Ubuntu :: Kubuntu 10.4 - How To Change The Desktop Theme

May 2, 2010

I just installed a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.4. A simple question, how do I change the desktop theme? I used to find it by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting Desktop Settings or what it is called (my system is in Italian), now itsn't there.

I would like to change the login theme for Kubuntu 10.10. How do I do that? I go into the Login Screen Settings and click Get New Themes, I choose the one I want, download it, and it never shows up, none of them do except the default Ethias or whatever it is called. What do I do?

Ubuntu :: How To Change Desktop Theme

Jun 25, 2011

I am running 11.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1500 series laptop. I updated my computer yesterday, and now my desktop theme is different. In 10.04, changing the theme was easy, just go to appearance settings and choose. For some reason, when I go to appearance and select a theme now, the only options I get are customize and install, neither of which do anything to help me change my theme. The install button takes me to my home directory...presumably to pick a theme file. But I can't find any themes in my home directory.

Fedora :: Mouse Theme / Only Some Symbols Change / Other Stay Standard Theme

Feb 21, 2011

I updated my laptop from F12 to F14 via preupgrade. After doing so, the standard mouse theme was active. So I installed the one I like again and set it as mouse theme. For some reason it is now a mixture of the one I installed and the standard theme. If I open a place in nautilus the displayed symbol is the right one while waiting, if I open something in control center I get the standard icon. Same problem with drag and drop, I always get the hand from the standard theme. I also tried the former standard theme Bluecurve and it was the same problem. Can anyone tell me what goes wrong with the theme? What has changed in F14, that the older themes won't work?

Ubuntu :: KDM Theme Manager On Kubuntu 10.10

Feb 10, 2011

Only problem is when there's no information to read I can't learn anything. So I've looked and looked but I can't find anything on the KDM theme manage that comes with kubuntu 10.10.

SO here's what I want to do:

All I want to do is just change the login and splash screens to something more to my liking when I got to System settings -> System Administration -> Login Screen , which is the KDM that comes on kubuntu (trust me I looked for kdmtheme under KpackageKit I get a chance to pick new themes I go through and find something I like and go to install and it doesn't show. All I get is the original one and that's it.

why it doesn't show up or how I may go about changing these two things

Ubuntu :: Reverting Kubuntu Usplash Theme From 10.04

Apr 25, 2010

A while back had installed the kubuntu-desktop package onto my normal Ubuntu 9.10 install in order to use several KDE apps (mostly KGet). It changed my bootsplash to the Kubuntu one at that point which I found mildly annoying (as I still use the standard Gnome interface - I just wanted the KDE libs/apps installed). Anyways, I've updated to version 10.04 RC and the Kubuntu splash persisted (I thought the upgrade would replace it), and now the colors on it are corrupted.I found some instructions on how to revert it (sudo update-alternatives --config usplash-artwork.so), but that command doesn't seem to work in 10.04 anymore.

Not sure if this is normal, but I'm also having a problem where when logged into Gnome, when inside of a KDE app my cursor theme reverts to default until I leave that windows. Pretty strange. I thought it was picking up the cursor theme from KDE for a while but after logging in there I noticed that KDE is not using the same default theme. Not sure if this is a normal problem or if it's just a side affect of me upgrading rather than doing a clean install of 10.04 (my 9.10 install itself was an upgrade from 9.04).

Ubuntu :: Can't Switch Back To Theme After Trying Out Kubuntu

Jun 2, 2011

To the best of my recollection, here's what happened. I installed Ubuntu 10, all default options. No custom themes. Using Gnome. I installed Kubuntu. Again, all default options. Still using Gnome, though. I upgraded to 11. Then, when I try to switch back to Ubuntu, I can't get the default Ubuntu theme to stick. When I log in, it looks correct for about twenty seconds, then everything switches to Ambiance or Plymouth or something else. Basically, I'm trying to get the brown task bar back and I can't. It's all light-colored.

Ubuntu :: Changing The Kubuntu Boot Splash Theme At Startup?

Jul 22, 2010

I recently installed kubuntu-kde and it changed the boot splash theme from an orange logo on a purple background to tourqoise on blue. How do I change it back?

In KDE, I can navigate to Settings > System Settings > Appearance > Splash Screen but that's not what i'm looking for. I'm not trying to change KDE's Splash Screen that shows when you load the KDE window manager after logging in as a user. Further, I'm not trying to change grub's boot splash image, which renders this guide useless.

I want to change the boot splash theme which lasts 25 seconds that is shown between the time your select the kernel in grub2 and the time gdm loads. Right now it says "Kubuntu" in an ugly way and I want to change it back to what it was originally before I installed KDE. I want it to say "Ubuntu" as it should by default.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Change GDM Theme Any More

Mar 29, 2010

I can't change my GDM theme any more nor will I be able to in the next version of Ubuntu! I know why (the gnome developers took the feature out in the re-write of GDM). I have two questions. Why is GDM so bloated that they can't re-write all of the features? It also seems to take a lot of resources (more than the others). My second question. When, if ever, will I be able to customize my gdm theme again?

Ubuntu :: Change Gdm Theme In 10.04?

May 22, 2010

What happened to the gdm configuration screen where I could change the default gdm theme? This seems to have disappeared from ubuntu 10.04, and in my personal opinion, the white/purple default theme of the new gdm is terrible and I would like to change it. Where is the GUI for this in lucid, and why has it disappeared?

EDIT: System -> Administration -> Login Screen only allows me to change automatic logins and other features like that. The GUI I'm referring to isn't there.

Ubuntu :: Different Theme On Each Desktop ?

Aug 26, 2010

Is it possible to install a different theme on each of the multiple virtual desktops? For example, I thought it would be interesting to have the default Ubuntu theme installed on the primary desktop, on the secondary desktop have a Windows 7 theme, on the third desktop have a Mac OSX theme, and perhaps another theme on the fourth.

After looking at sites like these I am interested in finding out if this is possible:

I realize switching between themes may be a tough thing for a computer to do quickly, but if it is possible I'd at least like to try it on my desktop, which has enough processing power to at least make the transition time bearable. Does anyone know if/how I can set virtual desktop specific themes?

Ubuntu :: Can't Change System Theme

Jul 21, 2010

Recently I noticed my system theme changed itself to a grey blocky look that I can only assume is the gnome default. I cannot change it back to anything else, like Ambiance or Dust through the appearance window.

I run Compiz and Emerald for effects and themes. Compiz effects and Emerald's window borders work fine, I have my Emerald theme but the icons, menus and buttons are all this ugly old look and I cannot change it. I have tried reloading the window manager, rebooting, switching Compiz and Emerald off and using Metacity and GTK Window Decorator, but the theme doesn't change. I can't change buttons, menus, colors or icons.

When I open System > Prefs > Appearance, I can choose a theme and oddly enough it changes the theme for the appearance window, but only the appearance window and nothing else.

How can I fix this and get my old theme back?
