I upgraded a couple weeks ago and now my monitor doesn't go to sleep like it used to.
The settings in powermanagment show that it should go to sleep after 10 minutes.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

All audio and sounds work just fine until I close my laptop's lid for a spell and reopen. On resume, there is simply no sound at all. It's all fixed when I restart, but being a laptop, I like being able to close the lid and come back to it every now and then.
I believe it's an issue from when Ubuntu changed their audio in the transition between Jaunty and Karmic, and it never got fixed. FYI, it worked just fine in Jaunty.
From past postings and research, it seems to be a lack of something 'waking up' or restarting when the lid opens. However, it's not 'alsa restart' or 'pulseaudio restart' or whatever. It's one little bug that keeps me from having sound without a restart.

You know that glitch where your monitor doesn't come back after switching off for power saving? That's gotten WAY worse since switching to Lucid. It used to happen every other day or so, now it happens 2-3 times a day. Songbird used to keep it from switching off on Karmic, but Songbird doesn't work on Lucid so that's out the window.
Also: as similar error happened when restarting after the glitch happened this latest time. Ubuntu started running its routine disk check and I hit C to skip it. The screen went down like it does in the Monitor Sleep glitch. I reset again, it did it again. Eventually, I just let it do the check. This has NEVER happened before.

I'm running a fresh 10.04 x86-64 on a thinkpad w500, using the default video driver. The monitor shuts off randomly, sometimes while I'm using it and requires me to trigger sleep mode and waking up to bring back the screen. When it shuts off, everything else seems to be running. (i.e. its not going to sleep) I've turned off screensaver, sleep, hibernation and installed the Caffeine util to no avail.

I have set up a hdparm configuration file ( /etc/udev/rules.d/50-hdparm.rules ) with :
Code: Select allACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sda", RUN+="/usr/bin/hdparm -B 255 -S 0 /dev/sda" .
This works correct when I power on my system, however after waking my computer from sleep mode , /dev/sda appears to operate with APM .
Is there a way I can make this setting to be persistent ,i.e. APM disabled when waking up from sleep mode?
I am running Debian Jessie x64.

See the pic. It happens in both Yakuake and Konsole. I am using inconsolita size 13, but the problem occurs irrespective of size.
I think it's only the bolded text which gets cutoff, but I am not sure. This problem is especially bad when writing something using nano or vim.
Just tried it with DejaVu Sans Mono, and the problem disappears. Weird. I would still like a solution, if you know anything, I am somewhat picky about inconsolita.

I have an internal hard drive and an external hard drive, both with about 350 GB of data. The data came from the same source, but over the last couple of years, different people have moved files around to different directories, and some files have been deleted. Now I want to merge all the files onto the internal hard drive. I estimate that 80% of the files on the external hard drive are the same, so I don't want to copy 290+ GB of data over when I already have it.
Therefore, I need a way to find just the files on the external hard drive that don't already exist on the internal one. In other words, I need to create two lists of file names irrespective of directories and compare them, selecting only the file names that exist in one list OR the other. I've Googled for solutions but can't find anything suitable. There are ways to create text files of the file names and compare them with diff, but they have to be in the same order, and since these files are in vastly different directories, that won't work.

I have trouble getting a gateway to the internet when setting eth0 with a fixed IP address. The gateway address (192.168.2.1 my modem/router) resets to 0.0.0.0 whenever I apply the changes. DHCP works fine but I need a fixed address for my server.

I often get responses from people who first say: "Are you sure? You want your network to be exposed to the outside world?" I am not experimenting on a Production Server of NASA or any Security Concern Department. Friends, there is no harm in experimenting on your personal computer or on a test computer which is isolated from the production environment. Look at hackers! What do they do? If they don't know how security is breached then how would they come up with security measures?
If my question reads... "How to let any user perform Administrative Tasks on a Linux System irrespective of his/her privileges on that particular system?" then I would not get the right answers in the first place. They will say... "You are letting everyone destroy your system... are you sure you want to do that?" My question is: Why should we restrict ourselves from experimenting even if it sounds weird to other people?
I give you an example where it is desirable to let an unprivileged user perform certain tasks. You want to know if there are any employees in your office who are storing videos in their home directory and filling up the disk space to a great amount. You have a department called "Command Center or Data Center Operations or Help Desk" call it whatever you would, whose work is to monitor such activities, and you create an account "monitor" for them to monitor such activities but they are not able to do them:

How can I stop my display going to sleep?
I've got the Power Management settings for mains power as:
Actions - put computer to sleep when inactive - never
Display - put display to sleep when inactive - never
Screensaver settings are:
Regard computer as idle set to 2 hours
Unticked Activate screensaver when computer is idle
Yet the screen still goes blank after a few minutes when I'm not using it.
I dual boot and it doesn't do it in Windows. It didn't do it in 8.10 or 7.10 either.

Whenever I close my laptop lid or just press the suspend button, it will go to sleep just fine. Perfect. Waking up is the problem. The drive light flashes for a few seconds, and then it just goes to back to normal but my display is still busted.

I have Kubuntu 10.4 cleanly transformed to Gnome (aptitude task kubuntu-desktop was removed and ubuntu-desktop installed). I want to switch off the sleep key, because I sometimes press it accidentally and the computer goes to sleep. Fortunately the sleep is correct, no applications crash, but still some network connections goes away and it is annoying and time wasting. I tried to switch it off with the power management tool, but there are only two options: sleep to memory and sleep to disk. I am sure, there was "do nothing" option in some other versions, but it isn't there.
How can I fix it? Is it possible to hack it with some "edit gnome variables directly" tool? I am experienced linux user, but not a gnome or X expert, and I don't like to solve simple problems (and I think this is a simple problem) with complicated scripting and strange hacks.

My display is set to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. When I go to sleep at night I don't want to wait 30 minutes for the monitor to shutdown, is there any way I can use the keyboard (like a hotkey) for :
1. Start my screensaver (when I go for 5-10 minutes afk for example).
2. Make the monitor go to sleep mode.

Asus u43f wont go into sleep/suspend mode. Either manually from the shut down menu or by closing the lid. the screen will turn off but the various lights do not turn of and hard drive continue to spin.
I found this suggested test with a google search but no fix
sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh
which returned:

I configured Dell Latitude D620 to go to sleep mode (suspend to ram) when i close the lid. It suspends ok and then I open the lid. It wakes up ok, but few seconds after goes to sleep again! So I need to press the power button to force it to wake up.
Sleep button works just fine. /etc/acpi/sleep.sh from console too.
/etc/acpi/events/lidbtn
Code:
event=button[ /]lid
action=/etc/acpi/sleep.sh
update:
I noticed that it always goes to sleep again when I wake up laptop by opening the lid. For example if I run /etc/acpi/sleep.sh, pm-suspend or press the sleep button laptop goes to sleep, then i close the lid and when i open it back - the problem occurs.

I'm running 9.10, how do I wake up from sleep or hibernation on my Dell XPS notebook? I have no problem putting the comp to sleep/hiber but can't seem to work out the keys to wake it up again.
I don't get any responses from the keys even when I try CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK, so all I can do is reach for the on/off switch.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and everynow and then I get this annoying problem. If I walk away for a bit, just upstairs to use the bathroom, sometimes when I come back the monitor is off and the power light is blinking. You know, like what monitors usually do when they are still powered on but the screensaver is done playing. However, this happens to me well before the 10 minutes that the screensaver is supposed to end.
It does not always happen, and I can't really isolate what may be causing it, as I never take a note of what I'm doing when I go pee. HOwever, I rarely do anything other that run VLC, Chrome, Firefox, or OpenOffice Writer.
The problem is that the screen won't wake up. Moving the mouse does nothing. Jamming some keys does nothing. Trying to go to text terminal does nothing. I have to either REISUB or hold down the power button on the tower.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my PC using NVIDIA GeForce 9150LE graphics and HP w2207h monitor. After using the Wubi installer and rebooting my computer, i select the ubuntu boot menu option and it says it is preparing to continue with the installation. after a countdown before it begins, my monitor goes to sleep. i used an eMachine monitor that i used in a previous installation of 9.10 that worked fine and reached the exact same problem. When booting from a live CD and selecting try without installing the screen comes up with a blinking underscore, and both monitors went to sleep. I believe its a problem with the graphics chip, but i dont know how to fix it.
