAVE the settings? They should stay after a reboot.
I think this is a issue very spread under several Linux distributions. I can't understand the source of the mistake or bug.

Ubuntu :: Successful Lucid Install - I / O Error On Restart

Jul 9, 2010

I just installed lucid, Ubuntu 10.04. The first time I screwed it up by removing the CD to early. Do not remove CD until the tray opens by itself or until the system restarted. The second attempt took only 21 minutes. The only input required from me was the time zone, my name and password. After it restarted I had to right click on the network icon and enter the name of my router (Belkin) and the open "edit connections" and enter the network password. All done.

I did have one questionable moment though. When I clicked on "restart" I got a black screen with this message scrolled all the way down the screen...
"(123.2#####) end request: i/o error, dev sr0, sector 46####".
The pc was froze up, or at least stalled at this point. I hit the reset button and all was well. Is a repair recommended or was that just a technicality that really meant nothing? I intend to continue this thread with updates as I reload all my garbage.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Lost DSL Connection

Sep 13, 2010

The computer is a K9n6pgm2+ mainboard w/2gig of RAM and an AMD Phenom Triple Core. My Harddrives are /dev/sda=320gig and /dev/sdb=80gig. Resident on sda is Ubuntu 10.04 (fresh install) w/Windows XP installed at the final 40 gigs, installed after Ubuntu install and then used the 9.10 live CD to reinstall GRUB. On /dev/sdb is Ubuntu 9.10.I installed the fresh Lucid install 3 months ago when I purchased the 320 gig HDD to replace the failing 40 gig and it has run perfectly until yesterday. I presently have a 2Wire Modem located at 172.16.0.1 and I have a new Motorola in the mail but I presently cannot get Lucid to find my internet connection.

If I boot into XP everything is fine. i can go all over the net. If I boot into Karmic, all is well. I am typing this in Karmic so it is strictly a Lucid problem and I have tried all that I know to do and I really want my Lucid install back.

Fedora :: Logout And Cancel Are Only Options In KDE Menu / Lost Ability To Do A Shutdown Or Restart?

Dec 16, 2008

I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.

I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:

kde-filesystem.noarch 4-20.fc10 installed
kde-settings.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
kde-settings-kdm.noarch 4.1-4.20081031svn.fc10 installed
code....

I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.

Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.

Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.

Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.

These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.
