Ubuntu :: Installs Correctly On A New 10.04 Install But Now Machine Cannot Boot?
Apr 22, 2010
Just received Intramfs update, within the hour (4/22/10 11:47 central) , installs correctly on a new 10.04 install but now machine cannot bootIt is somehow resetting the video it appears as the boot screen comes up in different (larger) type. then blanks and all activity stops,, I have been having similar problems if I apply all updates after an initial install of 10.04 but if I hold the opne gl modules the system will work but a backup taken with Remastersys made after the open GL installs will not work while the one made prior to the open GL install will restore the system so I'm guessing some sort of erroneous HW reset sequence

I upgraded my 9.10 Ubuntu install last night using the Update Manager, everything downloaded fine, and appeared to install correctly. When it finished I got the message advising that my machine needed to reboot for changes to take effect. I checked my mail quickly before rebooting, and then let it do its thing. It shut down fine, then booted up and went into MemTest86. No real worries, so I wandered off expecting it to take 10-20 minutes. After 4 hours, though, I was starting to worry. A message at the bottom of the screen advised something along the lines that the test had been successful, and I could press Escape to exit.
I did, and my machine rebooted, and went back into MemTest86. I just figured I was being too impatient and left the test running all night. My machine has now been running MemTest86 for 16 hours, and while the timer is still running and the tests refreshing, my keyboard is not responding.

I'm trying to install the Unix version of Rapidshare manager on an Ubuntu VPS I have .. The installation script is this: [URL]... I have two Ubuntu VPS machines .. On the first one, after chmod'ing the program installs fine, however on this other VPS, after chmod'ing and running the script I get this error:
Code:
Starting Installer .
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Could not deteremine disk space: Cannot run program "df": java.io.IOException: error=12, Cannot allocate memory The the installer's GUI comes up, I go through the program, and although it says that its installed, its really not Also, 'df' command runs fine on this Ubuntu VPS, and shows tons of available disk space, so I don't know what's the problem

I have a few machines set up to run off in the corner without monitors attached. I installed 11.3 (32-bit) on a couple of them and they run fine during setup but then I move them to the corner with no monitor attached and they won't boot correctly.
By this I mean they still run some apps I setup to run automatically from daemon scripts, but I can't ping or access the machines at all. It's almost like they aren't booting all the way up. Hooking a monitor up fixes this but I don't have enough monitors to keep these hooked up like this.
I have a couple of other 11.3 systems that are setup almost the same way but I put graphics drivers on those and they work with or without monitors attached. I don't want to have to put graphics drivers on those systems.

The devices tab under ubuntu one preferences lists only <LOCAL MACHINE> the staus at the top says disconnected, the connect button is grayed out and the reset button at the bottom right does nothing. Files don't sync etc but I think this is as a result of the situation described above. I have tried on the advice of an older thread to delete the token for Ubuntu one from 'passwords and encryption keys' and then revisit Ubuntu one preferences in order to sign in again and grant my computer access but this made no difference.

Distribution = Oracle Unbreakable Linux 5.4 x86_64Machine = HP DL180 2U ServerModifications = LSI SAS/SATA PCIExpress CardSo I plop 5.4 on this box, and install goes great, but then when I try to reboot the machine ('install is complete, click to reboot'), it won't go... post completes, fibre card and sas card get done with their posts, and then it just craps out when you'd expect it to start loading the OS.So I thought the card was bad... stuck the horrendous HP Storageworks PCIExpress SAS card back into it and had the same behavior, good install, but boot failure.
Bios is set to defer to the PCI card for boot priority -- first bios boot device is the DVD drive, then it defers to the card. With the LSI, I had chosen physical drive 0 (1st one) to boot. With the HP Storageworks, you can't boot physical drives, so I just made a logical drive from one physical drive and went that route... same behavior

Recently I have built an old pc using bits and bobs that have been collecting in the garage for years and decided to try and turn it into a file server, and to get some experience in networking etc. Now I had a choice of 2 motherboards for the system:
1.)gigabyte ga-8siml
2.)elitegroup l7s7a2
I first built the pc using the gigabyte board, install was successful and ubuntu server booted on restart. The only problem was, there is no onboard lan on the board and the only spare wireless pci card I found was completely frazzled. Rather than buying a new wifi card to get the system running, I thought I would try the other motherboard since this had onboard lan. The elitegroup motherboard however does not have onboard vga, so I dug out an old agp ati radeon 9200se 128m ddr tvo graphics card and plugged her in. The install went fine, but after a restart, I'm left with a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.
If I hold down 'shift' for long enough I can bring up the grub menu, but if I select anything I get no signal on the monitor. After a while on the blinking cursor screen the monitor will time out to no signal on its own. I have tried the installation using different combinations of the options given by F6 of the first installation screen but to no avail. I have also tried installing the generic kernel as opposed to the generic-pae.

coming from the Windows world recently decided to give Linux a try and with it, she decided to go with KUbuntu. I had her go at it under VMWare so she could have something to fall back on while learning Linux. Problem is after installing KUbuntu we can no longer get back into it as the system locks up while it is trying to boot. All that is seen on the screen is the KUbuntu bootup logo screen and it stays there.

I am having a problem getting F10 to boot after install.I downloaded the DVD, burned it and installed from it. No errors during the installation but when I go to reboot the system comes up saying:"VolGroup00 not foundUnable to access resume device (/dev/volgroup00/logvol01)Mount: error mounting /dev/root/ on /sysroot as ext3:h file or directory"This is being installed into an AMD Opteron Blade with an Adaptec SC2000 controller card, 4 SCSI disks configured in a RAID 5 array.I gather it's looking at the wrong device for a boot track/loader, but not sure how to fix thisAny ideas? I figured if it found it during install it should find it during boot but that doesn't seem to be the case

I haven't used Linux/Ubuntu before but I feel the time has come!
My parents Windows XP Dell machine won't boot (says it's corrupt, stops itself before windows loads). It's been dragged down by virus/malmare lately and is fairly sick.
I'm no Windows expert and can't seem to fix it, but I thought if I install Ubuntu for them they'd be alright, get them away from Windows for good.but can anyone tell me in very simple terms the procedure I need to go through to install Ubuntu.
I can download Ubuntu now on my machine and burn it onto a CD or put it on a USB stick.
I'm especially keen to know how to ensure I retrieve all their data (mostly photos...they do have back up system but I've no guarantee it's actually be working lately).

I made a post in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10753227 but I guess it's closed.I'm having the same issue. I've installed Kubuntu 11.04 32bit twice now. Both times it doesn't do anything when it reboots. No output to the screen. When I boot to the LiveCD and chroot or simply mount the /dev/sda device and run sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdaIt says grub installs successfully, but it doesn't fix the problem.

I cleverly built a machine with two drives mirrored, boot partition on the mirror. It crashed some time when I was not present, and was apparently writing to disk at the time, for since, it will not boot. I get error messages to the effect that there is no boot partition. At this point I am not particularly concerned to try to rebuild this array, though I have read a hell of a lot on the boards about trying that (and am daunted - everyone assumes you can boot the machine with the bad array). Instead, I am wondering is it possible to build a simple machine on a third disk, then "look" at the disks in the former (?) array, and/or potentially rebuild it?

In the end, I am trying to dual boot my MacBook Pro with Fedora 14 and OSX. I am having issues getting the bootloader working for Fedora though. I have setup my partition table like this:
/sda1 - EFI
/sda2 - OSX
/sda3 - /boot
/sda4 - LVM (root, home, swap)
Fedora installs fine, and the bootloader installs to sda3. I use rEFIt to allow me to boot to my Linux partition, but when I do I get "no bootable device". I have done a little reading and have found people have problems doing with this with GRUB (default Fedora bootloader). So what I would like to do is try installing LILO or maybe even GRUB2. how to change the bootloader Fedora installs from the Live CD?

I have a server that NFS exports the /home directory out to other computers. On the desktop they all work great, but on a wireless laptop, this is where the problem occurs. The wireless enables after the person logs in, rendering the NFS export /home useless on the laptops. Is there anyway to have the wireless enable correctly on the boot so that NFS can mount properly at boot also?I'm using Fedora 11 (32bit) with a wireless router that has a security of WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]. I could switch to some of the older versions if necessary to get this working.

As per the thread title, tried both 32 and 64-bit isos, also re-downloaded the isos in case of a problem with them
Fails to enter runlevel 5 (and start kdm), I've tried the usual nomodeset, setting no_kms_in_initrd isn't much help as mkinitrd fails after setting it
Here's the gist of the errormsgs:
Code:
(==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist" (0)
(II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported
(EE) RADEON(0): Chipset: "AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series" (ChipID = 0x6738) requires kms Some things I've tried:
Blacklisting fglrx doesn't work with vi as it tells me 50-blacklist.conf is read-only even when I use the ! override read-only switch
Tried specifying both the radeon and radeonhd and even vesa drivers in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf when trying off a usb pen drive created with imagewriter
As mentioned earlier. tried nomodeset and no_kms_in_initrd to yes
It's a pain as I have tumbleweed on the machine and prior to putting the radeon card in it I would use a live usb drive to backup the system prior to updating, when I had an nividia card in the machine live usb and live cd would both boot no problem so it pretty much has to be something about the way it's handling the radeon card (like trying to load the non-existent fglrx driver regardless of what I do to try stopping that maybe?)
Don't know what else to try though and if I can't get it booting off a live opensuse I can see myself putting another os on it somewhere just for backing up the system before any updates

After logging into a fresh Debian 5.0 (lenny) install from a VPS (virtual private server) provider, I run 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get upgrade' in attempt to get all the security updates, assuming that's what said commands do. Along the way exim (exim4) and possibly other programs (not confirmed) gets installed and is setup to run on bootup...despite it not being installed previously. Why is this? I would expect that either 1) previously uninstalled pkgs are not installed with the 'upgrade," or 2) if 'upgrade' essentially performing a "install everything that's not already installed" maneuver, I wonder why it's not installing a LOT more packages (then just the view I see installed on my system during the 'upgrade.')
Separately: can someone confirm an 'apt-get update' followed by apt-get upgrade' on a fresh Debian 5.0 install system will basically upgrade to 5.0.8 ("current rev level" for lenny)?

I recently finished a mini-itx machine and everything was working great with a fresh Jessie install. I put in a PCIe wifi card and now the computer won't boot. The power LED is on, the PSU fan is spinning, but I get no display output at all and I don't know how far into the boot process the thing even got. I removed the card and the machine boots fine again.
I only have one PCIe slot so it is my only option, I don't have another PCIe card to try, nor do I have another machine to test the wifi card in. The card is brand new, for what it's worth.
