Ubuntu :: KDM And GDM Battle At Startup - Both Launch X Servers - Remove Duplication?
Apr 28, 2010
I have both ubuntu and kde-desktop installed, and after trying KDM, switched back to GDM which worked fine for a while (although KDE changed my other gnome settings like usplash and cursors which took a while to change back). A day later, though, when I start up my system, the screen flickers a few times then shows me a message that an x-server is already running, so hit no to try loading it on '0' again or yes to try another number.
If I hit no, it will briefly show me the KDE login screen refresh a few times and go back to the menu. If I hit yes, it refreshes about 7 times and finally shows the gnome login screen. This process takes a long time and I'm not sure is great for my screen.

I spent most of the day yesterday trying to make this work and haven't gotten really anywhere with it. Building from source quietly failed although it built without error and I got checkinstall to pack it up it didn't actually work.So I rolled back to the repository version of rtorrent.As I understand it, the things I need to do are (I am thwarted at every step):create user with --disabled-password optioncreating the user is no problem except they seem to have no shell, and running any command while su'd as that user throws an error like Code: Cannot open your terminal '/dev/pts/1' - please check.
I found somewhere that changing the permissions on /dev/pts/N solves this problem however N can change after a reboot, or probably following other events so that's likely not the right fix.create init script to run rtorrent as user in previous stepI found an example that seems like it works but I wont know for sure until I get the prior step worked out fully.

I have downloaded Ubuntu within windows 7, with wubi. It shows itself as Ubuntu 10.10, though I had selected 11.04, not to worry, this is for information only. I downloaded Q Cad, a drawing programme from the Ubuntu software centre and it shows in the list but I do not know how to launch it.I will have to down load some more applications and I think I will run into this wall again. I can enter CLI through Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F7 and probably do nothing more.

How can I turn off specific authentications? I don't want to have to authenticate every time I mount a different drive (in a different partition). (Because I can't open Mozilla, since it pulls a profile from that partition, without authenticating; and I want to have Mozilla automatically launch on startup, but it can't launch if I need to type my password to gain access to the drive first!).

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 in a computer with a 7200rpm HD, 8Gb Ram, and a Core i7, and the time it takes to load the desktop is insane. There are threads that mention the problem of gnome looking for nonexistent floppy drives and to solve the problem by disabling that in the BIOS (option I don't have). Anyway, besides that problem, by running at startup a gnome-terminal with the iotop command, I noticed that two processes have a huge i/o load on the system: google desktop and ubuntu one. I would like those programs to run as part of the startup process, but be launched after several seconds (to allow the rest of the programs to load). Is there any way I can achieve this? I think there should be a way modifying the commands under startup application, but I cannot find anything that works.

Fresh Squeeze install: I have AWN running and right now I have used gconf-editor to stop gnome-panel from being a part of the Gnome Sessions. I think it was in Desktop -> Sessions -> Default Settings..or something like that. Before I did this I was just clearing out the entries for the top panel, using Apps -> Panel -> and then it was top_panel or something like that. I'm at work so I cannot fully verify, after I deleted the bottom panel. This still allowed me to use ALT + F2 to bring up the run prompt.
Since removing gnome-panel from the session, I cannot use ALT + F2 anymore. If I were to put gnome-panel back, is there a way to keep the panels from recreating themselves after I remove them from within gconf-editor? If I leave gnome-session alone, whenever I reboot the top panel keeps coming back. I have everything I want running out of the AWN dock, so I want to remove the panels completely but still have the ability to launch the run prompt.

this is my first post here .I have two issues related to grub2 I upgraded recently from ubuntu 8 to 10.04 and upgraded grub 0.98 to 1.98. 1-How to prevent Grub from detecting one of Windows installations? or how does grub detect Windows. I have 2 hdds, they were backup of each other. but no more, I deleted one Windows by deleting most of the files so therefore I don't need it to be present in Grub 2 menu. How do I delete this? any suggestion? 2-For some reason grub2 only work correctly from sdb , even though I chose to install grub2 to sda too, but it seems grub is trying to find grub files on the same hard disk instead of on sdb, therefore it goes into grub rescue mode with error "file not found" . I set my computer to boot from sdb for now. but I would like to learn how to make sda's grub work. before it used to work with grub 0.98.

I am a player of Battle for Wesnoth, one of the best Ubuntu games. I have been running Wesnoth 1.6.5 (stable) on Ubuntu 9.10. But many a times, sound stops, and Wesnoth needs to be closed from System Monitor by killing processes, or using "killall -ser username" Command from Console. So, in Wesnoth Channel, they told that it is a problem of ALSA.

If I press the space button a lot of times (lol) or click a lot (lol), I can get to the Diablo's menu, but I can't click in anything at all, it's just there, jammed.

My problem is that I can' t launch my PHP files in Firefox to see them local.
I have Apache, PHP and MySQL installed.
I also moved my web folder to /var/www but still can't see them.
I can see the default html file: "It works!" but not my files.
Firefox is still asking what it should do with the file, if it should open or save it. But I can't see them.

i've checked the link, and it makes it better. but it doesn't include all the information. i'll continue searching the internet. However i have seen an example of creating a fd:
Code:
exec 5<&1
echo "TEST" >&5
exec 5>&-
as in the page, this was intended to redirect the stdout to the fd 5 and create it, and close it. i have the following questions:- what is exactly the meaning of second command? is it to redirect the command stdout "test" to the fd 5? and how i can see the contents of the fd 5? - in the first command, why the < is used instead if > and what is the difference between the below two commands as in the info bash *Redirection section It will be helpful if anyone could include a graph for file descriptor before and after different command execution.

Karmic - When I start up and log in, a window for KDE Desktop Sharing Invitation automatically pops up.
Closing it doesn't prevent it from popping up on next startup.
There doesn't appear to be any option to "Don't show on startup."
When I go to System -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Autostart, it does not appear under Desktop File. The only thing that appears under "Script File" is gtk-2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh gtk2engines... which does not appear to be the issue.
I'm guessing there's a shell command that will give me a more in-depth look at what should and should not run upon startup? Would really like to startup with a clean screen!

I have installed mysql server on my Ubuntu Lucid AMD64 desktop. I need to run this service only on need. So I prefer not to have this in startup. So I did the following -
1. Deactivated the row entry by name "mysql" from application BootUp-Manager.
2. Run the application sysv-rc-conf and unchecked the checkboxes for all run levels.
3. Run the command "sudo update-rc.d -f mysql remove". Execution completed successfully.
4. Run the command - "sudo service mysql stop". In return I got a message "mysql stop/waiting".
5. Restarted the desktop.
Now when I read through the task manager, I still see a process by name "mysqld" running. I ran the command as mentioned in # 4 above and got the same response. I wanted to know how do I turn off mysql service running from startup permanently. But I still need to run it as and when required.

I am running Unbuntu 10.10 on a HTPC, and also XBMC. With some effort it worked ok, sounds, remote etc. Via systems>preferences I managed to add XBMC to the startup. It now starts when I start the PC. However it sort-of hijacks the PC, so the WiFi does not start among other things. Also I am no longer able to log into the desktop, so I am not able to emove XBMC from the start-up of the computer. If I exit XBMC I get to the log-in screen for the desktop, but when I log in it starts XBMC directly.
How can I remove it via the terminal? I cannot find a .config directory, any autostart, any .xsession, .xinitrc or anything else that looks like startup-script. How can I get access to my desktop again?

This problem has been confirmed on the Google Code issues page for this program on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: [url]

I got a folder containing 20,0000 files (and will be more later), each of this file contains a single URL. What I am trying to do is to do statistics on number of duplicated URLs (file with same content) accumulated, say, from September to October by each day. For example, if file A was created in Sep 1st has a same content with file B created in Sep 15th, then we add 1 to number of duplication on Sep 15th (not Sep 1st). Currently I got a way to do it (in perl) as below:
(1) Read all files inside the folder, print out file content, and modified time into a big file in the format:
Code:
[URL] [month] [day]
(2) Sort the file by month then by day
(3) Then Create two hash : date and content
And then read url from each line into a hash 'content' from the big file (key is url, value left undef), for each new read url found in hash 'content', a duplication is detected, so mark '$date{$month.$day}++' The algorithm could be working but may take too long... so I am wondering if there is some easier way to do that besides hashes.

We're trying to take an existing system running multipathed SAN boot disks, duplicate that boot disk to another system volume, and boot a second system up with all the same parts running like the first system (think: cloning the system).However, multipathing is broke on the second system 'm sure I'm forgetting something stupid here after thecloning).Details:We have a freshly installed RHEL6 on IBM PPCThis is a boot off of a SAN volume with two paths. Installation went great - multipathing was auto-detected and used underneath the usual LVMs for the boot volumes. Looks and works great:
Code:
[root@goldimage dev]# df -k
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on

I'm beginning to write a custom RTP implementation and want to test its resilience to UDP traffic. I've searched on the web and all the links I can find are for analysing actual traffic, not generating it or messing it up.
Does anyone know of any software (preferably free software) that will, for example, take actual UDP traffic and drop packets, duplicate some and make some arrive late/out of sequence?

I have dual boot Windows 7 Pro and Fedora Core 13 (Round 1)If I change the time on Windows it bumps my Fedora time backwards 6 hours (Round 2)if i change the time on Fedora it knocks my Windows time forward 6 hours
This is only a two round bout, the judges are picking the winner. What do you all think? The obvious solution is just change the time zone in one of the systems to compensate. I was just looking for other ideas.

I'm unable to change startup programs. If I try and add or remove a program, any changes I have made seem to undo themselves. I suspect it might have something to do with being unable to save the session, but I really don't have a clue.
Just in case it makes a difference: I'm actually running Mint (Helena).

Code:

sleep 1 &
wait
[[ $(top -n1 | grep transmission) == *transmission* ]] &&
[[ $(date +%H) -ge 5 ]] && [[ $(date +%H) -lt 23 ]] && /etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stop done
}
TRANSMISSION_TIMING &

[[ $(date +%H) -ge 5 ]] && [[ $(date +%H) -lt 23 ]] && /etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stop

Nothing I do can keep this thing from launching, and apparently kill it either.

I've confirmed this by browsing to http://127.0.0.1 , and by doing px ax | grep apache

Now I'd like to know how to stop this apache, remove from startup, and uninstall safely so I use xampp's apache instead.

How do I remove that annoying drum sound from the login screen.I went to PREFERENCES -> LOGIN SCREEN, but there are no tabs or boxes for sound. Only options to determine who I want to log in.I tried GCONF-EDITOR, and drilled down to /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/settings-manager-plugins/sound/active and unchecked the active box, rebooted, but it still plays that stupid sound. And the box is unchecked if I check it! I've tried the solutions in the forum and nothing seems to kill that annoying sound.I'm still on 9.10 right now, since 10.04 has a nasty screen flicker problem.
