Ubuntu :: Mount USB-HDD On Wakeup From Sleep (10.04)
Aug 31, 2010
because of a bug that changes the device of an USB-HDD from /dev/sdb to /dev/sdc after wakeup I need to re-mount my external usb-hdd on wakeup. As far I found out this could be done with an script in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d I placed a script there and made it executalbe, the contents are:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
sudo mount -a
echo "working" /home/max/Desktop/test.txt
exit 0
If I execute the script from shell the HDD gets mounted, when waking from sleep/standby the script writes "working" in the specified file but the hdd won't get mounted. As I plan using the HDD as a NAS it's important it gets mounted again because otherwise the samashares are invalid

I am trying to figure out what is causing my system to go to sleep as soon as I wake it up.
- Every time I put my notebook to sleep by pressing (Fn+F1)...
- When I wake it up by hitting the power button or opening the lid,
- The system starts wakening, but then it just sleeps again.
- By this time I just hit the power button or open the lid again, and is ok then.
I been trying to read about ACPI & HAL, but I haven't notice anything suspicious.
I have a Dell M1330 with Nvidia (manufacturer drivers) running FC11.

I'm experiencing low importance nuisance with conky. I'm running ubuntu 10.10 and use conky to have basic system overview. Whenever I mount/umount USB flash, conky disapears from display. It does not crash, it only falls into neverending sleep (process state: Sl+). When I send rehub signal (kill 1 {conky_pid}) conky happily wake up, reloads configuration and shows me what I want to see. I dont have anything USB realted in my monitor.

When I suspend the computer it is more or less idle. When waking up, the harddrive is maxed out with i/o activity. The drive led is more or less fully on. I am not able to log in to gnome. I can however switch to VT1 and log in there, although it takes ages.
top shows no process activity, but IO Wait is at about 87%. df -h reports several GB free. free -m shows there is over 2GB free RAM.
I installed iotop, which took about two hours. I have attached it's output as it's rather special. In short just about every app is reading as much as it can from disk, including iotop itself!
As seen in the log throughput is not very high, but the disk i/o still puts the system to a crawl.
I killed process after process until it suddenly stopped. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to when, but the i/o hammering stopped when killing one of the following (incomplete process names):
PC specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64
Acer aspire 5740, 4GB RAM, Intel Core i530 dualcore. AMD mobility radeon 5650 1GB.
I use fglrx and compiz is enabled with 'normal' profile.

I have quite a few things running, and walk away from the laptop. When I return and wake up the computer, I have a period of between 10-15 seconds before a password prompt is shown. I would expect the password prompt to come up before I am able to type and do any system commands.

I'm experiencing a strange behavior with wakeup after suspend/hibernate: the first time the system wakes up, it works ok. Then it can suspend ok, but on each wake up I get the login window (my session has been forced logged out). I have to reboot to get one good wake up. It's 100% reproductible on both suspend-to-disk and suspend-to-ram.
/var/log/pm-suspend.log doesn't give much info:
Mon Jul 12 16:20:24 CEST 2010: performing suspend
Mon Jul 12 17:45:16 CEST 2010: Awake.

I'm trying to lower consumption of my server/HTPC. After wakeup from pm-suspend server/HTPC is ready to use in 1 or 2 seconds .For example if I suspend it while watching movie in KODI, after resume movie starts playing instantly. But some services (SSH and SAMBA) are not running. I thought it was network problem so I change configuration to static (not DHCP). SAMBA and SSH starts like 15 seconds after wakeup.

How can I stop my display going to sleep?
I've got the Power Management settings for mains power as:
Actions - put computer to sleep when inactive - never
Display - put display to sleep when inactive - never
Screensaver settings are:
Regard computer as idle set to 2 hours
Unticked Activate screensaver when computer is idle
Yet the screen still goes blank after a few minutes when I'm not using it.
I dual boot and it doesn't do it in Windows. It didn't do it in 8.10 or 7.10 either.

Whenever I close my laptop lid or just press the suspend button, it will go to sleep just fine. Perfect. Waking up is the problem. The drive light flashes for a few seconds, and then it just goes to back to normal but my display is still busted.

I have Kubuntu 10.4 cleanly transformed to Gnome (aptitude task kubuntu-desktop was removed and ubuntu-desktop installed). I want to switch off the sleep key, because I sometimes press it accidentally and the computer goes to sleep. Fortunately the sleep is correct, no applications crash, but still some network connections goes away and it is annoying and time wasting. I tried to switch it off with the power management tool, but there are only two options: sleep to memory and sleep to disk. I am sure, there was "do nothing" option in some other versions, but it isn't there.
How can I fix it? Is it possible to hack it with some "edit gnome variables directly" tool? I am experienced linux user, but not a gnome or X expert, and I don't like to solve simple problems (and I think this is a simple problem) with complicated scripting and strange hacks.

2. Make the monitor go to sleep mode.

Asus u43f wont go into sleep/suspend mode. Either manually from the shut down menu or by closing the lid. the screen will turn off but the various lights do not turn of and hard drive continue to spin.
I found this suggested test with a google search but no fix
sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh
which returned:

how to tell to the linux system, that when it will switch to the sleep mode, system launch a specific code (in python).
So two solution possible?
1) set a specific config file witch inform system to launch a python.py code. ?
2) config my own screensaver witch execute app when system call it. ?
In the two case, I don't find informations on the web.

I configured Dell Latitude D620 to go to sleep mode (suspend to ram) when i close the lid. It suspends ok and then I open the lid. It wakes up ok, but few seconds after goes to sleep again! So I need to press the power button to force it to wake up.
Sleep button works just fine. /etc/acpi/sleep.sh from console too.
/etc/acpi/events/lidbtn
Code:
event=button[ /]lid
action=/etc/acpi/sleep.sh
update:
I noticed that it always goes to sleep again when I wake up laptop by opening the lid. For example if I run /etc/acpi/sleep.sh, pm-suspend or press the sleep button laptop goes to sleep, then i close the lid and when i open it back - the problem occurs.

I'm running 9.10, how do I wake up from sleep or hibernation on my Dell XPS notebook? I have no problem putting the comp to sleep/hiber but can't seem to work out the keys to wake it up again.
I don't get any responses from the keys even when I try CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK, so all I can do is reach for the on/off switch.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and everynow and then I get this annoying problem. If I walk away for a bit, just upstairs to use the bathroom, sometimes when I come back the monitor is off and the power light is blinking. You know, like what monitors usually do when they are still powered on but the screensaver is done playing. However, this happens to me well before the 10 minutes that the screensaver is supposed to end.
It does not always happen, and I can't really isolate what may be causing it, as I never take a note of what I'm doing when I go pee. HOwever, I rarely do anything other that run VLC, Chrome, Firefox, or OpenOffice Writer.
The problem is that the screen won't wake up. Moving the mouse does nothing. Jamming some keys does nothing. Trying to go to text terminal does nothing. I have to either REISUB or hold down the power button on the tower.
