I am using OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME. I also use the Tumbleweed and Packman for Tumbleweed repositories. Accoording to uname -r, my current kernel version is 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop.
How do I safely update to the latest stable kernel version?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm running Hardy 8.04 LTS 64bit. The Update Manager updated the kernel and then asked if I wanted to use the local version of the grub menu. The boot menu was getting so long I edited it to shorten it. Other options were also offered, like the builder's version, but I chose the local version and since then the new kernel doesn't show up in the boot menu. Sudo update-grub doesn't restore it to the menu.
How do I undo the local version of the boot menu so I can see the newest kernel?
This may sound ridiculous, but after installing Debian 5 (from CD 1) in my laptop, ASUS UL80VT, it fails to detect the Ethernet device. The device is "Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Ethernet Controller". I guess the problem comes with the old kernel of version 5. I was intending to compile the latest kernel anyway. But the problem is is there any heads up i need to download the kernel and trying to compile it? Is there anyone who uses Debian on UL80VT. If there is, does it works okay?In short I want to compile the latest kernel, hoping it will fix the Ethernet device. There are installers available with the latest kernel. But I want to do it on my own.

Now, every time my system starts, it loads up the startup fedora bar, and it gets stuck at the bar being loaded 100%.I press ESC to see what is going on behind the scenes, and I notice that the problem is that atd cannot start up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedDual Boot: Fedora 12 and XP Dell 505I've had trouble with the latest kernel update.I updated a bunch of packages recently (including Xorg and kernel), and noticed a severe flickering after the update on my center monitor (Samsung T260 - the laptop display did not exhibit the flickering behavior). I backed out all the changes and started updating package by package. After I updated the kernel (again) I rebooted and here's where the fun part is -
I no longer get anything, except the cursor. No grub menu, no grub prompt. I rebooted and ran the rescue disk and followed the procedurery and point grub at the right boot partition - see here. However (obviously or I wouldn't be posting) that failed to work. I still get a blinking cursor and dead system on boot up.
The latest Kernel update (2.6.35-25-generic) killed all my sound output on my Toshiba Satellite M115.
I tried reinstalling all ALSA components and plugins. No luck there.
Rebooting into 2.6.35-24-generic fixes the problem, in that my sound works again.
I was using audacious happily, but after the dist-update last week I can't get is working anymore. The error message is:

Solution: I copied /usr/lib64/libedit.so.0.0.27 from a previous install and symlinked /usr/lib64/libedit.so.0 to it.
Yesterday I ran updates that moved me from kernel Fedora (2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686.PAE) to Fedora (2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686.PAE). After reboot my system hangs trying to start X. I can use altF2 and log in that way but when I try to start X it fails - no screen found. I backed off to my previous kernel and used the package manager to remove the updated kernel and noticed that when it uninstalled it did not take any kmod packages with it. I assume not having an associated kmod may have been the problem? If so, how do I find the correct one to install?

Is this the latest version. i don't know how old 11.4 is, but there weren't a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.
Kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.
Really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.
Would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?
I used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.
