Ubuntu :: Display Going To Sleep?

May 14, 2010

How can I stop my display going to sleep?

I've got the Power Management settings for mains power as:

Actions - put computer to sleep when inactive - never

Display - put display to sleep when inactive - never

Screensaver settings are:

Regard computer as idle set to 2 hours

Unticked Activate screensaver when computer is idle

Yet the screen still goes blank after a few minutes when I'm not using it.

I dual boot and it doesn't do it in Windows. It didn't do it in 8.10 or 7.10 either.

Ubuntu :: Can't Wake From The Sleep

Ubuntu :: Switch Off The Sleep Key

Jul 20, 2010

I have Kubuntu 10.4 cleanly transformed to Gnome (aptitude task kubuntu-desktop was removed and ubuntu-desktop installed). I want to switch off the sleep key, because I sometimes press it accidentally and the computer goes to sleep. Fortunately the sleep is correct, no applications crash, but still some network connections goes away and it is annoying and time wasting. I tried to switch it off with the power management tool, but there are only two options: sleep to memory and sleep to disk. I am sure, there was "do nothing" option in some other versions, but it isn't there.

How can I fix it? Is it possible to hack it with some "edit gnome variables directly" tool? I am experienced linux user, but not a gnome or X expert, and I don't like to solve simple problems (and I think this is a simple problem) with complicated scripting and strange hacks.

Ubuntu :: Sleeps Again After Returning From Sleep

Feb 2, 2010

I configured Dell Latitude D620 to go to sleep mode (suspend to ram) when i close the lid. It suspends ok and then I open the lid. It wakes up ok, but few seconds after goes to sleep again! So I need to press the power button to force it to wake up.

Sleep button works just fine. /etc/acpi/sleep.sh from console too.

/etc/acpi/events/lidbtn

Code:
event=button[ /]lid
action=/etc/acpi/sleep.sh
update:

I noticed that it always goes to sleep again when I wake up laptop by opening the lid. For example if I run /etc/acpi/sleep.sh, pm-suspend or press the sleep button laptop goes to sleep, then i close the lid and when i open it back - the problem occurs.

Ubuntu :: Wake From Sleep And/or Hibernation?

I'm running 9.10, how do I wake up from sleep or hibernation on my Dell XPS notebook? I have no problem putting the comp to sleep/hiber but can't seem to work out the keys to wake it up again.

I don't get any responses from the keys even when I try CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK, so all I can do is reach for the on/off switch.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Goes Into Sleep - Won't Wake Up

Apr 27, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and everynow and then I get this annoying problem. If I walk away for a bit, just upstairs to use the bathroom, sometimes when I come back the monitor is off and the power light is blinking. You know, like what monitors usually do when they are still powered on but the screensaver is done playing. However, this happens to me well before the 10 minutes that the screensaver is supposed to end.

It does not always happen, and I can't really isolate what may be causing it, as I never take a note of what I'm doing when I go pee. HOwever, I rarely do anything other that run VLC, Chrome, Firefox, or OpenOffice Writer.

The problem is that the screen won't wake up. Moving the mouse does nothing. Jamming some keys does nothing. Trying to go to text terminal does nothing. I have to either REISUB or hold down the power button on the tower.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Goes To Sleep During Installation?

After using the Wubi installer and rebooting my computer, i select the ubuntu boot menu option and it says it is preparing to continue with the installation. after a countdown before it begins, my monitor goes to sleep. i used an eMachine monitor that i used in a previous installation of 9.10 that worked fine and reached the exact same problem. When booting from a live CD and selecting try without installing the screen comes up with a blinking underscore, and both monitors went to sleep. I believe its a problem with the graphics chip, but i dont know how to fix it.

Ubuntu :: Computer Don't Work - Never Go To Sleep

Aug 4, 2010

The question is instead of shotgunning the problem should I start with replacing the hard drive or the motherboard or the processor. Is there a way to tell what is blown? The house took a direct hit and most electronics were fried. The main problem is that I set the computer to never go to sleep and it does every few minutes and I have to log back on quite often. Several games no longer play or just quit in the middle of the game and sends me back to the desktop. I haven't tried to do everything yet so I don't know of other problems. I don't have a lot of extra money so I only want to replace what I have to. The computer is a Dell Inspiron with 2.5 Gb processor and an Nvidia card ordered from Dell with Ubuntu 10.4 installed.

Ubuntu :: Stop The Display From Going To Sleep?

Aug 11, 2010

I just recently changed one of my OSs to Ubuntu 10.04. I have run into a somewhat annoying problem. The problem: My monitor is going to sleep after 10 min. of inactivity no matter how I have the system set. I do not wish for this to occur, I mean why bother having a screensaver? lol I am using a desktop PC. The Power Management daemon is enabled. I have power management set to - Put computer to sleep when inactive for: Never Put display to sleep when inactive for: Never When power button is pressed: Shutdown When suspend button is pressed: Suspend

I have screensaver set to- Activate screensaver when computer is idle: unchecked Lock screen when screensaver is active: unchecked The duration slider is maxed out to 2 hours. The sleep function of my monitor is turned off. It's a Compaq WF 1907. I know it's Ubuntu because my monitor OSD is showing a "No Signal" message when it happens and it never happens when I am using Linux Mint 9. Since LM9 is built on top of Ubuntu, this leads me to believe a setting is simply not taking. Ubuntu is fully updated. I have a wonderful desktop set up and I would really hate to scrap it and go back to LM on this partition but this is really irritating. Is there some way to make it work the way it's supposed to?

Ubuntu :: Monitor Goes To Sleep And Won't Wake Up?

Aug 30, 2010

I just recently got my old box back and now I'm running 10.4. I've had some minor issues that I have got through but now there is one which seems to really be frustrating me. At any random time my monitor may go black as if it is in sleep mode. The problem is when it does this, no mouse movement or keystroke will wake the thing up. So I am forced to press the power button. When I press the power button the Ubuntu logo pops up on the screen as if it magically woke up but it is too late because now the computer is shutting down... When I go to System>Preferences>Screensaver I get to the options for the screensaver and I have about 2 seconds before that triggers the screen going black.

I can't even start until I know that my screen won't shut off at any random moment!

Ubuntu :: Mount USB-HDD On Wakeup From Sleep (10.04)

Aug 31, 2010

because of a bug that changes the device of an USB-HDD from /dev/sdb to /dev/sdc after wakeup I need to re-mount my external usb-hdd on wakeup. As far I found out this could be done with an script in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d I placed a script there and made it executalbe, the contents are:

Code:

#!/bin/sh
sudo mount -a
echo "working" /home/max/Desktop/test.txt
exit 0

If I execute the script from shell the HDD gets mounted, when waking from sleep/standby the script writes "working" in the specified file but the hdd won't get mounted. As I plan using the HDD as a NAS it's important it gets mounted again because otherwise the samashares are invalid

I couln't find any hints in the syslog or the PM logs what is causing the system to go to sleep.

Ubuntu :: Hdparm Not Putting HDD's To Sleep?

Dec 12, 2010

Im wanting to put HDD's to sleep using hdparm after 20min of activity (a 4x disk raid5 array and two single disks). I have edited /etc/hdparm.conf, adding the following lines at the end of the file:

Code:

#6TB RAID5 POWER DOWN
/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST32000542AS_5XW0T1R6 {
spindown_time = 240

[code]....

Code:

sudo hdparm -y /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_SAMSUNG_HD501LJS0MUJDWQ411622

The HDD's will sleep with out issue. Ive looked around my log files and cant seem to find anything to do with hdparm, or the HDD's sleeping. Have I make a mistake in the .conf file? Is there some place hdparm logs, or if I can activate some sort of verbose mode? Or does hdparm need to be activated on boot?

EDIT: I'm using ubuntu 10.04.1 x64 last updated today.

No connectionI've run ifconfig, and the connection is there but no address. Has this bug not been solved?
