Ubuntu :: Computer Don't Work - Never Go To Sleep
Aug 4, 2010
The question is instead of shotgunning the problem should I start with replacing the hard drive or the motherboard or the processor. Is there a way to tell what is blown? The house took a direct hit and most electronics were fried. The main problem is that I set the computer to never go to sleep and it does every few minutes and I have to log back on quite often. Several games no longer play or just quit in the middle of the game and sends me back to the desktop. I haven't tried to do everything yet so I don't know of other problems. I don't have a lot of extra money so I only want to replace what I have to. The computer is a Dell Inspiron with 2.5 Gb processor and an Nvidia card ordered from Dell with Ubuntu 10.4 installed.

When ever my computer goes to sleep it becomes unresponsive. No mouse or keyboard click wakes it up. The only thing I can do is press the power button which makes it completely reboot. This is killing my productivity. Anyone have any tips on how to make this function correctly?

I applied Power Management settings to put my computer to sleep in the hope that it would only sleep when it wasn't downloading something in Deluge. Unfortunately it would seem that it puts the computer to sleep despite Deluge being active. No biggie I thought, I'll just disable the sleep settings my setting them both back to NEVER. However, it ignores my new settings and still puts the display / computer to sleep, at the exact times I set originally!

I have an interesting issue. I have a computer running Ubuntu 10.10. I have a wireless USB Microsoft keyboard attached to this, and I have a cheap USB infrared remote also attached to it.The wireless USB Microsoft keyboard can wake up the system from suspend. The USB infrared remote cannot. To start off, I made sure my /proc/acpi/wakeup had wakeup enabled for all usb devices.
Code:
xbmc:~$ cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
Device S-state Status Sysfs node

Is there any way to find out which device/event caused Ubuntu (10.10) to wake up from the most recent sleep/hibernation? I am trying to troubleshoot some sleep issues on a new box, and knowing what's causing it to wake up would help. I did check /var/log/pm-suspend.log but all it seems to say is Sat Dec 11 22:18:27 GMT 2010: Awake.

I've been watching movies alot at night and the thing that is urksome is that when I wake up the computer is still running even though the movie quit playing like 5 hours ago while I was asleepI have dbus plugin for totem installed, and totem isn't set to be ontop always. Also in powermanagement I have it set up so that the screensaver kicks on at 3 minutes after movie, screen shutsdown after 5 minutesand the computer should be put to sleep after 30 minutes. I'd like to have my Linux box (a QNAP TS-210 NAS) send the order to go to sleep (or hibernation) to my main Windows 7 computer. As the NAS is running Linux, I can't use psshutdown from SysInternals' PsTools. Is there any Linux equivalent? Or some "magic packet" that can order the Win7 computer to sleep.I know I could install a SSH daemon and trigger a shutdown command from the Linux box using ssh, but ideally I do not want to install anything on the Win7 computer. I can install Linux software on the NAS, no problem about this. PHP, python and perl are also available on it.

after totem is done playing a movie from my external harddrive ( usb 2.0 750 gb Western Digital HDD) the computer screen will go blank but the computer will not suspend or hibernate. I have gnome-power-manager to go to suspend after 30 min of inactivity. I will usually fall asleep during the movie and the laptop will remain on. I will wake up to find the laptop on for the whole night and that it didn't go to sleep or suspend power after the movie stopped. Note ** I have already tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager & totem ... Also have turned on and off Dbus plugin, and totem is not set to always on top.

Gnome would sleep after specified 10 min and put this machine into <1 Wt saving mode.KDE just invokes screensaver and turns off display. It won't even spin down HDDs.There are no profiles in KDE power settings and I can't create any - create button works, but 'new profile' dialogue does not actually create any profiles. This is a brand new default install of F14 on AMD 890 chipset.

We have two Sangoma U100 products connected to our Acer Aspire Revo 360 (runs on Atom board). The Sangoma USB units provide connectivity to PSTN. Occassionaly and probably in a pattern they have failed every monday for the past month or so.
This is the OS version of CentOS I am running: Linux pbx.local 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5 #1 SMP Thu Jul 1 19:07:06 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux I am wondering if this is a driver issue, ACPI sending computer or ports to sleep, or if it's something else? Any pointers would be appreciated. Following is some portions of dmesg output:
sdlausb: Attaching sdlausb on 2 (BusId 2-1)
sdla-2-1: USB device is connected!

"Sleep" is not supposed to permanently kill off the network service. restarting the NetworkManager / network services DOES NOT WORK. Why this blatent and crippling bug is allowed tp persist? I dont want to "rasberry reboot" like windows, this has been the only forced reboot

I just bought a Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse. It's no problem to let it work under Koala 9.10 (gnome), but after shutdown/standby/sleep, it doesn't work anymore. With my USB mouse, I have to click the bluetooth icon and select 'switch off bluetooth'. After that, I click 'switch on bluetooth' and bluetooth works again. I thought switching on and off bluetooth with the applet is the same as 'sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start/stop', but it isn't! The previous command greyes out/in the bluetooth icon, but it doesn't resume my bluetooth. If 'sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart' would work, I would be able to add this line into /etc/pm/sleep.d, so it's automatically loaded on resume.

My laptop sleeps or hibernates fine, but on awake I just get a blank screen and the hard drive doesn't spin at all. This also disables the network manager, which is a real pain. Also for some reason I can't enable special effects. I have the ATI Radeon 200M series integrated graphics chipset.eres some spec details:

I just recently updated to kernel 2.6.35.10-83, and after the usual hassle of updating my ATI driver, it worked perfectly. Or so I thought ..
When i pushed the sleep button on my laptop to suspend the system, it turned out that it doesn't do so very well any more - it sounds like it turns off the harddrive, and then the screen just goes blank except for a blinking, but unresponsive cursor. Also, pressing numlock/capslock doesn't switch those little lights on/off.
The only thing I can then do is to hold the power button for a while to shut down.
Is anyone else experiencing this, or does anyone have a solution?

I have Banshee's alarm plugin installed. From Banshee's menu, I click on Tools → Alarm Clock → Sleep Timer. The timer looks like it should be set according to 24-hour time, so I set it for 2 minutes past the current time and click "Okay". The timer doesn't turn off the music when the designated time comes and goes. Thinking that maybe it's a countdown timer, I just set the thing to 2 minutes, but 2 minutes later the music keeps playing on and on. I go Tools → Alarm Clock → Alarm and put a check mark in "Enable Alarm" and try the sleep timer again, but still it doesn't work. I'm running 10.04 64-bit.

I've tried ubuntu, kubuntu, fedora and linux mint. all 64 bit versions. I've also tried to suspend through applications like acpitool. But nothing works. When I click on Suspend, the screen goes blank but the computer is still running. The wireless network adaptor gets disabled for a second and then comes back on. All I have to do is press a key and I get the unlock screen prompt. Basically, suspend works like 'Lock Screen'. I have a HP Pavillion laptop. Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM.

I work in a retail store at which there is a computer set up in the corner for customers to browse the stores website on. The problem is that that is all it will let me do. I get board, and want to do other stuff. Once windows starts, it skips the logon on screen and once loaded the only thing that can be done on the computer is browse the stores website.
However, if I unplug the computer I can while its starting up get into BIOS. So here im wondering two things. 1) If I put in the USB, boot from it, and load ubuntu (even though I will only be able to use the default programs as theres no way I would want to install it on the work computer), will I get fired? In other words, is there a way if there monitoring the computers to know what im doing or because its a different OS will I be fine. 2) Alternatively, in BIOS there is an option to disable network administration.
For this my question is the same, if I disable it, do fun stuff on the computer all day, the re-enable it before I leave is there a high change of the network administration catching on to this or no.

Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't seem to work on my computer. When I install it (tried both CD, DVD and USB-stick) all I see is "Ubuntu" with a number of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black.I also tried the alternative ISO (with non-graphical interface), and that installation worked; I could partition the HD, enter username and password and it copied all files to the HD. But when it said it was finnished, and I rebooted the computer (without the installation media) "Ubuntu" shows on screen with a nuber of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black. The computer is new, has an i5-750 CPU, 4GB RAM and a XFX Radeon 5670 1GB graphics adapter and two identical HD:s, one with a working Windows 7 installation (disconnected when I try installing Ubuntu).

EDIT: I got it to work. It turns out that mesa-common-dev works with my nVidia drivers.
I'm new here, and to Linux/Ubuntu in general, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section or something. Anyways, I'm trying to get the OpenGL SDK to work on my computer. I've already gotten gcc/++ and whatnot, and I'm fairly sure I've upgraded my graphics drivers to the most current possible. A quick check reveals that my graphics card is nVidia:
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV41.8[GeForce Go 6800] (rev a2)So I assume that I need to get the nVidia OpenGL packages:
Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-dev
However, that nets me this error:
Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package nvidia-glx-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package 'nvidia-glx-dev' has no installation candidate
My only other thought is to apt-get mesa-common-dev, but I don't know if that will work with nVidia. (And this is a rather old computer, so the problem might just be one of obsoleteness, but it doesn't seem like so, from the error I'm getting).

I have been able to start 720p videos but with considerable AV drift. When i forward the video the drift temporarily disappears and video starts drifting again. The problem is that the video is always slower than the audio. Framedropping removes the A-V lag but makes the video unwatchable.

Ok Ive tried soooo many tutorials and been through sooo many forums but I cant get my file sharing to work from any computer. Ive got a - Ubuntu 10.04(64bit) desktop to use as a home web/file server, wired.(BEN-SERVER)- Vista(32bit) laptop, wireless.(BEN-LAPTOP)- Windows 7(64bit) desktop, wireless.(BEN-LAVIE)- EchoLife HG520s ADSL2 wireless modem.
At the moment...In Ubuntu network browswer it only displays BEN-LAPTOP.But trying to browse BEN-LAPTOP I get "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server".Vista only displays BEN-LAVIE and browsing gives me "Windows cannot access \BEN-LAVIE"And Windows 7 doesn't display any.Previously I was able to share between Windows 7 and Ubuntu but I don't know what I did but it stopped working. I have since reinstalled Ubuntu and tried again from scratch but no luck

I would like to use ssh / scp between one computer at home and another at work. I can do it from home to work, but not the opposite. I think my home IP address starts with 82., is that ok? The one at work starts with 130. Here some terminal commands i launched (I cannot fully understand them). I also used a site of the internet provider, first to add rules (eg allow this and that IP address), then to disabled the firewall. The /etc/ssh/sshd_config of the two computers are the same.
Code:
sudo apt-get install ssh openssh-server
sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -d 0/0 -s 0/0 --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
