Server :: Cannot Type In VC -- Ssh Doesn't Ask For Login?

May 6, 2010

My small Arch Linux server with Apache and stuff (no X) got owned (DOS).Here's my problem:1) Apache went nuts with the memory and cpu usage -2) SSH shut down after a minute, so I went to the computer with an open root login and started typing...Nothing! I can't type anything, but I can switch VC's with alt+arrow keys, Ctrl+S activates scroll lock, caps and numlock works too. But when I try to type to bash or login, nothing happens. After this I tried SSH'ing my server again.. it doesn't timeoutt it hangs when it should ask for password.debug lines worth mentioning:debug1: Connecting to servername [x.x.x.x] port 22.debug1: Connection establishedSo.. do you guys know any possible rebootless solutions to this? Wouldn't like to reboot my 465d uptime server, reboot count after install at the moment: 0. I don't think it will even be able to boot.

Ubuntu :: Login To Workplace Server From 10.04 Doesn't Work

My mother runs Ubuntu 10.04 on her home computer, but on her workplace they use some version of Windows. Her IT-guy sent her a .rdp-file for logging in to her workplace server. This file doesn't work in Ubuntu, and the IT-department at her job can't solve the problem. Ergo; She's unable to log on to her workplace computer/server from home.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Type After Login And 1 Word Or So

May 31, 2010

I loose partial keyboard use after login. At first, I login, and can type about 1 word or so, then typing stops. I can use Ctl + Alt + Del to shutdown, restart or whatever. My volume and play stop, pause keys work when listening to music, but I have no pull downs. I can't use the Applications, Places, or System pull downs at all after the typing stops. However, I can still double-click things on the desktop, and I can also launch some launchers on the top system bar. I can browse the internet but no typing.

I once logged in, and did no typing for a couple hours. I just let it sit. Everything seemed normal until I started typing. Then it stopped typing, and no more pulldown menus. Another interesting fact is, I leave my computer on most of the time. I went away for 4 days and shut down my computer while I was gone. It was working fine when I shut it down, but then 4 days later when I boot back up, this crap starts. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Precision 670. The keyboard is wireless, but I have recently changed the batteries.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Type Password To Login?

Apr 29, 2010

Fresh install from the new CD (via BitTorrent). Installation seemed to go cleanly, with no errors or warnings, but a long delay while some files were downloading from the overloaded servers. However, after the reboot, the machine was unusable. Can't log in because it won't recognize any characters coming from the keyboard when I try to type my password. Hardware is a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad R52 with 1.5 GB RAM. Extremely vanilla machine. Possible wrinkle in that I'm trying another VM this time around, using VMware Player 3.0.1. Right now I'm assuming this installation is dead and non-recoverable.

Ubuntu :: Type Startx After Login To Get To GUI Desktop ?

Mar 8, 2011

Whenever I load up my computer, Ubuntu comes up with a command line asking for my user name and password. I can type all that in, and get into the system, but it's still in the command line. If I type startx, it will then load the GUI desktop just fine. Is there any particular reason it wont' boot straight into a GUI login screen?

I originally had Ubuntu dual booted with Windows 7, and was having this problem. When I installed Ubuntu fresh on an external hdd, the issue went away. However, I recently formatted the hdd and re-installed Ubuntu and now it's doing this again.

I newly installed Ububtu 8,04.3. I formatted my hard drive and erased Windows XP and tried to do the manual partitioning but don't have enough knowledge so picked the guided tour. Everything seemed to install but when I restarted it comes to "computer log-in" and wants a user name and password. I put in the user name I chose during installation and tried to put in the password but it wouldn'd type in - it also seemed to want a name for "computer." Does anyone know where I went wrong? I've been struggling to learn computer stuff on my own.

Fedora :: FC9: Forgot - Partition Doesn't Work - Can't Login At The LUKS Login After Grub Starts

Feb 15, 2010

My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives

Ubuntu :: Changing Session Type When Login In Without Password?

Sep 26, 2010

I am unable to change session type when not requiring passord on login.

How requiring password was changed:

System/Administration/Users and Groups
Clicked on my User
Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login"
Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login"
OK'd, everything

Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.

Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install 9.10 On PS3 - Keyboard Doesn't Type?

Jan 28, 2010

The title says it all. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my PS3, but the keyboard isn't typing. I can't complete the install, because I can't type anything. I've followed all the steps properly, everything goes smoothly, the mouse works just fine, and the capslock and numlock lights light up on the keyboard, and toggle when I press the corresponding buttons. The keyboard even works at the kboot prompt. After I choose the partition to use, I have to enter my information to continue. Without being able to type, I can't progress. The keyboard obviously works, since I can type just fine at the kboot prompt. This one's got me scratching my head. I'm going to try a 9.04 cd tomorrow, see if that works, but I was really hoping to get 9.10 on there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Xubuntu 10.04 - Login Screen Won't Let Type Password

May 2, 2010

I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop earlier, and all went well until I tried to finally login. A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.

Fedora :: Way To Auto-login Account / Don't Have To Type Password Everytim Switch On PC?

Feb 4, 2011

1. I am currently using a basic fedora 14. I had a fedora 8 DVD that contained many packages including its installation (I mean it was bootable and had its iso image. Now my question is that is there any way by which I can install the packages(like OpenOffice.org) from that DVD to fedora 14? I have a slow internet connection and its not possible for me to download large files.

2. I installed some packages via yum. My friend also has fedora 14 but unfortunately he doesnt have a internet connection to download the files via yum and install them. Are the .rpm files downloaded via yum stored in some specific folder, so that I can transfer those files via a flash drive to his computer and install them directly there?

3. Is there a way to autologin my account so that I dont have to type my password everytime I switch on my PC?

4. Everytime and every session I try to access a ntfs partition, it asks for my root password. Any tricks to bypass this?

OpenSUSE :: Getting Login Error When I Select Meego As Session Type / Sort It?

Jul 30, 2010

I installed goblin by run GoblinUI.ymp and logged out.
After I logged out, I chose meego as session type and tried to login again.
I entered correct password, but when I press enter after type password , display change to black and got some message and backed to login session again.

On the other hand, I succeed in running MeeGo Live CD(1.0.1 build 1.4).
I wrote MeeGo Live CD image on USB Flash Driver by using Win32 Disk Imager, and boot that one successfully, although it has some flaw.

Network Settings Window is stuck in workspace and can't move or close, so it cover other appication's window. Internet on toolbar is broken, so I have to run FireFox in application toolbar to use internet.

I'm using Netbook based on Atom CPU and GMA.OpenSUSE installed in my netbook is installed by KDE Live CD image.

Should I Use Gnome to use Goblin, because MeeGo is using Gnome? Or.... what is problem make Goblin doesn't work?

I tried many times, it just constantly brought me back to the login page.

Ubuntu :: Changing File System Type To Another Filesystem Type - Does It Effect On Data?

Feb 4, 2011

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5

previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal

After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data

By doing that

1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.

2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.

Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

I had very imp data in d:drive

Ubuntu Installation :: What Type Of Server Should Install?

Jan 29, 2011

I am going to be setting up my first ubuntu server this week, and I noticed in tutorials, that there are different options for what type of packages you want installed. I know a little bit, like what a DNS server is and such, but I am hoping somebody can shed some more light on the subject.I am pretty sure I won't need Postgresql or a print server, as the purpose of my server is to provide a low end platform that I can work on my php projects. I will be using PHP and mysql. I am also using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, 32-bit edition.
