CentOS 5 :: Location Of Screensaver Xml Config File?
May 21, 2009
For security reasons I need to ensure all of my users screensaver is set to come on after 10 minutes of inactivity. My thought was to find the screensaver config file, modify a setting in the file to 10 minutes and change ownership of the file to be root (so the user can't undo my changes either in the file or via the gui). However, I can't find the screensaver config file to do this. I'm running Centos 5.2. Anyone know where I can find the screensaver config file?

where are the "System Log Viewer" config files stored? I know most have been moved into /var/rsyslog.d/ folder but where are the users config file stored? I restored my local /home to a fresh install and the Log viewer is looking for log files from the OLD install.
So there must be a config file somewhere in /home/$user that the system log viewer is reading from as well as the rsyslog.d folder...

I was messing around in the Window Manager Theme settings area and changed the theme to another one and I was immediatley logged off and now I cannot log back in. It seems like X is having a hard time displaying whatever theme I chose.I want to manually switch back to Albatross but I am unsure of where that setting is stored. Where is the configuration file for these themes stored?

I have a nice little interface that generates an exim config file and a script on the server to check for changes. Unfort I cant find where to set the config file location.
E.G. I have my script generate the file to /etc/exim/exim4.conf (could be /usr/share/foo/bar.conf just as easily)
How can I point exim in the direction of that file?

I have the following problem. I downloaded openoffice 3 decompressed to the RPMs directory and by using command "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" installed all packages. When I look to the yumex so I can see single installed rpm's. That is OK. BUT I cant start openoffice because I dont know where are executable files. where is their location and where is default location for all installed programs(from RPM)?

I did a yum update this morning that included a dnsmasq update. Subsequently, for an unrelated reason, I restarted dnsmasq, but it failed because /etc/dnsmasq.d didn't exist. It looks like my /etc/dnsmasq.conf file now includes "conf-dir=/etc/dnsmasq.d" at the end. Since dnsmasq was starting and I didn't remove dnsmasq.d, I assume this line was added by the update. Commenting the line resolves the issue.
An alternative hypothesis, given that I don't really know what the state of /etc/dnsmasq.conf and /etc/dnsmasq.d/ was before the update, might be that the directory did exist, but was removed by the update. I find this the least likely of my 2 stated hypotheses. (There are other hypotheses, but I think they are even less likely). Am I correct is concluding the conf-dir line was added by the update? If so, shouldn't the updated RPM create the directory during install?

I've been racking my brains over the past few days trying to figure out why my NIC card (network interface card) won't show up in the ifcfg-eth0 file. When I configure a new server (like this one) I always go to:/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and from there I usally see the name of my NIC's manufacturer's name and the hardware MAC address. Then it's only a simple process of entering the server's IP address, netmask and gateway and I'm up and running in no time...But not in this case! the ifcfg-eth0 file is completely blank! There's not ONE single line of config info in it... (?)The server runs an Intel core 2 duo (dual-core) CPU with 1 gig of RAM.
I've even re-formatted the drive and re-installed Centos 5.1 on the darn thing 3 times and it simply won't work. The server cannot resolve when I do a wgetIt also gives me a 'resolution problem in the named configuration'.What I don't understand is that the 2 small LEDs on the Cat 5 cable lights up and flash at what appear to be regular intervals here.

We have been struggling with a problem with the mysql-server package. This might be in the wrong category because our problems are with it on x86_64. Where the problem happens variables that should populate from the my.cnf don't, on other servers, they do, the my.cnf files are identical except for the server-id
The problem occurs on some of our machines but not others. All are using the mysql-server-5.0.45-7.el5.x86_64 The ones that work, when you connect with a client respond with server version 5.0.45-log source distribution The ones that don't work respond with 5.0.45 source distribution
It's unclear what the differences are between the two source versions and how we wind up with two different versions. One thing that might be involved, the mysql package is installed with both the i386 and x86_64

I am getting a strange font problem (see attached screenshot) for a user logging in over VNC Server, I am also logged in over VNC however I am no experiancing any problems... This was the case on CentOS 5.3 and on 5.4. I have tried removing the .vnc dir in the users home dir and re running vncserver so that it recreates it, I found this in the logs:
1. (nautilus:14718): Pango-WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically
2.loaded modules were found. Pango will not work correctly.
3.This probably means there was an error in the creation of:
4.'/etc/pango/pango.modules'
5. You should create this file by running pango-querymodules.
6.Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

Does anyone know a way to activate a screensaver at the login screen? I've got about 5 machines here, and I'd really like the ability to just have the screensaver come on after 5 minutes of sitting there with nobody logged in...
Even a way to blank the screen would be nice. However, if we were to blank the screen, I need to ensure that it doesn't do a DPMS blanking, since we use calibrated monitors here, and turning them off sucks.

I am trying to get the KDE Media screen saver working in GNOME. Is there a way to use kde's screensaver program in gnome on startup, instead of gnome's screen saver program? Basically, I am trying to disable gnome's screensaver, and load kde's program in its place at gnome startup.

Screensaver mode was engaged in KDE via Control-Alt-L. Then after a while the screen when blank. I was able to get the login screen by moving my mouse; however, the keyboard was somehow disabled. It would not transmit any input. I hit cancel with the mouse and the keyboard could not bring up the login dialog box. This doesn't happen if the screensaver is engaged briefly - only for an extended period of time (perhaps 30 minutes)

I've tried to read many of the topics in this forum first and tried to find a solution to my problem, but can't find one.I'm testing CentOS 5.5, it's the first time I'm using a CentOS Linux release.I'm trying to configure the proxy "client side " on it and cannot find how to do it.On other Linux release I've used the ENV variable like "http_proxy" or "HTTP_PROXY" etc etc. This time, I don't know why but it doesn't work.I've put the name and @ip of the proxy in /etc/hosts and tried different version upper/lowercase of "http_proxy" "HTTP_proxy" "ftp_pr.." but it doesn't work.If I configure manually Firefox and puting the name or @ip of the proxy we have on our network, it works. But if I try to use ENV variable it doesn't work...

I was wondering how to create a GNOME screensaver from a video file? I don't really care what video format the screensaver creator supports because I can always transcode the video with ffmpeg or mencoder. I also, don't care if the creator uses proprietary formats such as mpeg, mpeg4, avi, etc. I do however want the program to create an installable screensaver.

I've got a fresh install of RHEL5 with updates installed running on a PC104. If the machine starts up the screensaver, I can't ever get out of it. The mouse pointer comes back up on the screen, but the desktop doesn't appear or a box to enter a password. I try to reboot X and get an error that X can't be started and it drops me to a prompt. I reboot from the command line and then I get the filesystem error and have to wait 2 hours while it scans.

I ran gconf-editor and I can see the file but no option to not display in Nautilus. Is there an easy way to not display the file on the Gnome desktop without messing up the KDE config file?

We have moved from a Windows based SMTP server to Sendmail on Cent 5.5. We have a special application that was written to look at the "BadMail" folder on the Windows box. I am told by my developers that it is capable of monitor remote locations and they just need to know the format or extension of the badmail files.
My question is what is the default location of the badmail folder in Sendmail? This is a default install from CentOS.
