I messed up and hit "ok" for a partial upgrade. My fault entirely.
Now Grub finds no kernel to boot to, only a disk diagnostic test runs when I try to boot.
Is there a way to reload a kernel to dev/sha1 from the live cd terminal?
I'd rather not lose the data on the drive with a fresh install if I don't have to.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.While running a partial update through System->adminstration->update-manager. I am facing error as 'Error Authenticating some packages". Please find the attached, screenshot of the error and sources.list file output.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.
Yesterday I ran updates that moved me from kernel Fedora (2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686.PAE) to Fedora (2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686.PAE). After reboot my system hangs trying to start X. I can use altF2 and log in that way but when I try to start X it fails - no screen found. I backed off to my previous kernel and used the package manager to remove the updated kernel and noticed that when it uninstalled it did not take any kmod packages with it. I assume not having an associated kmod may have been the problem? If so, how do I find the correct one to install?

After a large partial update (including nvidia drivers as well as a lot of other stuff - sorry for the imprecision but it was long enough to merit stepping away to eat dinner), my computer crashed when I tried to shut it down, and now when I try to boot up, it takes me as far as the login screen (minus the logins) with the mouse pointer active. It plays the Ubuntu drums and then that's it for activity. The mouse moves with no problem but there's nothing to click on. Going into recovery mode causes the system to hang. I can only access my files via a live cd.
When the computer first crashed and before it goes to the almost-but-not-quite-a-login screen, it displays the following message:

I'm finding it ironic that the error occurs in a "sanity check" because it's costing me mine. Is there a solution that doesn't involve a new install?
I'm running an Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM and an nvidia MX4000 video card with 128 MB RAM (yes, its last OS was written in cuneiform ;p)

Just wondering if anyone else has this partial upgrade being offered to them: ffmpeg, libavdevice52, libpostproc51, libswscale0 are held back (grayed out) in Update Manager.
I only use Update Manager manager to see if there are any updates and then use sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get-upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to actually examine the updates as it shows if anything will be removed without anything to replace it.
And I know to never do a partial upgrade.
Update Manager displays "Partial Upgrade" with the files listed above grayed out.
I did use sudo apt-get-upgrade to install a few packages earlier that were safe to install and now -

I am running Ubuntu 10.10
I am using an Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN built in adapter.
When I was prompted for a system-update I clicked Update and apparently something failed an only a partial-update happened. Now my wireless/Ethernet connections do not work. I tried enabling all Network Adapters but that option is no longer available in the "Preference/Administration" tab.
Note: I cannot access the internet at all on that partition so I can't download any updates from repositories.
I got a notification that there was an upgrade available today in ubuntu 9.10 64, after the update i restarted my system and while booting i encountered this error message:
Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (8,17)
does this have something to do with the OS looking at the wrong hd?
theres no command prompt to actually do anything and i tried booting in safe mode and had the same problem. Let me know what i can do!
after yesterday's update to kernel 2.6.35.10-72 my grub.conf didn't get updated and ll /boot shows that neither vmlinuz or initramfs exist for that kernel. uname -r though tells me I'm running 2.6.35.10-72.
How can I do that? and on another more reallystic matter how can I generate the missing files so I can manually update grub.conf?
I have installed mpd on my Arch box and it starts correctly with "/etc/rc.d/mpd start" My clients (ncmpc,sonata and gmpc) connect. My problem is that I can't update the client - at least when I try I only get a partial update. I have around 5 gb of music but only 3 albums appear (2 different artists.)

I've been trying to install nvidia drivers yesterday, so I went to runlevel 3, ran the .bin installer and it came up with error: missing kernel-devel and kernel-source.
So I go yum install kernel-devel, it does, but it doesnt find anything like kernel-source.

I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. View 2 Replies View Related9.04 this morning updated my kernel to I believe it is 2.6.28.18 and upon the reboot I had no desktop. It booted wanting to go into low graphics.
So I drop to shell and stop the gdm and try to run the latest nvidia run file I have and it hangs saying I have a x server running.
Otherwise I am needing assistance with getting my desktop back! I can boot into an older kernel and if need be I would like to roll back that latest update this morning, but once again I am forgetting the command line for that.
Ran the updater, went to boot to Win7 to use Photoshop and realized that the grub menu was gone. Ubuntu boots by default now. I tried running "sudo update-grub" at a virtual terminal and while it listed the various linux kernels ok, it then got caught in a loop spitting out some crazy looking errors. I rebooted and Ubuntu came up fine. I tried running "sudo update-grub" again from the gnome terminal and it hangs the whole computer for a few minutes and finally gives me this:

I received an update to my kernel through the update manager (updated from ****.32.14 to ****.32.19, or something like that) but grub still shows the old kernel and not the updated one. Was this not a full kernel update and only a patch or do I have to do something to use the new kernel? I'm new bear with me if this doesn't make any sense.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the following strange thing with a RHEL4 installation. Since last week, the system did a reboot and now something is really fucked up. During boot we get the following messages (don't care about 'strange' typo's, my colleague typed it 'blind' from the screen)

The strange thing is that we never see a 'could not mount blabla' or similar messages. First we thought it was a failing kernel update by plesk, but even after manually updating the kernel with RHN RPM's, still the same message. Booting with rescue mode and then chroot the system works. After that we even can start things like plesk and so on.
We double checked things with another RHEL4 install, and at least two things were odd:
1: the working machine has /dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1, the broken one doesn't
2: some files on /dev didn't have group root, but 252
We tried to recreate the /dev/dm-X nodes with [vgmknodes -v], output:

A fdisk /dev/sda shows: /dev/sda2 XX XXX XXXXX Linux LVM (I removed the numbers because this line is from another machine, but rest was identical)

A recent kernel update seems to have misplaced the Kernel Headers. VMWare needs these headers and cannot find them. Attempting to run VMWARE gets the message: Kernel headers for version 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop were not found.
View 4 Replies View Relatedafter update to kernel-2.6.18-164.el5 one of the 2 NIC's of my machine are only found at 1 of 4 reboots. Using the old one kernel-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 all is fine. This are the to NIC's:

I was just about to reboot the system when I realized that it runs VMWare Server Instance that will most likely fail to restart after kernel upgrade (I had a hard time fixing it after previous kernel update). From F12 to F13. Is there anything I should remove before updating? I have few programs isntalled from source/binary installers in /usr for example. Would it cause problems?
And is there any chance to be able to switch from a 32 bit kernel to 64 bit kernel during the update? The hardware is capable of this.
I toyed with my desktop panels, and now I don't see my update notifications, although I can see every thing else. I have the notification area and indicator applt session on my panel but still can't see the update notification, when running "ps -A| grep update-notifier" I find it running.... what am I missing...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Hardy 8.04 LTS 64bit. The Update Manager updated the kernel and then asked if I wanted to use the local version of the grub menu. The boot menu was getting so long I edited it to shorten it. Other options were also offered, like the builder's version, but I chose the local version and since then the new kernel doesn't show up in the boot menu. Sudo update-grub doesn't restore it to the menu.
How do I undo the local version of the boot menu so I can see the newest kernel?
I did the latest patch/update to lucid this morning and it would appear that my Volume control has gone missing from the task bar. There doesn't seem to be a volume control in Applications > Sounds & Video either. I am sure this has to do with the patch upgrade that I installed as everything was working fine before. For that matter, I had no system sounds either and it took a power off reboot for that to come back. My Music program (atunes) is not working properly either and keeps locking up. How do I reverse this patch or get my system back to a functional state?
