Aug 4, 2011I upgraded to ubuntustudio last night while I was sleeping, and when I woke up this morning and restarted the laptop the sleek desktop environment was gone. I actually liked that layout. I can't find a way in the settings to re-enable it. en uninstalled the ubuntustudio suite and restarted the system. Nothing changed. Do I have to reinstall 11.04?I really love the new layout..as a side note, I had a small bug with it when I tried to enable the compiz effects. when I enabled the rotating cube and restarted the system the menus were gone and it was only a blank desktop

Aug 27, 2011I am Running opensuse 11.4 (64 bit) KDE desktop with all the updates & proprietary ATI driver installed. My processor is Athlon II X2 250 & motherboard is gigabyte MA785GPM-UD2H. I have 4 GB (2 +2) of DDR 2 RAM installed. I have turned off automatic updating & usually update my machine once a week. But just couple of days ago I had just updated my system and KDE desktop effects stopped working!!
I went to the Application launcher -> Configure Desktop -> Desktop Effects and everything was grayed out!! except for the following message Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:"
But, what technical Issue?? there was nothing else written! Googling for the issue has actually left me more confused; but I am still posting the content of my ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc file

Dec 3, 2008I'm in openSUSE right now, and I have the Compiz fusion settings manager. However, the Desktops Effects application is missing from System > Look and Feel. Is there anyway I can get it back, as I currently do not have any effects enabled?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded From 8.04LTS 10.04.1LTS , Now I Can't Boot.
Aug 28, 2010I just upgraded my server, and now I am stuck at "Kernel panic- not synching: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have read other suggestions about booting to previous kernels to reinstall latest kernel, but that doesn't work since I can't boot to any kernel. How can I fix this with the restore cd or from grub2 command line. Reinstalling is not an option as I have lots of configurations that I don't want to lose.

However on closer inspection Ubuntu has created two partitions , one sized at 289 GB and the other at 8.5GB the 8.5GB partition is the one with the os installed on it. It is sadly locked and i cant combine the two partitions :/.

May 7, 2010I attempted a distribution upgrade from 8.04LTS (32 bit) to 10.04LTS (32 bit). Once converted, I had no wireless or wired internet, along with numerous other bugs. After relentless hours of trying to resolve the problems, I converted back to 8.04LTS and installed the b43 drivers; I have wireless, however, still no wired connection. I've provided the outputs of the "sudo lshw -C network" terminal command below both before conversion to 10.04 and after reversion back to 8.04LTS. You'll notice that the NIC is not even listed after reversion (this is the same output that 10.04LTS gave me as well).
1.) Does anyone know if the terminal command will identify the NIC if the NIC Driver (assuming it's tg3) is not installed?
2.) Does 8.04LTS and 10.04LTS have a pre-installed NIC driver that is not compatible with the bcm5705?

May 30, 2010I've recently upgraded from 8.04LTS to 10.04LTS. About 90% of the time after boot-up, my mouse cursor seems to be corrupted; I can vaguely see the arrow (or part of it anyway) underneath some squiggly lines. The application KeePassX is affected too; there are some display corruption issues. Sometimes (maybe 1 boot in 10) the mouse cursor looks fine. I have a Radeon 9200 and have looked in the Forum for similar problems but they don't quite match up to mine.

Aug 25, 2010vote on the best automated deployment for 10.04 lts desktop! have 50units identical pc's, one pdc (openldap, bind, dhcp) and one fs (nfs server). thinking of installing just one pc with all the updates, program addons and stuff, then thinking of: disk image the disk and copy to the rest of the 49units and just edit the host name and activate the etho by sudo mv /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.old would this be ok? i mean there will be no problem if users authenticate an stuff?

If the cursor moves over the top bar area the menus drop dow, but every else is black-- power button, wireless icon,... all gone.

MOUSE-OVER RHYTHMBOX PLAYER ICON FUNCTIONALITIES
In previous releases, one of my favorites about RhythmBox was the fact that if you need to control things such as volume or check presently playing track, you can do so just by a mouse-over action and a scroll mouse over the Top-panel tray icon. It's all gone. Need to say the new click-on is good too but it's without the mouse scroll or Mouse-Over INFO
How can I re-enable it please? Why should I click on RhythmBox player each time just to control volume

Jul 3, 2010I am a linux noob and have been searching for a couple months to a fix for my problem but now I just need I have two hard drives. One with vista and the other with ubuntu, storage space, and some other partition. I was dual booting windows and ubuntu jaunty jackalope then one day I decided it would be fun to upgrade to 10.04 so I did. When I tried loading windows from grub it just showed a blinking cursor forever. And while attempting to fix the problem by adding windows to the grub menu.lst file it dissapeared from the grub options.

GRUB didnt notice windows xp though, so its not a boot option.

Jul 25, 2011I was running 8.04 and my internet (Comcast) comes via a Motorola SB5100 cable modem then into a Netgear router then into my Dell. When I upgraded to 10.04 yesterday, I lost the wired connection. The wireless connection still works fine, but I have not been able to get a wired connection. Also, most online solutions reference the Network Manager, which is nowhere to be found.
Anyone have any solutions? I would be willing to revert to 8.04 if needed, as that worked fine, and obviously I quite regret the upgrade!

Aug 5, 2011I upgraded to 2.6.35-30.56 last night and now my system's a little flaky. Everything seems to be running ever-so-slightly slower and fullscreen flash is now choppy. The weird thing is the Grub menu upon bootup only shows the latest kernel, but not the previous kernels. Doing an "ls" of the /boot folder only shows this newest kernel. I'd like to revert back to the previous kernel but don't know how.

I upgraded my Ubuntu installation today to 11.04 from the previous version (sorry can't remember its number / name) but I have a problem.
Because I had my Windows installation encrypted with Truecrypt I have to go through Truecrypts bootloader or I can't access Windows.
The upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu replaced Truecrypts bootloader with Ubuntu's (GRUB 2 I assume) and now I can't access Windows.
Is there a way to restore the old bootloader ?

May 11, 2010After upgrading from 9.10 karmic to 10.04 lucid, the windows of applications have no titlebars and I cannot move or resize them. Also if I have System, Preferences, Apprearance, Visual Effects, set to normal or extra the settings are lost after a logout/in or reboot. I have another user login and the Vishual Effects settings are remembered with it, but with my main more priviledged user, they are not. I sort of got around the problem by adding compiz to Startup Applications, but that only allows the Titlebars to show at at Normal or Extra settings in Appearance, Vishual Effects. It is reset to Normal or Extra when I select None before logging out/in. Should there be a part of compiz that starts even when none Vishual Effects is selected? (to show titlebars etc) Where is the configuration file that is meant to start compiz per user? I don't think Startup Applications settings properly deal with it.
