Aug 12, 2010I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone.When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

Aug 29, 2011I've just made the leap from Windows to Linux after years of flirting with the idea. I downloaded and installed Fedora 15 KDE 64 bit (I have tried it before and remember KDE was the windows manager I used previously, so chose that).
However, when trying to get Skype to launch, I receive the error message: KDEInit could not launch usr/bin/skype
Before settling on Fedora, I also tried Linux Mint, using GNOME. Since the error message seems to suggest KDE is the problem, would it be possible to switch to GNOME, without having to redownload and do a clean install? Or would this be the equivalent of using a sledge hammer to crack a nut?

May 27, 2011Wondering if any one else is having this problem lately under 11.4. My Skype does not want to launch any more. When I click to open Skype, the tray icon will pop up for 1 second and then just disappear. Have tried launching from command line to see if there are any messages, but it just says aborted when you try launch it.
I noticed this started happening randomly when I had the laptop in hibernate and then would resume, Skype would then just disappear and then I would just relaunch it and it would be find again.

May 26, 2011I have downloaded Ubuntu within windows 7, with wubi. It shows itself as Ubuntu 10.10, though I had selected 11.04, not to worry, this is for information only. I downloaded Q Cad, a drawing programme from the Ubuntu software centre and it shows in the list but I do not know how to launch it.I will have to down load some more applications and I think I will run into this wall again. I can enter CLI through Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F7 and probably do nothing more.

Jun 13, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 in a computer with a 7200rpm HD, 8Gb Ram, and a Core i7, and the time it takes to load the desktop is insane. There are threads that mention the problem of gnome looking for nonexistent floppy drives and to solve the problem by disabling that in the BIOS (option I don't have). Anyway, besides that problem, by running at startup a gnome-terminal with the iotop command, I noticed that two processes have a huge i/o load on the system: google desktop and ubuntu one. I would like those programs to run as part of the startup process, but be launched after several seconds (to allow the rest of the programs to load). Is there any way I can achieve this? I think there should be a way modifying the commands under startup application, but I cannot find anything that works.

Apr 28, 2010I have both ubuntu and kde-desktop installed, and after trying KDM, switched back to GDM which worked fine for a while (although KDE changed my other gnome settings like usplash and cursors which took a while to change back). A day later, though, when I start up my system, the screen flickers a few times then shows me a message that an x-server is already running, so hit no to try loading it on '0' again or yes to try another number.
If I hit no, it will briefly show me the KDE login screen refresh a few times and go back to the menu. If I hit yes, it refreshes about 7 times and finally shows the gnome login screen. This process takes a long time and I'm not sure is great for my screen.

Nov 5, 2010If I am using LXDE or another non-Gnome desktop and want to use Nautilus as the file viewer it needs to be launched with the --no-desktop option (so nautilus does not load it's desktop image under the other DE).
I know there is a way to make it so whenever nautilus is launched it will not load the desktop (even if you do not pass the --no-desktop argument) but I do not recall how I did this last time! I believe it was a gconf value. Anyone know what this setting is/how I can accomplish what I am looking to do?

I installed Skype from the slacky.it package HERE. Everything was fine, all was stable and rosey, until I installed Inkscape today. I hadn't even noticed it wasn't running until someone got a hold of me and said they were trying to get a hold of me. When I went to fire it up, thinking that I had somehow inadvertently closed it, it sprang right up for just a second and then was gone. Same thing - three times in row. So I tried starting if from the command line and got that error. I can start it from the comman line as root, with the following error:

General :: Make A Launch Command Set Focus To An Already Running App Instance In Ubuntu?
Feb 11, 2010I'm using a program called easystroke to invoke commands from mouse gestures - typically to launch an application. 'gnome-terminal', for example. If I already have a gnome-terminal window open, and I invoke the gnome-terminal gesture, I'd like to be setting focus to the already running instance, rather than spawn a new instance, which is of course what happens now. (I am actually more interested in this for my gmail chrome app shortcut, and other larger apps.)
I'm very new to ubuntu and linux in general, but I was hoping there might be a nifty command I could wrap around my launch command that would produce this behavior. (I'm imagining some kind of singleton app list keeper program that consumes my command line, checks if it's already in the list, transfers focus to the running process if it is (and if that process is still running), or else spawns a new process and then adds it to its list using the the command line as a key.)

May 8, 2011I put my skype chat on another workspace so I can focus on my school work and I have two windows on my first workspace so that i can alt tab easily but every time someone talks on skype it comes to my first work space and ruins my alt-tabbing comfort. How do I make it stay in its workspace and leave me alone? I rather something in the taskbar blink or if that's not possible, I just want no blinking at all. This is frustrating me since I need my laptop for my homework.

I'm using Alltray to dock Thunderbird to my panel next to the clock.I put this script in /etc/network/if-up.d because I want it to automatically launch Thunderbird in docked mode as soon as my computer connects to the Internet. I can manually run this script just fine, but the system will not launch AllTray
I already chmodded the file, so it has permission to be executed. But for some reason it will not launch. I know that the system is actually running the script because I had it echo "Hello World" to a text file on the desktop. But it won't run any programs.

That makes ubuntu very slow and I cant play video's on ubuntu because of the lack of video memory again, so is there anyway I could boot ubuntu from my desktop but instead of my windows vista and ubuntu running it will only be ubuntu running so It can get all the ram,video memory and that stuff? I need a answer quick because I have to be installing this program that takes up alot of ram on windows and I need to get to my work on open office on ubuntu!!!

I'm already starting X manually from /etc/event.d/tty7, but the X started from gdm is the one I see on the screen. I don't have a keyboard, so I can't switch to the console with the right X after startup. Is the only option to deinstall gdm, or is there a way to make it not start?
