I've been trying to install nvidia drivers yesterday, so I went to runlevel 3, ran the .bin installer and it came up with error: missing kernel-devel and kernel-source.
So I go yum install kernel-devel, it does, but it doesnt find anything like kernel-source.
How do I fix this issue? I have Fedora 12, and I ran drivers from:[URL]..
I installed the latest kernel liquorix (2.6.35) but when i want to install the Nvidia driver downloaded on the Nvidia website (256.53), i have an error message because Nvidia doesn't found the kernel source tree.
I install linux-image-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb, linux-headers-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb and build-essential. I don't understand why the installation doesn't works.
I'm attempting to install the driver for my atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet adapter (in my Lenovo laptop) on my newly installed RHEL5 system (it's not currently being recognized).
I tried using: 'make install' but hit an error "Makefile:61: *** Linux kernel source not found."
After this, I tried: 'sudo yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers'
To rectify this, but hit this error "No package kernel-devel available" (and the same for the headers). What should I do?
I used Backtrack 5 and Fedora, basically I'm trying to install my wireless card but I don't have these installed to make && sudo. I burned the iso images for backtrack and fedora and booted my computer from them but can't figure out how to install kernel-devel on backtrack for example. I dled yum onto my flash drive but can't figure out how to install it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed CentOS 5.4 & am trying to install VirtualBox on it. To install VirtualBox I run the command:
yum localinstall path/Virtualbox.rpm
It runs through the dependency check & says everything is fine. It installs the rpm & then says that compiling of the kernel module failed & that VirtualBox will not start until this is fixed, & that the most like cause is that the kernel sources are not installed.
I have installed the kernel-devel package & have the kernel source tree located at /usr/src/kernel/2.6....
So I am new to linux and i upgraded my kernel to 4.3.3 and to add the bfq patch. When i enter the command make install I get the following Code:

Now my ethernet drivers are not working.
i would like to install the newest nvidia driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-280.13 on my Suse 11.1 with kernel. kernel-pae-2.6.27.56-0.1.1
however the nvidia driver installer claims that kernel source and devel are missing and I don' know how to get and install them for this kernel.
currently I'm using a kernel from kernel-mainline [url], because thermal won't work satisfying with the shipped kernel from ubuntu and would like to install tp_smapi (including modules hdaps and thinkpad_ec), but the installation failed, because the system pretending, that kernel-headers missing.

I am running an Hp Pavillion dv6000 with the Broadcom card that never seems to work for Linux. I recently talked with my friend who said he found a way to get it work.following his instructions I opened Synaptic and checked the package bmcwl-kernel-source to be installed.I went through the process of it all and it said it had install successfully. I restarted the computer and when I tried to enter my operating system I got this error "Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(8,1)"
I have previous versions of Linux on my computer so I can still get in to those if need be but I don't know how to undo what I did or why it isn't working for that matter. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am getting this error and how I can fix it?
It sounds like he's making a difference between the kernel "source code" and the kernel itself(as in the downloaded file/ files) but the way he talks about both is the same.So then, if one had already "installed" the "kernel sources code," why would he need the "tarball with the newest Linux kernel?" He's already "installed" a kernel, right?

Most of the references I've found talk about modifying the current CentOS kernel using the RPM way. I'm assuming the setup program is using the output from uname -r to determine the kernel, the problem is the kernel sources I've got from yum do not jibe with the uname value.
I have been getting some compile errors here and there and have read that possibly I need to install the kernel-devel package.I am running 2.6.33.4 which I built from source.I have also built and installed the kernel-headers.I cannot find the kernel-devel for 2.6.33.4 anywhere, can I build it myself from the kernel source?

from what I understand kernel-devel does not bring in ALL the header files for install modules. so what i would like to know is how to install true headers instead of using kernel-devel. I found one tutorial, but it was way out of date.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried installing the VBOX additions. But after running the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run file, building of the kernel modules failed. It gave following message: The headers of the currently running kernel were not found. If the current compilation fails then probably this could be the reason. The missing package can be probably installed with yum install kernel-devel-2.6.40.4-5.fc15.i686.
But when I tried installing the above kernel headers and devel package, it says no such package were found.kernel is 2.6.40.4-5.fc15.i686 but the kernel headers are not available for this version. They are available for previous versions i.e 2.6.40.3-0.fc15.i686.should I downgrade my kernel version (if it's possible) or is there any way things can work out. I have enabled 3D accelaration and given the memory of 128 MB for display. The memory for Virtual Box is 1 GB and hard Disk is 8 GB. The host system is windows 7.
i was not able to install alsa...showing the error checking for directory with kernel source... Please install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel sources (default is /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.el5xen/source). my friends installed the alsa for cent os 5.4...how to rectify this...

1. Does minimum installation not drop on a kernel or initrd with ext3 support? I can't imagine that's true, but have to ask.
2. The USB stick is single partition ext3. Maybe there is some limitation specifically related to USB stick booting that requires boot to be FAT16 or FAT32? Except the CentOS 5.5 installer refuses to let me install on either FAT.
3. How can I do the equivalent of lsmod on a linux installation that will not boot? i.e. I have CentOS x86_64 running in VirtualBox, I can plug the USB stick in there, so how do I get information on the USB stick's kernel and initrd if I can't boot from it?
4. Is it possible to rebuild the i386 based initrd on this USB stick, when the computer is not booted from that stick, with a system that's x86_64 based?
System Info:
Dell Latitude i686 Laptop which has run CentOS 5.5 and Fedora 12,13,14 in the past, and boots from Fedora 14 Live CD transferred to a USB stick. So I know USB booting is possible on this machine, and this stick.
The process of creating the stick:
CentOS 5.5 i386 on a USB stick. Old Dell i686 laptop which has previously run CentOS 5.5 installed from DVD, and has successfully booted from this same USB stick holding transferred Fedora 12,13,14 Live CDs. CentOS 5.5 was installed onto the USB drive directly by the CentOS 5.5 DVD installer (running virtualized in VirtualBox 4.02 on Mac OS X 10.6.5.). No errors or complaints during installation.
For whatever reason, the installer did not do some things correctly. First Grub wasn't working correctly, I got that sorted out and have the Grub+CentOS splash screen, it finds vmlinuz and the initrd, and then I get a kernel panic.
Ext3 was built into the kernel and that's why I'm getting this message. I do not know how the installer would have dropped a kernel or initrd during instalation that that don't contain such a basic thing that obviously comes in linux kernel 2.6.18-89 EL.
