My laptop has Ubuntu 10.04 LTS running in a virtual machine. Just couple hours ago my computer ran out of batteries. When restarted it and started virtual machine and Ubuntu, 90% of stuff ithat was in my desktop is gone!!!
They are not on desktop and if I browse desktop with nautilus, the files are not there. They are not in the recent documents either.
My wife has taken over the desktop (ubuntu 14.04 LTS). I've setup a second wireless router, dedicated to the MAC address of my laptop (debian) and using ssh I can view my email (thunderbird), but I'm not sure what to do to view woodworking videos without downloading. So, do I need to setup tunneling, do I need to view the windowmanager or is there an way to run videos? Anyway I've come along way using HOWTo's with breaking debian. Not sure how to proceed.
Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.
I think I made one tweak too far and as a result have lost my desktop - no top panel, launcher just a blank screen with my desktop background. I've created a new user and everything is fine under that account so I don't think it is terminal. which files I should delete/replace to restore the desktop back to it's default settings? I've deleted the .gnome2, .gconf and .gconfd folders but that has not solved the problem.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was moving a folder using Nautilus from an internal drive to a USB drive when suddenly, the power failed and the system rebooted before the UPS could go into backup. After I booted the PC again, half the files are are in neither of the drives. Do they go into a temporary folder first? There's nothing in /tmp and there's no Lost+Found folder. Is there anyway to get back those files? I'll always copy and delete from now on instead of moving.

I upgrade my Kubuntu to 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) and I lost taskbar. Besides, I can't right-click on desktop. In fact I can, but nothing happens. Is that some Plasma problem? I red that Kicker is replaced by some Plasma feature. Could it be because of Conky (some desktop layouts)? I tried to prevent it, but I can't. I killed all Conky instances, and removed it from .kde/Autostart, but it still runs on every start-up.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am Using Natty, the 64 bit edition and I noticed it was running slow. I chaked and one of my memories died on me and I am left with just 512 MB of memory. Since it will be a few days to buy a new memory I wanted to run the system on the lowest possible eyecandy, so I went to compiz configurator and sily me, I deactivated the Ubuntu one bar thinking i wold get the old bar theme, but what happend is that i have no bars whatsoever, just a clean desktop. I cannot open any programs at all like that. I am wrintg this from one of the user accounts, but the account i messed up is the adminitrator, so i need to get it up and running soon.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWorking with an old desktop that had been running 8.04 Update failed so I installed from a LiveCD. Dual boot with XP. System runs great off of the CD. After installation of 10.04 and a restart, the system worked well. Tried lots of stuff off the Gnome menus. Restarted and booted XP. That worked too.
On my next restart I selected Ubuntu from the grub menu and the system gave me the sign in requester. I signed in but the desktop never appeared. All I got was the background and a mouse pointer.
Right clicking the mouse brings up a 7 item menu that includes items for creating a folder, creating a file, ....., choose a new background. The menu works. If I click create a file an icon for a new file appears on the screen. Clicking on the icon brings up a window running gedit. Choosing the new background item brings up a window with candidate new backgrounds. I have no idea how to get the gnome desktop back. The sign in screen has a bar at the bottom that shows Gnome is the default session setting. Booting into XP continues to work.
I've tried changing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line in the /etc/default/grub to add nomodeset. That didn't help.
Desktop lost (Cinnamon 2.2.16 for me) after a recent dist-upgrade in Sid. I'm new to Sid, so is this normal?

I can logto another account on my machine and it's there in the panel with the other widgets. Go back to my regular user account and its gone. How do I add it back? I have tried using "add widgets from the panel but I do not find it there .

I upgraded to ubuntustudio last night while I was sleeping, and when I woke up this morning and restarted the laptop the sleek desktop environment was gone. I actually liked that layout. I can't find a way in the settings to re-enable it. en uninstalled the ubuntustudio suite and restarted the system. Nothing changed. Do I have to reinstall 11.04?I really love the new layout..as a side note, I had a small bug with it when I tried to enable the compiz effects. when I enabled the rotating cube and restarted the system the menus were gone and it was only a blank desktop
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter a fresh 11.2 KDE install on a second PC, the starting desktop exhibited a transparent panel, with "Desktop Folder" as a title, and five (5) icons. In the course of modifying the desktop icons, this was deleted. I have looked, searched, Google'd etc, to find a process to restore this transparent folder. No luck so far. I have placed the icons back, all works correctly, though I would like to know how to recreate this transparent rectangular panel. (My other two Linux PC's are Gnome (one openSUSE 11.2 and one Ubuntu 9.10).

So I was messing around with LVM trying to turn 3 ~300GB drives into one LVM under 1TB. I scrapped the idea after not being able to combine hdc and hdd into a VG called doctor/frankenstein while using hde as swap space to move the single ext3 primaries onto the VG. I am now battling to recover the contents of hdc back!

It is funny because, I have other network mounts which share the same server, and there icons are appearing, and this particular share just does not show up with the icon, even if I try mounting it different locations in the filesystem. I've just upgraded to Squeeze from Lenny using the instructions found here URL... After completing the upgrade and re-booting the system informed me that "gnome.desktop is not installed" and throws me into XFCE. Googling suggested trying apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment which I did. On reboot I no longer get the "gnome-desktop is not installed", but the login still throws me into XFCE.How do I get my gnome desktop back?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis is a new, two days since release 11.2 install on a freshly formatted drive. I lost the KDE 4.3 default semitransparent Desktop Window with all the desktop folders. I believe what happened was when the mouse went across this window, the window side pop out with the X at the bottom appeared, the mouse pointer continued onto the "old style" desktop far away from this pop out and I clicked on blank "old style" desktop. This window appears to have treated this as selecting the X in the pop out, which I probably went over without clicking on my way past it and this window is gone. I have changed to "folder view" since I can't figure out how to restore this window for the "default desktop view".
How do you restore the semitransparent default Desktop Window when its no longer in its own "view"? The jury is still out on the obviously improved, but still not ready for prime-time KDE 4.3. I feel like a Microsoft OS user being forced into using a "new" burdensome/buggy interface I don't want or need at all. Even the KDE 4.3 manual admits some things (only some?) will not work as expected. The KDE 3.5 interface did everything I "needed" quickly and without problems. I've already had enough abuse from MS, please stop emulating them.
I have lost some icons from my desktop, they are, firefox, yast, thunderbird, emacs, the space and the names are still there, and when I hover the mouse over the space, it is highlighted as it should be. The application opens and runs as normal when I click on the space where the icon should be. The icons are also missing from the favorites bar on the left side and also from the panel top left when the app is running.I have tried, rebuilding the icon cache in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor', and also all othercon caches for that matter, and no difference. I tried uninstalling and installing the app, no differenence. I tried changing themes and icons from Tweak Tool, no difference. As far as I can see the icons are there in the hicolor directory
