General :: Ghostview Window Stays In Fixed Location On Desktop?
Nov 2, 2010
I have an application originally built for Unix Solaris that opens a Ghostview window to display maps on the desktop. When we recompiled the application for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, the Ghostview window opens and displays as requested, however I find the window cannot be successfully moved from the top left corner of the desktop. This has never been a problem on Unix, which allows the window to be moved to any location. In Linux, when I attempt to move the window to any other location on the desktop, it immediately pops back to the top left corner. I sometimes need to compare two different Ghostview maps, which is tough to do when they both insist on staying in the same location.

I built a desktop a year or so ago, which runs like a dream. I have installed many OSes on it but the problem persists. If it tell the PC to restart it does everything right, shuts down but the PC remains on before it can restart. The OS shuts down and nothing is running, but the desktop stays on. If it helps, the PC shuts down fine. Just an annoying issue if I get updates in Windows/ Ubuntu etc.

So this morning I just upgraded my laptop from OpenSuSE 11.2 to 11.4. I am using the Gnome Desktop (2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux).
As of right now the "Taskbar" at the bottom of the desktop, does NOT stretch all the way across the bottom (meaning it would start on bottom-left edge and go to the bottom-right edge) of the screen. Right now it is sort of centered at the bottom, and its size changes depending on how many windows are open.
So is there any way to set it to a fixed width (by that I mean I want it to take up the entire bottom of the screen x-amount of pixels high, etc..

This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:
Code:
own_window_colour black
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_argb_130
own_window_type override
own_window yes
I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.

I mean I've used ghostview years ago on an AIX machine. But I could not find it on ubuntu (though I have found ghostscript in ubuntu) nor the information in which package the program is. I used "ghostview / gsview / gv --help", none of them is known. how the command should be?

Does anyone know if it's possible to specify a screen location when opening a window in gnome? I have created a custom launcher on the top panel in gnome. It launches a bash script that I wrote, but the script requires input that can change. The launcher command is like this:
Code:
gnome-terminal -x bash -c "buildit"
The functionality of it works great. What I would like to do however, is control where the gnome-terminal window actually opens. It seems be random and based on other windows that are open. So sometimes it opens on the top-left of the screen, other times it's the bottom-left, etc.
I use Compiz as my window manager (e.g. under System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects I have chosen the "Normal") with an Nvidia 8600GT (driver version is 260.19.06).
Is there some way I can control the screen location (maybe specify the x,y coordinate) of where I want this window to open? Ideally it would be great to force the window to open directly below the icon in my panel. Is this even possible?

I was messing around in the Window Manager Theme settings area and changed the theme to another one and I was immediatley logged off and now I cannot log back in. It seems like X is having a hard time displaying whatever theme I chose.I want to manually switch back to Albatross but I am unsure of where that setting is stored. Where is the configuration file for these themes stored?

Since school ended, I decided to finally wipe and due a clean upgrade to Slackware 13.0. Everything is great except one thing. When I want to save something in firefox, the "save as" window that popups up, that allows you to browse to right directory, popups too low. In my window manager(wmii), the bottom is cutoff. I want to have the window popup higher. Is this possible? In my previous install, I think the window would usually remember where it last was, but now it seems to always popup in the same location. I'm not sure if this is slackware, firefox or wmii issue. Also I tried another wm, Awesomewm, and it showed up in the same spot.

Let's say I have a program open on another virtual desktop. Is there a way I can bring that program to the current desktop through a script? The following command is the closest I can get:
wmctrl -a program This will switch to the desktop where the program is open and make it the foremost window. However, instead of going to the desktop where the program is, I want to bring the program to the current desktop. There is also this command:
wmctrl -R program The documentation says that this will do what I want, but it just does the same thing as the former command.

I'm curious, I believe that one of the ways that OSX make the GUI experience of *nix more 'snappy' was to ditch X and run the window manager more directly on the hardware.
If I'm looking to run Linux on a desktop, and have no interest in sending Windows to other machines on the network, can I run KDE or Gnome with no 'X' to eliminate that ever-so-slight lag with the window manager experience.
I guess basically what I'm asking is is there an equivalent of quartz for Linux?

I have a WinXP machine that is monopolizing a perfectly good monitor. I would like to use that monitor in my Debian Multiple Monitor setup. Is there a way that I can operate my WinXP machine's desktop remotely from a Gnome window on my Debian machine? In this window I would like to be able to see and use the desktop of the WinXP installation on the other hardware platform just as if I were on the WinXP machine itself. I use Synergy already to share the keyboard and mouse. Hearing about Remote Desktops suggests to me that this might be possible. If it is possible how is it done? What software / hardware is required to accomplish it? Are there any "secrets" that I need or should know of to make this work?

Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties:
Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first screen when 2nd screen is unplugged Keyboard shortcut friendly Not too hard to install Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics.

I don't know where to begin with this problem, because I'm not really sure what is causing it. What is happening is that every now and then my cpu load jumps up to 90-100% and just stays there. Programs that typically take a 1-5% of the cpu load start taking up around 40-50% of the total load. Everything bogs down to the point that only a restart fixes it. Does anyone have any idea on what might be happening? To give a little background, I recently switched from Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome to a dual boot with Windows XP and Slackware 13.1 with XFCE, Slackware being the main boot. What I'm experiencing now never happened with Ubuntu either. I will say that it does seem to happen when I stream media (movies and music) online, but it doesn't just start immediately. The increase occurs at irregular times, so I can't pinpoint one thing that causes. Moreover, I can't find a process that might be causing it

I have installed Unbuntu on recommendation from two users to get the USGS ISIS program to run on it when OTHER versions of Linux seems to have issuyes..not necessariliy LANY edition of Linux either ... imho after two full months of trying to get USGS and ASU to help give me honest geo-referenced and map-aligned data of all 10 bands each IR image has from Odyssey.. NasaView opens and gives individual bands..but...geo-referencing and map-alignment only ISIS can do.
I finally got it to work when two Ubuntu users got the main lib of ubuntu think certain old libraries are there when not. I think...worked anyhoo the ISIS commands worked...but now...the OUTPUT of the commands are INACCESSABILE! [URL] The above topic is where you'll read about the two month attempt and also see the Ubuntu rescue. But now the PLACE folders open for a VERY VERY short time about 2-3 seconds, if that, then shuts down again. From the Home terminal I got this list
[Code]....
As you may guess correctly everything between Music and Pictures in the listing is THE stuff produced by the output of the ISIS program made FOR Linux systems. Which One? Well Suse 10 and above not supported anymore and there are others. So I don't know what to do. I thought del meant delete in ANY language...guess not. What's up and how can I delete these files from the Home folder at least so it STAYS OPEN?
