Ubuntu :: Location Of GTK Window Manager Theme Config File?
May 1, 2010
I was messing around in the Window Manager Theme settings area and changed the theme to another one and I was immediatley logged off and now I cannot log back in. It seems like X is having a hard time displaying whatever theme I chose.I want to manually switch back to Albatross but I am unsure of where that setting is stored. Where is the configuration file for these themes stored?

I have some problems with Ubuntu 10.04. Sometimes system starts and there is no title bar on windows. Nothing helps, only logout and logina again. I've searched forums and found that it is possible to add line '/usr/bin/compiz' to starting applications, but this is not helping. I'm stuck. Other problem is that sometimes recently theme is changed. If I go to 'Appearance' then theme suddenly changes back.

where are the "System Log Viewer" config files stored? I know most have been moved into /var/rsyslog.d/ folder but where are the users config file stored? I restored my local /home to a fresh install and the Log viewer is looking for log files from the OLD install.
So there must be a config file somewhere in /home/$user that the system log viewer is reading from as well as the rsyslog.d folder...

For security reasons I need to ensure all of my users screensaver is set to come on after 10 minutes of inactivity. My thought was to find the screensaver config file, modify a setting in the file to 10 minutes and change ownership of the file to be root (so the user can't undo my changes either in the file or via the gui). However, I can't find the screensaver config file to do this. I'm running Centos 5.2. Anyone know where I can find the screensaver config file?

I have a nice little interface that generates an exim config file and a script on the server to check for changes. Unfort I cant find where to set the config file location.
E.G. I have my script generate the file to /etc/exim/exim4.conf (could be /usr/share/foo/bar.conf just as easily)
How can I point exim in the direction of that file?

I installed a theme in emerald, and it didn't do anything, like, it had no effect on my windows or anything. So i did some searching and the only thing i could find was to run "emerald --replace" in the terminal, and it worked, but if I exit out of the terminal, it reverts back to the old theme. How do I keep emerald's theme, even after I exit the terminal?

I backed up .themes from /home, but on trying to install them (files don't show as theme packages) it says "There was an error installing the selected file, index.theme doesn't appear to be a valid theme". Did I backup the right thing?

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

Does anyone know if it's possible to specify a screen location when opening a window in gnome? I have created a custom launcher on the top panel in gnome. It launches a bash script that I wrote, but the script requires input that can change. The launcher command is like this:
Code:
gnome-terminal -x bash -c "buildit"
The functionality of it works great. What I would like to do however, is control where the gnome-terminal window actually opens. It seems be random and based on other windows that are open. So sometimes it opens on the top-left of the screen, other times it's the bottom-left, etc.
I use Compiz as my window manager (e.g. under System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects I have chosen the "Normal") with an Nvidia 8600GT (driver version is 260.19.06).
Is there some way I can control the screen location (maybe specify the x,y coordinate) of where I want this window to open? Ideally it would be great to force the window to open directly below the icon in my panel. Is this even possible?

Where are the graphics stored for window controls? They change with the theme, so they must be part of the theme graphics. Specifically I'm looking for these: In Lucid's Ambiance theme, they're little plus and minus boxes. I prefer the rotating arrows and want to edit the theme to replace them.

I got a new computer recently, and just now installed 10.10. Everything was going great.... until when I enabled the Nvidia drivers and set my dual monitors. While things still work fine, it appears I have no theme set (Aside from the Window Border).
When I check in System->Preferences->Appearance it always shows the theme properly for this one window, while all other windows, and gnome panels etc appear to have no theme set (just use simple flat colours, low graphic mode etc).
Changing the theme (via the Appearance window) does not work, nor does a simple reboot.

I recently went through a desktop crisis after removing unity from 11.04, installing openbox, hating it, and then installing Gnome 3. What's weird is certain applications like chrome and some other system things appear to use the theme I have (as in, they look nice) but windows like terminal, file browser, and most other applications including the default log in screen all look like windows 95.
you can see the square unstyled buttons. I'm just wondering how to apply a full on system theme to apply to all windows in gnome 3. tweak-gnome didn't look like it could do it, and after running through the themes (redmond, clearlooks, etc) they didn't have any impact on these windows.

Only problem is when there's no information to read I can't learn anything. So I've looked and looked but I can't find anything on the KDM theme manage that comes with kubuntu 10.10.
SO here's what I want to do:
All I want to do is just change the login and splash screens to something more to my liking when I got to System settings -> System Administration -> Login Screen , which is the KDM that comes on kubuntu (trust me I looked for kdmtheme under KpackageKit I get a chance to pick new themes I go through and find something I like and go to install and it doesn't show. All I get is the original one and that's it.
why it doesn't show up or how I may go about changing these two things

What I want is a location, say at home where I might use the wired connection on my laptop or the wireless. Likewise at work, I am usually on a wired connection but sometimes need a wireless connection. Can/does Network Manager let me configure a location with preferred adapter, etc and automatically switch or do I need to install something like Wicd? I don't see anything in Network Manager to do this.

I have an application originally built for Unix Solaris that opens a Ghostview window to display maps on the desktop. When we recompiled the application for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, the Ghostview window opens and displays as requested, however I find the window cannot be successfully moved from the top left corner of the desktop. This has never been a problem on Unix, which allows the window to be moved to any location. In Linux, when I attempt to move the window to any other location on the desktop, it immediately pops back to the top left corner. I sometimes need to compare two different Ghostview maps, which is tough to do when they both insist on staying in the same location.

Since school ended, I decided to finally wipe and due a clean upgrade to Slackware 13.0. Everything is great except one thing. When I want to save something in firefox, the "save as" window that popups up, that allows you to browse to right directory, popups too low. In my window manager(wmii), the bottom is cutoff. I want to have the window popup higher. Is this possible? In my previous install, I think the window would usually remember where it last was, but now it seems to always popup in the same location. I'm not sure if this is slackware, firefox or wmii issue. Also I tried another wm, Awesomewm, and it showed up in the same spot.
