Ubuntu Installation :: System Reboots Everytime Try To Start 10.04

Jul 21, 2010

I have used ubuntu 8.04 in a dual boot system together with windows xp and wanted to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04.

Since the upgrade did not work (the usr partition was to small and I couldn't make it big enough) I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386 edition and tried to install it.

Everything worked find during the installation process but when I tried to start ubuntu I could only see the ubuntu desktop for a second and then the computer began to reboot.

Then I thought that I can solve this problem by installing ubuntu 8.04.4 again and trying to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04.

After the installation I could start ubuntu 8.04.4 without problems but after upgrading to ubuntu 10.04 the same problem occurs again: ubuntu 10.04 causes the computer to reboot every time I try to start ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Browser Glitching In Kubuntu 10.10?

Oct 16, 2010

I have tried literally every browser that there is to offer in the repositories and it persists that they all glitch. For instance, when you scroll your mouse over anything on the screen that you could click, it seems to change from one thing to another and the only way to get it go to back is to use your sidebar to scroll down and then back up. Not that it's a huge issue, it's just really annoying when I try to click something and it turns out to turn into something else. Also, not a huge deal, but the flash plugins seem to work quite well except when I try to play games. For example, when I try to play bloons tower defense 4 expansion, it will flash repeatedly until I am a few levels into the game.

It just kindof seems like a bug that needs to be worked out by the kubuntu team.

Also, if anyone tells that they are having the same issues, did you upgrade from 10.04 or did you do a new install? I was just thinking that because I upgraded that there may be some conflicting files somewhere in there.

Ubuntu :: Can't Switch Back To Theme After Trying Out Kubuntu

Jun 2, 2011

To the best of my recollection, here's what happened. I installed Ubuntu 10, all default options. No custom themes. Using Gnome. I installed Kubuntu. Again, all default options. Still using Gnome, though. I upgraded to 11. Then, when I try to switch back to Ubuntu, I can't get the default Ubuntu theme to stick. When I log in, it looks correct for about twenty seconds, then everything switches to Ambiance or Plymouth or something else. Basically, I'm trying to get the brown task bar back and I can't. It's all light-colored.

General :: Adding Memory From Dedicated Kubuntu Partition Back To Vista

Jan 16, 2010

I decided to remove my Kubuntu partition until I can fully dedicate my time to figuring out linux (right now I need Windows for certain things, i.e. flash and my zune).

I fixed the MBR, but the problem now is I have a 142.77 GB partition of free space. What do I do? Do I just delete it?

When I click delete this is the message I get:
"This is an Extended partition. This partition will become inaccessable if you delete it. Are you sure you want to delete this partition?"

I am essentially asking if this just means the partition will be gone and not the memory, and where the memory goes if I delete the partition.

Ubuntu :: Get Kubuntu To Automatically Go Into Boot From Cd On Start Up?

Jul 16, 2011

My son dropped my laptop and broke the screen so I decided to use it as a project.

1 I managed to install kubuntu on it unfortunately it was the 64bit version not the 34bit one. The problem I'm having is that the external monitor only works after kubuntu boots up so I can not view the set-up boot options. What I want to do is put win 7 on it as I have a mate that needs a computer and he is pretty computer illiterate.

2:It will boot into G-parted and I have made a ntfs partition for the win 7 OS to go into. I have another duel boot desktop so followed what I did with that. The problem is that as I cannot see the initial start up screen and can get it to boot from the win7 boot disc that I have(this is a working cd I have used before) Is there a way I can get Kubuntu to automatically go into boot from cd on start up etc?

Ubuntu :: GUI Doesn't Always Start On Startup (Kubuntu)

Mar 13, 2010

A lot of times when I start up my computer, instead of the graphical login screen I'm brought to a CLI login. If I log in and do "startx," it'll start KDE, but sound doesn't work and the shutdown/restart options disappear. (The logout option is still there.) It's inconsistent; sometimes it'll start the GUI and sometimes it won't. I have yet to find out what causes it to work right and what causes it to bring me to the CLI. When it doesn't work, if I run "shutdown -r now" or "shutdown -h now," it'll start the GUI as the computer is shutting down. I've tried Ctrl+Alt+F7 when it's brought me to the CLI, but it didn't do anything

Ubuntu Installation :: New Grub From 10.10 Will Not Start The Existing Kubuntu 10.04?

Dec 18, 2010

I have been successfully triple-booting Windoze and 2 varieties of Linux on my desktop for some years now with very few problems. The latest configuration which I have been using for 6 months or so is Kubuntu 10.04 & Ubuntu 10.04. The last version installed was Kubuntu 10.04 and on installation it's version of grub found Ubuntu 10.04 no problem (other than a minor problem with partition numbering which was manually fixed) and all was well.

I have just upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (by clean install rather than version upgrade) and the new grub from Ubuntu 10.10 will not start the existing Kubuntu 10.04, I just get "error: file not found".The grub.cfg file from Ubuntu 10.10 is completely different (copy attached) but the partition references & numbers etc. are correct so why will the existing Kubuntu 10.04 not start ? Windoze starts OK.
