Ubuntu Security :: No Password Required For Encrypted Emails?

Apr 25, 2011

I'm running Thunderbird with Enigmail, and I have this very annoying problem. When I open an encrypted email for the first time, it asks me for my key password. It then remembers my password. This is fine for a few minutes, since I don't want to enter the password every time if I look at seven emails in five minutes. However, I WOULD like it to EVENTUALLY forget. At the moment, it doesn't even forget if I shut off Thunderbird. I have to restart my computer, in fact.

The preferences for Enigmail don't help. I've configured it to remember the password for 0 minutes, for example. I don't know how to edit the preferences for gpg-agent or anything else like that.

General :: Setup A SSH Key Between Servers So No Password Is Required?

Nov 2, 2010

I am trying to set up a SSH key between servers so no password is required when I have to "scp" files between the two. This is what I have tried so far but still requires a password:

Code:
ssh-keygen -t rsa
scp /home/<user>/.ssh/id_rsa <server2.com>:/home/<user>/.ssh/athorized_keys

When I scp after this I wasn't expecting to need a password but it is still prompting. Now I have used this same method before and it has worked great. The only difference this time is server2 is not in the same cage.

I'm new to linux and that forum, so a (possibly) silly question: I installed couchdb 1.0.1 w/ ymp (one-click) from http://software.opensuse.org/search?...3A11.2&lang=de and when I try to start it like /etc/init.d/couchdb start or sudo -i -u couchdb couchdb I am asked for a pwd, which I never put in. tried several standards or my own already. Didn't find anything in any documentation. Am I doing something wrong here?

Programming :: Automate The Password Prompt Required For Sudo Commands?

May 31, 2011

I have written a script to run commands on remote servers, it is working fine. But when I am running "sudo commands" on the remote servers, it asks for me password after prompting for ssh password. I am unable to automate this password prompt (which is just after ssh password prompt). This is the function I am using to provide passwords

Code:

pass ()
{
cd $DIR/"$dt1"_"$dt"
/usr/bin/perl << 'EOF'
use strict;

[code]....

I want the same function to be used , when it expects for sudo passwords for any of the below lines:

Code:

[sudo] password for vikas: orPassword: This is my "cmd" file passed in pass () function.

Code:

ssh -t -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no 192.168.1.100 "bash rcmds"

This is my script output

Quote:

[vikas@box1 ~]$ ./rscript.sh
++ rm -rf /home/vikas/May_31
++ mkdir -p /home/vikas/May_31
++ set +x

[code]....

how to automate the password prompt required for sudo commands.

Ubuntu :: Resolutions For Black Screen Of Sleep?

Aug 13, 2011

I generally suspend between work sessions. Occasionally, after a long time of running, my display goes black and is unresponsive. This seems to happen when I have fallen asleep while working. Now, I don't think someone has sneaked in and done something to my computer! Anyway, all the applications are still running (observed by bringing up the console, top/ps) but the X session does not respond. I have tried the Control-Alt-Backspace keystroke that is suggested for restarting X Window.

Over several times, I have experimented with killing specific processes from the console to see if I could restore life to the session, without having to shutdown. Today I noted that if I blast the compiz process it did come back. Of course, there may well be a specific combination of steps I did before that step that resulted in it working.

Ubuntu :: Lock Screen After Sleep/Hibernate But NOT Screensaver?

Jul 29, 2010

running 10.04 Netbook edition. I would like my screen to lock after the netbook goes to sleep but NOT after it enters the screensaver. is this possible? i use my laptop to read in the university a lot and to save power tell it to go into black screensaver after a minute of inactivity. if i enable the lock option i have to enter the password each and every time after the black screensaver activates. but if i deactivate this option and then put the netbook into sleep/hibernate mode it doesn't ask for a password (which i would like) is there any way configure separate passwords for these instances or are they firmly linked?

Ubuntu :: Disabled Lock Screen On Sleep Feature

Oct 25, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and in short, in my experience, it's terrible. All it did was bug my machine. When I enter the wrong credentials on login, it spins forever "checking" so I have to restart the computer. When I enter any credentials to unlock my computer after a lock screen (even if they are perfectly correct) it spins forever "checking." So I disabled the lock screen on sleep feature, which I hate having to do because I live on a college campus where anyone could pick up the computer and look at my notes without a password, but I have no alternative. Also the fingerprint scnaner on my lenovo worked perfectly before the upgrade and now it doesn't, it's apparent that it is very messed up, lighting up sometimes, and mostly not when it should. Additionally, I can't update my computer or download anything from the software center because it believes my root password to be incorrect. no matter what. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered in day to day ubuntu use and I might just switch OS's because this is just counterproductive and a waste of time.

Debian Multimedia :: Screen Remains Black After Sleep Mode

Feb 20, 2011

I recently came to Debian. As I have an ati card, I tried the proprietary drivers first, but then came back to radeon (open-source). In the process, I think I may have broke my xorg.conf . Sometimes, when the monitor goes into sleep mode, when I came back, the screen remains black (sometimes I see just the cursor).

Here is my xorg.conf
# NOXORGCONFEXISTED: No X.org configuration file existed when this backup was created.

Also, I have lots of backups in my X11 folder, like xorg.conf.fglrx-3, xorg.conf.original-1, or backup.xorg.conf. Is it safe to remove them? What should I do about the main xorg.conf?

It's just annoying me a little and wouldnt mind just being able to open my laptop and go. also same kinda problem with installing software, always asking for passwords but I guess i can live with that one.
