My mother runs Ubuntu 10.04 on her home computer, but on her workplace they use some version of Windows. Her IT-guy sent her a .rdp-file for logging in to her workplace server. This file doesn't work in Ubuntu, and the IT-department at her job can't solve the problem. Ergo; She's unable to log on to her workplace computer/server from home.
View 3 RepliesMy computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to configure an autologin account for a kiosk. I can create the user, no problem. I can set the user to automatically log in, no problem. I can set a delay in the automatic login so that someone is given a chance to log in using their own account, no problem. But if the autologin user logs out, then gdm does not automatically log it back in. This is where I'm stumbling. It seems that for such kiosk uses like this such behaviour would be a bug and not a feature.

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust before Lucid was released, I installed karmic on a vanilla VM in 64-bit mode, and all was good. Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?
View 7 Replies View RelatedGot myself in a bit of a squeeze here. I was messing around with the Xorg install on my Fedora 12 system. I ended up reinstalling it. Now my mouse and keyboard work fine in single user mode / terminal. But if I try and boot to X they dont work at the login screen. HAL and udev are booting. Ive done a udevadm monitor test in single user mode and its seeing the devices connect and disconnect. Ive also tried both USB and PS2 devices. Same issue. Ive tried playing with xorg.conf and generating it with Xorg -configure :1 I dont know to use to fix it. After banging my head against the wall for 20+ hours I decided it was time to ask for help. m just Lynxing around the web at the moment =X
View 2 Replies View RelatedI burned Fedora onto a disk, but when I turn on the system it just goes straight to the Windows XP login.
I thought it was something wrong with the disk or something like that, but when I pop in the disk on my Dad's laptop, the installation for Fedora runs perfectly.
Also, yes, I checked the order for booting and the CD drive comes before the hard drive.
I've tried to ssh in as the root user w/o a password (RSA keys) but I've had no luck as the root user. I've tried the exact same commands with Debian 5 and Centos 5.5, without a problem. Fedora 13 and 14 won't work! I can only log in w/o a password as a normal user, never as the root user! It always asks for the password if I try as root. I've even tried copying Debian's and Centos's sshd_config file and restarting sshd, but it still won't work.

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.

I can't type anything, but I can switch VC's with alt+arrow keys, Ctrl+S activates scroll lock, caps and numlock works too. View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using ubuntu for months now and it was really frustrating dealing with hardware issues. Just when I thought everything's going ok, today, when I boot up, I am greeted by the following error: "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly, you will need to configure these yourself."
Selecting "run in low graphics mode for one session" doesn't work. It looks like it's loading something but nothing. I tried various options like "reconfigure X" and none of them works. I can login the console find though. I have a backup from a month ago but I've changed a lot since then.

I am trying to install some packages in a ubuntu 8.10 server, however, apt-get doesn't work (I get several 'not found' errors). Is there any way to do that? I know this version is probably not supported anymore but I can't just format a customer server because it's OS is outdated...I just can't put my sources.list on it because I am on ubuntu 10.10 and it would download updates for the wrong OS probably causing a huge damage on the old one.

PS3 Media Server don't work It doesn't detect the PS3 correctly and on the PS3 side it just keeps saying "data corrupted" for every video I try to play. It used to work perfectly on 10.04.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIm trying to set up a samba PDC and login to it from Vista, and everything is fine except that the login script is not getting run at all. I dont want roaming profiles, I just want a script to map the samba users drive and a couple of other network shares. Pasting smb.conf at end of post. The logon script is in the netlogon directory and Im pretty sure all the permissions are ok. /home/samba/netlogon/logon.cmd This is a windows file.Vista logs in ok as the domain user, just no script!

I have noticed the Thunderbird icon is missing from my workplace switcher. It just shows a blank box in whatever workplace Thunderbird is. View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter I finished upgrading Xubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04, I discovered that my keyboard stopped working in X Server. The upgrade process was running smoothly until the last moment, when it produced some error, which I, unfortunately, did not write down. Anyway, the upgrade has completed; uname shows kernel version 2.6.32-31. Now the keyboard works fine if I select a recovery mode at startup, but if I type 'start gdm' from the shell or select the default option in GRUB while booting, the keyboard becomes unavailable right from the login screen. I can log on using the virtual keyboard, but that's all I can do; the keyboard is still dead.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a simple cron job that runs every night & I tested this manually by just running the command as root in bash and all worked fine. It took some time but the crob job finished and I got my results emailed to me perfect / as expected.

Now I noticed that I never ever got anything emailed to me the following day so I am wondering if perhaps the Cron daemon doesn't have permissions or has an issue running / executing the command rather than when I test the command as 'root'? When I view my logs, I can see the command being executed and don't see any errors however I don't get email results when Cron runs the job rather than me taking the command and running it manually in Bash...then it works. What am I missing?

My ftp server runs vsftp. The ftp passive ports stopped working while iptables is running, so users can't ls their dirs. I know that you need to load the modules of ip_conntrack and ip_conntrack_ftp, the problem is when I modprobe ip_conntrack I get the error: FATAL: Module ip_conntract_ftp not found. No that is not a typo. ip_conntract_ftp? Am I missing something?

In the Ambiance screenshot, the Workplace Switcher clearly shows that Google Voice is open in the 2nd workspace because it shows that icon there. In the Custom screenshot, the Workplace Switcher shows there's a window open in the second workspace, but no icon to identify what's in the window. I've checked all available controls, and only Ambiance and Radiance correctly show icons for most open windows in the Workplace Switcher. Does anyone know how to make controls from other themes work with Workplace Switcher the way that Ambiance and Radiance do?
