When ever my computer goes to sleep it becomes unresponsive. No mouse or keyboard click wakes it up. The only thing I can do is press the power button which makes it completely reboot. This is killing my productivity. Anyone have any tips on how to make this function correctly?
View 9 RepliesThe question is instead of shotgunning the problem should I start with replacing the hard drive or the motherboard or the processor. Is there a way to tell what is blown? The house took a direct hit and most electronics were fried. The main problem is that I set the computer to never go to sleep and it does every few minutes and I have to log back on quite often. Several games no longer play or just quit in the middle of the game and sends me back to the desktop. I haven't tried to do everything yet so I don't know of other problems. I don't have a lot of extra money so I only want to replace what I have to. The computer is a Dell Inspiron with 2.5 Gb processor and an Nvidia card ordered from Dell with Ubuntu 10.4 installed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI applied Power Management settings to put my computer to sleep in the hope that it would only sleep when it wasn't downloading something in Deluge. Unfortunately it would seem that it puts the computer to sleep despite Deluge being active. No biggie I thought, I'll just disable the sleep settings my setting them both back to NEVER. However, it ignores my new settings and still puts the display / computer to sleep, at the exact times I set originally!

I have a wireless USB Microsoft keyboard attached to this, and I have a cheap USB infrared remote also attached to it.The wireless USB Microsoft keyboard can wake up the system from suspend. The USB infrared remote cannot.To start off, I made sure my /proc/acpi/wakeup had wakeup enabled for all usb devices.

When I closed my laptop lid its going black screen and my hdd led is lighting I think my hdd is working hard and I think my cpu is working hard too so fan is working fast and my notebok is going hot.Any key is working on black screen. Also in powermanagement I have it set up so that the screensaver kicks on at 3 minutes after movie, screen shutsdown after 5 minutesand the computer should be put to sleep after 30 minutes. Is there any Linux equivalent? Or some "magic packet" that can order the Win7 computer to sleep.I know I could install a SSH daemon and trigger a shutdown command from the Linux box using ssh, but ideally I do not want to install anything on the Win7 computer. I can install Linux software on the NAS, no problem about this. PHP, python and perl are also available on it.
View 3 Replies View Relatedafter totem is done playing a movie from my external harddrive ( usb 2.0 750 gb Western Digital HDD) the computer screen will go blank but the computer will not suspend or hibernate. I have gnome-power-manager to go to suspend after 30 min of inactivity. I will usually fall asleep during the movie and the laptop will remain on. I will wake up to find the laptop on for the whole night and that it didn't go to sleep or suspend power after the movie stopped. Note ** I have already tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager & totem ... Also have turned on and off Dbus plugin, and totem is not set to always on top.

"Sleep" is not supposed to permanently kill off the network service. restarting the NetworkManager / network services DOES NOT WORK. Why this blatent and crippling bug is allowed tp persist? I dont want to "rasberry reboot" like windows, this has been the only forced reboot
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.
Here's the situation:
I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
so here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

i have 2 computers.both have pidgin messenger with the same accounts (yahoo, msn, aim, facebook...). both can connect at the same time. both connect at startup.both work well.some of the chat protocols disconnect upon sensing multiple connections (as in, when one account signs in from two places).good.others don't.bad.
is there a way to remotely disconnect the OTHER computer's pidgin while using the current computer? while both instances of pidgin are running, the OTHER computer will see all incoming messages on pidgin. anyone at that computer will see a one-sided conversation.simple solution would be to stop them from connecting at startup. that still doesn't solves the problem of "what if i forgot to turn one off" or "what if someone runs pidgin on the other computer."
My wifes networked computer connected to the network just fine when it was Win XP. Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared. So, one computer connects great, the other does not.**I dont know what to do at this point.Here is the layout:My Comp (10.04) ---------......Main Network Comp (XP)Wife Comp (10.04) -------/The main network computer is XP as it has software on it we need that does not work in Wine. The main computer will have to stay XP. I cannot get my wifes computer to connect to the main system, although mine connects just fine. I dont know what the problem is. Unticked Activate screensaver when computer is idle
Yet the screen still goes blank after a few minutes when I'm not using it.
I dual boot and it doesn't do it in Windows. It didn't do it in 8.10 or 7.10 either.
Whenever I close my laptop lid or just press the suspend button, it will go to sleep just fine. Perfect. Waking up is the problem. The drive light flashes for a few seconds, and then it just goes to back to normal but my display is still busted.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Kubuntu 10.4 cleanly transformed to Gnome (aptitude task kubuntu-desktop was removed and ubuntu-desktop installed). I want to switch off the sleep key, because I sometimes press it accidentally and the computer goes to sleep. Fortunately the sleep is correct, no applications crash, but still some network connections goes away and it is annoying and time wasting. I tried to switch it off with the power management tool, but there are only two options: sleep to memory and sleep to disk. I am sure, there was "do nothing" option in some other versions, but it isn't there.
How can I fix it? Is it possible to hack it with some "edit gnome variables directly" tool? I am experienced linux user, but not a gnome or X expert, and I don't like to solve simple problems (and I think this is a simple problem) with complicated scripting and strange hacks.

Asus u43f wont go into sleep/suspend mode. Either manually from the shut down menu or by closing the lid. the screen will turn off but the various lights do not turn of and hard drive continue to spin.
I found this suggested test with a google search but no fix
