Ubuntu Servers :: Flashpolicytwistd Does Not Launch After Upgrading To Server 10.04
May 28, 2010
I was running Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS and using flashpolicytwistd from Google Code to support flash-based telnet on two websites. After upgrading to 10.04 flashpolicytwistd no longer starts.
If I do the following to manually start flashpolicytwistd:
Code:
I get this response:
Code:
If I then immediately do the following:
Code:
I get this response:
Code:
I also cannot locate the process with ps -e, nor can I confirm that it is listening on its assigned port (default is 843, I changed it to 4005).
No errors show up in the logs. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no change.
This problem has been confirmed on the Google Code issues page for this program on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: [url]

i upgraded my sisters laptop from 10.04LTS to 10.10. I updated everything, prior to starting the upgrade.Everything upgraded fine, however some applications simply wont launch. For instance, if i launch Ubuntu Tweak from the main menu through Applications>System Tools> Ubuntu Tweak, i get the ubuntu tweak splash, but then nothing after that.If i type "ubuntu-tweak" in terminal i get:Quote:
user@user-ubuntu:~$ ubuntu-tweak
/usr/bin/ubuntu-tweak:97: Warning: g_object_get_qdata: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Ran 'do-release-upgrade -d'on my server running Hardy. No problems during the upgrade.Rebooted after the upgrade completed, and I was presented with the new plymouth screen. This sucks for servers. It sat there displaying the logo for ~5 minutes.Hit CTRL+ALT+F1 through F8 and didn't see anything on the virtual consoles. Finally figured out that I had to hit ESC on the plymouth screen to actually see what was going on.It said /dev/sdi1 had problems along with /dev/md0.It sat there forever with no fsck status and no HDD lights blinking.
SysRq+REISUB and tweaked the boot parameter to remove 'quiet splash' and appended 'S' for single-user mode.Got the attached screenshot. The box has been sitting like this for ~15 minutes. Not entirely sure what to report a bug against at the moment. Plus the somewhat-new requirement of running 'ubuntu-bug' is pretty retarded in this situation. (Yeah, I know I can add some string to the URL to get around it.Why is it such a pain in the *** to report a bug?)I'm going to do some more digging to try and find out what is dying during boot. The new boot process is a bit of a mystery to me still, so if anyone has pointers or any devs want more detailed information,

My problem is that I can' t launch my PHP files in Firefox to see them local.
I have Apache, PHP and MySQL installed.
I also moved my web folder to /var/www but still can't see them.
I can see the default html file: "It works!" but not my files.
Firefox is still asking what it should do with the file, if it should open or save it. But I can't see them.

I have both ubuntu and kde-desktop installed, and after trying KDM, switched back to GDM which worked fine for a while (although KDE changed my other gnome settings like usplash and cursors which took a while to change back). A day later, though, when I start up my system, the screen flickers a few times then shows me a message that an x-server is already running, so hit no to try loading it on '0' again or yes to try another number.
If I hit no, it will briefly show me the KDE login screen refresh a few times and go back to the menu. If I hit yes, it refreshes about 7 times and finally shows the gnome login screen. This process takes a long time and I'm not sure is great for my screen.

I have a problem concerning about launching Firefox from NIS accounts. But it works perfectly if is started on terminal by the the local root account.
I have several hosts that's connected to a NIS server. When I tried to launch Firefox from one of these hosts, I got no response (Case 1 below). Here are the scenarios:
Case 1 - Fail to launch Firefox as NIS user: I login as NIS user account on the host, then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal. But then I got no response from the terminal (the web browser didn't appear on the screen).
Case 2 - Success to launch Firefox as root: I login as root on the host, then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal. The browser has appeared on the screen.
Case 3 - Success to launch Firefox as NIS user: I login as NIS user account on the host, then from a terminal, I login as root (using "su"), then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal as root. The browser has appeared on the screen. Then immediately, without closing the browser window, I opened a new terminal as NIS user, then I tried to launch Firefox by typing "firefox" on the terminal as NIS user.

I have several remotely hosted boxes (running 9.10 Server 64-bit) that I'd like to upgrade at some point to Lucid Server, preferably using do-release-upgrade.
Is this possible currently via SSH, without lockout or breakage?
Theoretically, I can have the datacenter staff do the upgrade for me, but I'd prefer to do it myself if it's possible to do so.

We have an Old 7.10 server which i want to upgrade to 10 but i cant work out how to do it, or if its still possible. I ran this:
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core (Which says its up to date)
and then
sudo do-release-upgrade
which i found here:
[URL]
But all it comes back with is:
No new release found.
From what i gather i need to go to 8 before i can go to 10.

I need immediate assistance on the upgrade process off ubuntu server from version 9.04 to 9.10. Here is my output after running do-release-upgrade. I first ran the release upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, which ran really smoothely without errors and at the end prompted a reboot. I have rebooted and decided to upgrade further - 9.04 to 9.10. And here is the result. I saw this long into the upgrade process, somewhere 1.5 hours into the upgrade: [URL]

My Server is 8.04 (hardy) and Apache is 2.2.8. I have been receiving emails from Apache each time a new stable release is available, most of which say you should install them due to security issues. The current stable release of apache being offered is 2.2.17
Q1) Do you recommend I upgrade from Apache 2.2.8 to 2.2.17?
Q2) Does this come automatically with my regular updates via Update Manager once the Ubuntu community thinks its stable enough (it appears that it doesn't)?
Q3) What is the best way to install the update?
Q4) Any concerns about installing it into a live environment? I don't have a development platform to try it in first.

I have just found a 120gb scsi drive which i would like to use as my system drive instead of my current 80gb scsi drive. I cannot simply plug the drive in for extra storage as i don't have a spare scsi slot! only have 2 and one is for the dvd-drive
is it ok just to dd the one onto the other? can i do this whilst the system is live? or should i use a live cd? or better still put both drives into a separate linux box?
its currently formatted to ext3.
plus would i need to use any special switches using the dd command? or would it simply be :
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
just trying to avoid a re-install!

I have an Ubuntu 8.04 server running 2.6.24-23-server. I have a godaddy account and I am trying to upgrade my os version to 10.04, which requires a kernel upgrade. I have tried ksplice but kernel 2.6.24-23-server is not supported. I have heard about screen sessions but I have not found it possible to reboot one screen while having the other screen stay persistent if it is possible. So the main question is how to update Ubunut 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04 with out rebooting the entire server? Rebooting is completely not an option at the moment.

I upgraded the boot loader using apt-get upgrade. So Grub upgraded and I believe it automatically ran the upgrade-grub-from-legacy executable. I was confused on what to do so I selected all drives. When I did that, I received a bunch of messages, I will write only non-redundant ones:
mdadm group disk not found (many times, over 20 or so) installation finished, no errors reported (4 times, I guess for my 4 hard drives)Found linux image vmlinux Found initrd image Next, I reboot, and absolutely nothing, not even a grub prompt!! So I tried the following:
1) grub-install /dev/sda1
2) Super grub disk
3) Ubuntu Server Installation CD in rescue mode trying, I get the infamous red error screen when trying to install grub
Nothing worked! My partitions are all there and I can see them and mount them from rescue CD, but I cannot boot to the system, My partitions layout:
One LVM sitting on two RAID-1 Drives Sitting on all four hard drives sda, sdb, sdc, sdd
One Root partition /dev/md2 in RAID-1 Drive sitting on two of the four drives (sda2 and sdb2) Four bios_grub partitions sda1, sdb1, sdc1 and sdd1 each ~1MB Two Swap partitions on two raid drives
I would give more detail but I think the problem is probably in the bootloader configuration because I can access all partitions including LVM and RAIDs from the rescue CD.

I'm just about to commence a full reinstall of my home media server. Planning on using 1x 1tb and 7x 1.5TB drives in raid 6. I notice the version of mdadm distributed in Ubuntu is 2.6.7.1, but versions exist up to 2.6.9 (excluding all the 3.X ones) Is it worth using a later version? Or is 2.6.7.1 used for a particular reason?

When I was upgrading my system (ubuntu server edition) today from 8.10 to 10.04 (of course in small steps: upgrade version after version) everything seemed running smoothly. But when I restarted it, it gave an error message: Gave up waiting on root device. Screenshot of error and grub menu attached. I've read some information about it and applied the possible workaround given here: [URL]. My system is very old and so is the HDD: it uses an IDE connector. Typing 'exit' doesn't work either.

java -Xmx$raM -Xms$raM -jar minecraft_server.jar noguibut I knowthat that won't work because there is the M at the end of the variable $ra, is there a way I could make this work? I believe that the M at the end is required to specify the measurement unit.

Prior to posting this I entered search arguments, "Busybox," then "initramfs" to attempt to find another user who may have experienced the same thing; if the solution is imbedded in the message threads, I must have missed it. On hand is a Ubuntu Server 8.04.3 installer CD. What works: Installs to a Mac Pro under both Parallels, and then under Fusion both were successful first try.
Install to a newly purchased 2 gig Acer Aspire One seems to have succeeded, but upon launching from Grub, Busybox/initramfs intercepts and halts the launch with an error I don't understand:
Starting up ...
Loading, please wait ...
Check root = bootary cat /proc/cmdline
[code]....
The new Acer-PC Aspire One was partitioned into four 80 gig partitions using the Paragon software to do the partitioning. XP is on the first, and Ubuntu Server on the next 80 gig partition. Install was "successfully" done from a Lite-On external CD/DVD over USB.
During the install I changed the default name from Ubuntu to something else (probably a bad idea), and I naively entered "/" root to answer the mount question (finding nothing to tell me what to do). Ubuntu required a disk driver choice from a long list - finding no reference or guidance as to what to enter, I naively entered IDE Generic, and it took (I guess it "took").
FWIW the Ubuntu installer didn't require me to indentify the mount entry or the disk driver during installs on my Mac (Fusion/Parallels).I did connect the Internet during the install. I did checkoff/install LAMP during the install from CD. Goal: To use Joomla in a mock server environment.

I'm kinda new to all of this so I believe there's a simple solution for what I need I just don't know how it's done.
So I've configured a vsftpd, ftp server and enabled the anonymous user, therefore when I do
Code:
ftp://my_location.com
a directory like view is displayed in my web browser, corresponding to /srv/ftp where the files for the anonymous account are kept. Now I've made a little web page and I've copied it there, and can be executed running main.html so the address to access the web page would be
Code:
ftp://my_location.com/main.html
My problem is that I don't want anybody to have the possibility to see the directory like display so I'm wondering if when someone does ftp://my_location.com can't this be redirected so it will do ftp://my_location.com/main.html instead?, making the display of files and directories impossible from the ftp://my_location.com

I am trying to launch a java web application automatically when the server starts from rc.local. Logged in as root with a console I can call the jar directly "java -jar /apps/web/fitapp.jar &" everything starts no problems. Once I add the same command to rc.local and reboot the webapp fails to start. Re-directing the output shows "Unable to access jarfile fitapp.jar". I've tried setting java environment variables (using in the rc.local, and in root's profile (bash), but that error persists.

I thought I'd give 10.04 a try since it's an LTS release and I was still using Jaunty. I did the upgrade over SSH using sudo*do-release-upgrade*-d and at first it just upgraded me to Karmic. After the reboot I ran the same command again and it looked like it was upgrading this time to Lucid. Now however after the reboot I no longer could log in (no SSH) and after inspecting the system locally by digging out and old monitor and keyboard, it seams the system hangs during boot.
I went into the Grub menu and found that there is no server kernel listed (apart from the old Jaunty one), only generic-pae and generic. None of these will boot, and if I try the recovery modes the keyboard doesn't function when I get to the recovery menu. Also if I boot the old 2.6.28-17-server, it does boot, but the keyboard also won't function once it boots. I can SSH in once the old kernel has booted, but when I tried to install linux-image-2.6.32-19-server via apt, it can't be found. Furher investigation online sems to indicate that there's only a 64-bit server package and no 32-bit package. What's that all about, is 32-bit no longer supported on the server platfom, and if so is my install now screwed?

Just wondering if this is feasible/sensible. I'm running a server with 8.04 LTS server edition, and I'd like to upgrade to the latest version of sshd because the version included with 8.04 doesn't easily support chroots and I know it's simple to set up in newer versions. There's no official backport, and I don't want to upgrade the whole OS to 10.04 or 9.10, so I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade only the sshd package using a newer repository or something like that?
