I have recently installed Karmic to a portable hard drive (WD elements 500gb) so that when it is plugged in the grub can boot and i can go into ubuntu 9.10 and when it is out windows 7/vista dual boot screen shows. When in ubuntu, there is no driver for my 'NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS' graphics card available so i am stuck with the no effects mode and the games are poor.
Previously i had this same setup (but with jaunty) and the graphics card worked well, i could have all the wobbly window effects etc, but now i can't have anything.How could i get a driver for this?BTW, it is running through USB 2.0, although it is very fast.

But the ubuntu installer doesnt see my hard disk. when i run fdisc -l, the only thing that i see is my usb from wich i'm booting. I know that this is a common problem, searched for help on the web for hours and nothing worked.

View 2 Replies View Relatedhow to get linux onto an old laptop (dell inspiron 2600, 1GHZ, 120MB RAM). the cd drive doesn't recognize CD's anymore and in boot menu, "Setup Utility" the usb drives aren't recognized. the usb drive or pen drive boots in another desktop just fine. i need to somehow install xubuntu or crunchbang or something lite but must do it using net install. i see lots of tutorials but they are either too complicated or unknown source, like "inslux." and not too complicated of a process. I'm a "techie-tard," i guess. also, i'd like to suggest a new "sub-forum" in "distribution" forum, Called "General Distro."
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy K3B doesn't seem to recognise a blank CD in the drive tray.
I'm on OS 11.2, K3B & codecs from 11.2 packman, and 11.2 KDE4 factory (ie kde4.4).
When I put a blank cd in, the kde4 device notifier shows me a blank cd and offers to create a project with k3b. I create a data project & click burn, the burn dialog has a greyed out Burn button, and the media selector dropdown says please insert an empty or appendable medium.
If I eject & re-insert the disc at this point, the device notifier again tells me I've inserted a blank cd, k3b's dialog freezes for a second (seems to notice something has happened) but still does not list my cd and remains as it was before.
k3bsetup reports no problems. Burning from commandline (cdrecord) works fine. Dolphin also knows about the blank cd. I've burned to these discs before with no problems (K3B used to work quite recently, perhaps 4 or 5 weeks ago). Updates have been applied in the meantime.
Last night I booted up and got the black screen, and it would not boot. Can't find your /etc/home/fstab file or something along those lines I did not write it down. I got out my thumb drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10, when I got to the partition phase I did a manual install and instructed Ubuntu to load onto /dev/sda1 /. I had previously partitioned this 160Gb drive with 41 Gb for root and 113 for my /home files and left 6.2 for Swap. Now it sees my second partition as 119 /dev/sda2 extended and Unrecognized. Unfortunately all my files are on that partition and I can't figure out how to tell Ubuntu to configure that partition as my /home . I really do not want to re-install and wipe that partition. Can gparted fix this dilemma? I thought I was being so good by creating a boot partition so that I could upgrade in the future without affecting the rest of my files.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an acer aspireone aod250, i putted an external cdrom and downloaded the ubuntu, tried to install it but it didn't recognize the hdd... i though it was the cd, i downloaded ubuntu netbook edition, it did the same. i thought maybe i could try another operative, i downloaded linux mint 9, did the same thing. then ordered a cd from ubuntu.com, got in today, and it doesn't recognize my hdd. btw, the hdd is a seagate momentus 5400.6 with 160gb. i already ran ubuntu with the cd rom and starts the instalation, but when it arrives to the partitioning part of the instalation, it doesn't detect my hdd. but the bios in the pc detects it.

Anyway, I have created the empty .is_audio_player file but still the player does not show up in RB. I can access the player just fine through Nautilus, and syncing it actually worked for a while, but now for some reason it has stopped.

However, just recently, at random times for about 5 seconds I can't use my mouse or keyboard.When it does that, the computer isn't frozen, I just can't type.About 5 seconds later, all the text that I was trying to type suddenly appears. I have 4GB or RAM, and even when I barely have any programs running and at 0% of resource usage, the problem still persists. This has just been happening for the past day or so.

When I tried to open it from the email using the default gedit I got an error message - Could not open the file /tmp/Feb.txt gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again.The character encoding is set to 'automatically detected'.
How come it can't detect the encoding? I had to manually set the encoding to Western(ISO 8599-15) to load it. I can't remember this happening in the past, and it was OK loading one I sent earlier (Jan.txt) which presumably had the same encoding, as it was written in the same way.
I recently upgraded from karmic to lucid. I am currently having a problem trying to get ubuntu to recognize my LG slim External DVD drive. It was recognized fine in Karmic, but for some reason doesnt work now in Lucid. The device does work as i have tried it on other computers.

1. Downloaded the Mac4lin package.
2. Extracted folder in my downloads.
3. Went to System > Preferences > Appearance.
4. Clicked install.
5. Installed Downloads > Mac4Lin_Install_v1.0 > Mac4Lin_Install_v1.0 >b GTK > Mac4Lin_Meta_v1.0.tar.gz.
However, when I do this, it doesn't recognize it, as you can see in the picture. Did I do something wrong when installing it?
I installed windows 7 after I installed linux. I got grub reinstalled but windows doesnt show up in the grup menu. So I run in linux sudo update-grub, but this doesnt find my windows system.

I have an RCA Opal, 4GB player. I am having some problems transferring music to it. I first try the player in MSC mode and just drag and drop the files I want to listen to into the Opal's Music directory. That works fine, but over half of the songs I transfer over end up in the "Unknown Album" file. I have checked the ID3 Tags for these songs and they are intact. Next I have put the player into MTP mode to try to transfer things with Rhythmbox, but Rhythmbox doesn't show the player in the sidepanel.
EDIT 1: It may be worth noting that mtp-detect in Terminal returns the message "No Raw Devices Found"

I am exploring Ubuntu 8.10 on my Asus netbook without yet installing it. While using Ubuntu I cannot get it to recognize any wireless networks.Is this because I am only exploring Ubuntu and it has not yet been installed? I've got a wireless router with a WEP security, when I choose my connection and put in the key it just tries for some time and then ask me again for the WEP key. And it goes like this on and on and on, I've tried to connect at some firends gome with the same kind of connection and it doesn't work either.
I think that in an older version I did connect to an unprotected connection but I cannot take out the protection because it is my roomsmate wifi.
This is a new installation.My system login password is recognized and that same passwd is recognized by the Software Centre, but not with sudo in the terminal.

I have a sandisk sd card with 3 partitions two ext2 and one fat 32 partition for some reson Ubuntu only automounts two ext2 partitions. I've tried inserting another card with only one fat32 partition and the system doesn't mount it. Both cards are visible in gparted byt not in "Places" menu.

I'll try to post as much information as I can, and then will supply whatever else is inevitably left out and deemed necessary. I'm running 10.10 on a Gateway MX3701 laptop which has an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics controller (lspci | grep VGA) and am hooking it up to my Samsung P2770HD monitor/TV via VGA (VGA-0 port if that's important).
So, the issue: In resurrecting my old laptop by killing XP and putting on Ubuntu, I found I needed a VGA cable to connect to my monitor. Borrowed a friend's to get my setup going, and all was well in 1920x1080 with all the other monitor settings working well too (laptop monitor off, etc.. When my new VGA cable (cheap from Amazon) arrived and I shutdown, made new connection, and rebooted, my monitor was no longer recognized (it was before) and I am limited to weak sauce resolutions meant for my blinding grandmother.
So I've tried to find similar issues on here and have struggled to do so. I did find one thread that was similar, but the issue was never resolved.
I'm running Joli Cloud 1.2 on my HP dm1z netbook and for some reason, it doesn't seem to recognize my wireless card. Because the HP dm1z has no ethernet port, I had to use a USB adapter to connect to the internet.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using SeaMonkey instead of FireFox, and this won't change. SeaMonkey is set to be the default browser in Preferred Applications I use a java chat client every day (.jar), which has a button that opens an appropriate web address.
The problem is, it opens that site with FireFox instead of my desired SeaMonkey.
The client runs fine with openjdk and sunjava too ( I have both installed ), but they both open sites with FireFox. In Sun Java 6 Plugin Control Panel I set the SeaMonkey launcher as "Command to launch default browser", but the client still opens sites with FireFox. As for OpenJDK, I haven't found any way to modify settings.
I've been trying to install 11.04 on my 2009 Macbook Pro, but I can't complete the installation because Ubuntu doesn't recognize my wireless connection.
