Ubuntu :: New VGA Cable Doesn't Recognize Monitor - Low Resolutions?
Jan 24, 2011
first time poster after having read gobs of threads trying to find the answer to my issue here. I'll try to post as much information as I can, and then will supply whatever else is inevitably left out and deemed necessary. I'm running 10.10 on a Gateway MX3701 laptop which has an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics controller (lspci | grep VGA) and am hooking it up to my Samsung P2770HD monitor/TV via VGA (VGA-0 port if that's important).
So, the issue: In resurrecting my old laptop by killing XP and putting on Ubuntu, I found I needed a VGA cable to connect to my monitor. Borrowed a friend's to get my setup going, and all was well in 1920x1080 with all the other monitor settings working well too (laptop monitor off, etc.. When my new VGA cable (cheap from Amazon) arrived and I shutdown, made new connection, and rebooted, my monitor was no longer recognized (it was before) and I am limited to weak sauce resolutions meant for my blinding grandmother.
So I've tried to find similar issues on here and have struggled to do so. I did find one thread that was similar, but the issue was never resolved.

I have two monitors of different resolutions. Under settings->display the settings for my monitor look like this: [URL]. Ultimately what I want is to set up this kind of configuration: [URL]. But whenever I do, it doesn't work out. When I up after setting the above settings, my configuration ends up like this: [URL]. Any attempt to change the resolution or to change the display type to anything other then clone is simply ignored. If I disable the second monitor I can set my first to the proper resolution. If I try to set the settings to what I want they will stick but the second monitor doesn't actually turn on, and if i try to drag windows that direction it acts like a single display.
I have tried using the ATI control panel to adjust my display, but there seems to be a problem entering it as an administrator.I can load the CCC just fine as a regular user, but when I try as an admin a terminal pops up, I type in my password, and nothing happens. I want to avoid trying to reinstall my display drivers or do anything drastic. In previous versions of linux I would just nano the Xorg.conf file and be done with it, but it seems ubuntu 10.04 LTS doesn't use Xorg, or at least not a Xorg.conf I am used to. I want to set the monitors at their native res and as independent displays, similar to what twin view did for me not to long ago.

I just installed Natty (11.04) on an old computer for my disabled brother with:
* Video Card:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
* Monitor:
VGA Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 750SB (old CRT monitor)
The problem is that when I select System -> Preferences -> Monitors, the monitor is shown as unknown and it only allows me to set 1280x1024 (shows 0Hz as display refresh rate) which is way too high for my brother. I was wondering if there's a way to select the proper monitor from a list so all display resolutions are shown and I can select a lower one for him.

I am somewhat new to CentOS, but I have read a lot of web pages and tried a good number of things trying to solve my own problem. I have made it worse a few times, but never better. I have an envision 1440x900 LCD monitor and a S3 Savage video chip on the motherboard. In System->Administration->Display->Hardware I am using generic LCD Panel 1440x900 and the video card is listed as "S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage KM266/KL266]. I believe both of these to be correct. I have added the mode to my xorg.conf
The problem is, under System->Preferences->Screen Resolution, the mode 1440x900 does not appear. The highest resolution is 1280x768. Does the S3 Savage just not have the ability to produce 1440x900?

I recently got a new external monitor for my laptop, and connected them by VGA. This is what 'xrandr' tells me:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 4096 x 4096
LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
1280x800 60.0 +
1024x768 60.0
800x600 60.3 56.2
640x480 59.9
VGA1 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 290mm
1920x1080 60.0 +
1600x1200 60.0
1680x1050 60.0
1280x1024 75.0 60.0
1440x900 75.0 59.9*
1280x960 60.0
1280x800 59.8
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0
720x400 70.1
However when I try to change to some of the higher resolutions, such as 1920x1080, all I get is a corrupted and flickering image. As indicated above, I am currently on 1440x900@59.9h,z but for some reason 1440x900@75hz doesn't work. The same seems to be true for 1280x1024. The three resolutions above that all cannot be selected properly. I tried setting the resolution to maximum in Windows XP and it worked, and my video games console can set it to 1080p, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the monitor. Is there anything I can do or is this some kind of bug or limitation of the graphics driver or something? The graphics chipset of the laptop is an Intel 945GM, which I believe should be capable of displaying 1920x1080. I am running debian unstable with what seems to be the most up to date version of xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Today I bought a new monitor (IPS236V) to use it to watch movies and tv while I'm working on the other one.. I thought it's the best to activate Xinerama which could be done easy via CCC. But I'm not able to change the resolutions now as these panels are disabled in CCC. The first monitor is set to its native resolution, but the second is something lower. How can I configure both monitors to there native resolution?

I have been tasked to set up 2 monitors on SUSE Linux Enterprise that are a clone of each other, but each displaying different resolutions. The primary display has a max resolution of 1024x768 while the secondary display has a max resolution of 800x600.
The problem comes when the secondary display shows a "cropped" version of the desktop. Is there anyway to show different resolutions on each display while maintaining the proper desktop look?

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this topic (I was struggling between hardware and software). But since I do not think this was a problem with my hardware(monitor), I decided to post it here.

I just installed 11.3 in one of my computers and I've noticed the resolution was sometimes changing after a reboot. First it was switching from 1280x1025 to 1024x768 with the default deivers, then I thought installing Nvidia propietary drivers would solve the problem, but now is switching between 1280x1024 and 640x480. After several attemps to fix it I found out that the system uses the correct resolution if it starts with the monitor switched on, but falls back to 640x480 if it's off when the system boots, which is almost always since I usually control this pc trough vnc.
I Tryed to specify the available resolutions in xorg.conf, and adding the preferred mode option, but it didn't help. I tryed also to use xrand in .profile to force 1280 resolution, but it doesn't work either (when the system is started with monitor off, xrand only shows 640x480 and 320x240 as available resolutions, and so does the system preferences panel).
Here's the xorg.conf I'm using right now:
Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 256.35 (buildmeister@builder101) Wed Jun 16 19:25:59 PDT 2010

I am running 11.04 on a new Gateway with 8 gigs of ram. It is a solo installation. The monitor is connected via an HDMI cable. Everything was great (installation running smoothly for over a month) until last night. I just installed a netgear router and was setting it up with the system to try to get Stanza on my IPAD to connect to Calibre. Anyway, i suffered a severe freeze up warranting a hard boot. I could see the drive working, ancillary drives lit up, keyboard lit up so I know the system is working. The monitor did not come on, It shows a yellow light indication no signal. It is a 28" Hansspree. I tested the monitor by hooking it to a laptop. The monitor is fine. I cannot see anything on the screen so I can't boot to repair mode or use a CD. There is no signal.

I am attempting to get a Dual Monitor Display using aticonfig (and/or manual editing my xorg.conf file). My graphics card (a Radeon HD 4350 with latest ati drivers ) has only a single output but I am using a splitter cable to connect it to two monitors.
I am want one monitor to be 1600x1200 and the second monitor to be 800x600.
This is the command I had tried to no avail.
aticonfig -fq --initial --dtop=horizontal,reverse --resolution=0,1600x1200,1280x1024,1024x768 --mode2=800x600
What am I missing? Should I be using this configuration utility? Or should I be trying to manual edit my xorg.config? All the information I have been able to find seems specific to Dual Head Displays.
EDIT: It occurs to me to post my edited xorg.conf file

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.
Here is my current xorg.conf.
Code:

Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

I've recently bought a recycled computer for my office. The plan was to get an old cheap computer and use it to write LaTex documents but nothing else. However, I can't seem to get the thing to connect to the internet. I'm on a University network which has a funny setup but I don't think that's the problem. So here's the deal. I have tried this with 9.04, 10.04 and 10.10 and it hasn't worked. The computer recognizes the ethernet cable. If I issue the command "sudo mii-tool eth0" and get back "eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok". However, click on the networking logo on the top right, and click auto eth0, it tries to connect for about 30 seconds, then gives up. Unfortunately I'm pretty clueless when it comes to networking so I have no idea what to do to try to fix this.

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive
That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

Ok so I just installed Debian 7.5 on my laptop and encountered several problems.
First off was the problem with GNOME 3, GNOME 3 failed to load.
Second problem was that the system does not recognize an external monitor via hdmi. Via VGA I do not know do not have a cable to try it out.
Third problem was that my wireless was no recognized.
Dell Inspiron 5537 Laptop
wireless: Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Graphics card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) from the 4xxx series
System: 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.57-3+deb7u2 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Before I had Fedora, but only cuz all the devices were recognized by default, for a while now I wanted to switch over to Debian but as I came to relize my hardware for some reason is not working.

I am using this usb wifi adapter, it uses zd1211rw and it works fine if I connect it directly to the usb port, but if I add a cable (around 5mts) between the usb port and the usb plug, the device doesn't appear (I used iwconfig to check). The green light on the wifi adapter turns on but it doesn't blink like it does when connecting it directly without the cable. What could be happening?
I use the same cable + usb wifi adapter in windows, and it works fine, I can scan and connect without problems. When I use the cable, lsusb doesn't show the device neither, it does when connecting the adapter directly.

No media player recognizes my Philips MP3 Player as such, I've put all my hopes into Rhythmbox, it seems to be the most likely one to work. Anyway, I have created the empty .is_audio_player file but still the player does not show up in RB. I can access the player just fine through Nautilus, and syncing it actually worked for a while, but now for some reason it has stopped.

I have an Ubuntu 10.04 installation that I have been using for about a month. However, just recently, at random times for about 5 seconds I can't use my mouse or keyboard. When it does that, the computer isn't frozen, I just can't type.About 5 seconds later, all the text that I was trying to type suddenly appears. I have 4GB or RAM, and even when I barely have any programs running and at 0% of resource usage, the problem still persists. This has just been happening for the past day or so.

I typed in a text file (Feb.txt) at work using the basic Microsoft Notepad text editor and emailed it home. When I tried to open it from the email using the default gedit I got an error message - Could not open the file /tmp/Feb.txt gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again. The character encoding is set to 'automatically detected'.
How come it can't detect the encoding? I had to manually set the encoding to Western(ISO 8599-15) to load it. I can't remember this happening in the past, and it was OK loading one I sent earlier (Jan.txt) which presumably had the same encoding, as it was written in the same way.
