Server :: How To Force User To Login To System Using LDAP
Sep 18, 2010I am new to ldap. I've installed openldap server in a centos but yet to test it. My question is how to force user to login to the system using ldap instead of non-ldap login? For example, I created some users in the ldap server, these users are exist in /etc/passwd, when ssh login to server as user, it normally authenticates through /etc/passwd file without being forced to use ldap.

Mar 16, 2011I have now been trying to find an answer for the following for a while and can't seem to get anything.On previous linux distros we had the option available "passwd -e" which allowed us to force the user to change their passwords upon the next login.s functionality however seems to be excluded from latest linux distros (currently using RHEL 5.4)...Does anybody know how the same effect can be achieved and perhaps any idea on why this option was removed as it was great for securing passwords

Oct 28, 2010I am using red hat 5. It is asking me for a user name at the terminal. I do not understand what it is asking of me. A user name was never established during installation of the program. it did ask for a root password during installation which i provided. At the terminal i did try typing "root" for the log in and the actual root password for the password. It gave me administrative access.
However, i don't know the correct command that will take me to the desktop. For windows i simply typed in win or exit to go to the main windows desktop. Linux is foreign to me... can anyone help? I would be greatful for the advice. I am a windows junky from way back.

Jul 22, 2010I have been running 10.04 since the launch after upgrading from 9.10. Today when I logged in as normal, instead of taking me to the desktop I get a white console on the top left corner with the normal login background. I typed 'sudo X' but it says the server is already active for display 0. Please advise what I can do. I am reasonablyew to Linux so apologies if this has been discussed before (but I couldn't find any info here or on google).

I tried vlock and away, but with vlock it says 'this terminal is not a virtual console', and away can't seem to lock all consoles.

Mar 28, 2011My laptop is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have my own account (custom) and 1 desktop user account.
When I log in under my account and switch to the desktop user account, I can connect to the internet. However, if I start the laptop and log into the desktop user account first I get no internet connection and the same when I switch to my own (custom) account. What gives?

Nov 5, 2010Two or three times on a daily basis it just freezes and I do not know why. For example, I am doing some minor coding, surfing the web and just some regular stuff and suddenly, out of nowhere, it just freezes. I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.

Unfortunately I get only read permissions, while need write too.There are no any entries in fstab, so I do not know what does handle automounting and how to edit options to force mounting with write permission to user (root obviously can write). Are they hald options or any other app does this? Where to edit them? The drive is not permanently ON, just switch it when need, so it has to work every time I put it on.

Apr 26, 2010I have successfully installed Debian on a Sparc Ultra5, 270MHz SparcIIi CPU, 384MB RAM, 40GB HD. However, once Debian tries to load Gnome (right before the login screen) the screen goes blank, and so the machine becomes unusable. I booted of the NetInstall CD, into rescue mode, and executed a shell, but apparently there is currently a problem when running nano from a live CD, so I can not edit the xorg.conf file when I boot the live CD. So, I would like to just boot the install into single user mode, but I dont know how. Currently, when the Ultra5 is powered on, it tries to boot with command "boot", so I hit "Stop A". From there I type "boot Disk1" to boot Debian normally. To boot from a CD, I would type "boot cdrom" So any idea on how I can boot from Disk1 in Single User Mode?
My only other idea is to hook up another monitor I have which may be able to deal with whatever resolution Gnome is defaulting to. However, Id rather just boot into single user mode.

My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show login screen always on primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? Jan 10, 2011I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. After installing the ATI drivers, I had to tweak GRUB to get the nice splash screen back during boot. Then, I installed drivers for my TV Tuner (Hauppauge 2250). The card works fine. However, my boot now goes splash screen to a terminal login for around 10 sec where system messages also show up to the GUI Login screen. I was wondering if there was anyway to return to a normal boot.

Dec 14, 2010I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user.However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory.Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.
Fedora Installation :: F13 To F14 No Shell At Login / After Upgrading Cant Login On User?
Jun 3, 2011yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

Sep 25, 2010While I was trying to drag the Desktop icon to the places sidepane in nautilus file browser so that I can have it above Documents icon, I accidentally dropped it in Documents icon. I immediately deleted the "Desktop" shortcut that was created in "/home/user/Documents" but it was too late already and the damage has been done. When I try to create a new document on my desktop, it says "Error while coying to Desktop There was an error getting information about the destination. Show more details Error stating file '/home/user/Documents/' Desktop':No such file or directory" Now, I know that my desktop now is pointing me to a location in Documents folder which doesn't exist at all. I tried looking for any available settings/options in gconf-editor, but only in vain.

The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Is there some setting I have missed to be able to see the same from any computer (logon through remote desktop).
