Aug 9, 2011I am using Ubuntu 11.04 with a intel core i3 and ati radeon HD 5650 with the Intel HD switchable graphics.I had some problems with the ATI drivers ''ccc''-fglrx in the beginning.And boot problems with black screen, and black screen at GRUB every time i updated.But it seems to work now i guess i can play Ubuntu games like Alien arena So i decided to try installing games with WINE l Warcraft 3 l Oblivion l etc But any time i run a game with WINE, my laptop screen blacks out and freezes .

Sep 23, 2010I have dual boot Windows 7 Pro and Fedora Core 13 (Round 1)If I change the time on Windows it bumps my Fedora time backwards 6 hours (Round 2)if i change the time on Fedora it knocks my Windows time forward 6 hours
This is only a two round bout, the judges are picking the winner. What do you all think? The obvious solution is just change the time zone in one of the systems to compensate. I was just looking for other ideas.

You are running the Second Life Viewer on a x86_64 platform. The most common problems when launching the Viewer (particularly 'bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: not found' and 'error while loading shared libraries') may be solved by installing your Linux
This problem was easily found using search with solutions for Fedora 11.
The following information has been found for adding the 32 bit support to Fedora 11 but it does not work in Fedora 12.
The file created in the instructions below is a list of the 32 bit libraries. It is then called as input to yum to simply install them.
"Add the Libraries Next, add the 32-bit libraries by copying the following list, and pasting it into a text file. Save it as �Fedora-ia32.txt�."
Another post says that was all unnecessary as the following commands would do the same thing.
Could have simply been achieved by calling:$ yum install SDL.i586...(Or by selecting SDL.i586 in add/remove programs.)
The problem I have with Fedora 12 are neither of these will install anything in Fedora 12. Looking at add/remove programs does not yield anthing that looks like it is 32 bit support when searching with the argument "SDL".
Does anyone know how to install 32 bit support into Fedora 12 64 bit version ? I like the simple yum expression rather than long lists like the first example uses, but I'll try anything if it works.
A side question to this entire experiment is what chance would you give to Second Life being able to be run remotely using VNC? I would think if it runes on the Linux machine, using a remote terminal would have little impact. Using VNC isn't the usual way this will be run, I just wonder if it would work at all.

Mar 26, 2010I am a player of Battle for Wesnoth, one of the best Ubuntu games. I have been running Wesnoth 1.6.5 (stable) on Ubuntu 9.10. But many a times, sound stops, and Wesnoth needs to be closed from System Monitor by killing processes, or using "killall -ser username" Command from Console. So, in Wesnoth Channel, they told that it is a problem of ALSA.

Apr 28, 2010I have both ubuntu and kde-desktop installed, and after trying KDM, switched back to GDM which worked fine for a while (although KDE changed my other gnome settings like usplash and cursors which took a while to change back). A day later, though, when I start up my system, the screen flickers a few times then shows me a message that an x-server is already running, so hit no to try loading it on '0' again or yes to try another number.
If I hit no, it will briefly show me the KDE login screen refresh a few times and go back to the menu. If I hit yes, it refreshes about 7 times and finally shows the gnome login screen. This process takes a long time and I'm not sure is great for my screen.

Mar 9, 2010I spent most of the day yesterday trying to make this work and haven't gotten really anywhere with it. Building from source quietly failed although it built without error and I got checkinstall to pack it up it didn't actually work.So I rolled back to the repository version of rtorrent.As I understand it, the things I need to do are (I am thwarted at every step):create user with --disabled-password optioncreating the user is no problem except they seem to have no shell, and running any command while su'd as that user throws an error like Code: Cannot open your terminal '/dev/pts/1' - please check.
I found somewhere that changing the permissions on /dev/pts/N solves this problem however N can change after a reboot, or probably following other events so that's likely not the right fix.create init script to run rtorrent as user in previous stepI found an example that seems like it works but I wont know for sure until I get the prior step worked out fully.

My second question is that when i partitioned it ( was kinda giving it a test run to see if i could cope with the change from windows) I remember not being able to run world of warcraft. I couldn't get wine to run it. I want to run starcraft II and I'm not sure how thats going to go over. Is that going to give me a problem? Jun 1, 2011I acquired an old ML370 Proliant server, and I'm attempting to find a way to control the fan speed, as all three noisy fans are running at full blast, and I had planned to keep this thing in the office, because it has no wireless capability or support.
I know the following:HP has a suite of programs that are variously called Insight Control Manager, Server Health driver, HP-health, hpasm, and a few more I can't remember. Obviously these are different iterations of the same program, but I have been unable to determine which one I need, and I've been completely unable to find a way to install any of them or find the repository that contains them.
The website: Download Drivers and SoftwareIt lists a lot of different Enterprise-class Server OSes, but nothing about Ubuntu or any home server OSes. I've only been at this for a week, so I don't know which of these would work with Ubuntu Server, or how to make them work if their aptitude file extension is not .deb. I'm currently running Server version 10.10, as 11.04 gave me monitor troubles.

Feb 14, 2010I've had many problems with Linux so far. Here's just one: I love Warcraft 3. So I bought Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne today. I installed them correctly with WINE and tried to open. It starts to open like it does at internet cafes, so I think its fine. But then the screen resolution keeps changing and it doesn't get anywhere.
Next problem:I ask my friend who has warcraft 3 on Linux. He says you don't have the right drivers. I go to System > Administrator > Hardware Drivers and as he said the applet said: "No proprietary drivers installed". My friend says to check the Video graphics card. But I don't see where i can find what model it is. My computer is Compaq presario CQ60 with the default video/graphics cards. I know nothing about drivers, If I can't find a solution ill probably reformat my computer to Windows 7.

All of these things got me where I am today. WoW will run in OpenGL mode for a couple seconds after loading my character and then wine crashes with this error from the Terminal code...

The new panel layout and sidebar thingy looks pretty sweet at first glance, but I can't find a durn thing. :s But to the point, went to run World of Warcraft after the update and the launcher starts, then after hitting play a fatal error pops up.

General :: World Of Warcraft And The Mystery Of The Partially Working Key?
Feb 17, 2010I run openSUSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6.31.12) and I use Wine 1.1.38 to play World of Warcraft from the konsole terminal application. For the most part this works okay, but there is one small issue that continues to annoy me:
Look at your keyboard (assuming standard QWERTY no-name keyboard) - see the key just left of your Backspace key? That key is only partially working for me in WoW. I cannot bind it to any action bar button in-game, with or without addons enabled. For some reason the key works fine when entering text into the chat console though.
I have used xev to get a bit of data on the key itself - not that it is that informative to me though, but the absence of the issue when playing WoW through Windows would suggest that it is somehow endemic to my Linux configuration:

I tried with making a link to ''wow.exe'' and right-click ''open with wine windows program loader'' but ended up with a blue screen and a black square as my pointer, i can heard the login music but no picture. This is always what it ended up with every time it froze. I check the log and it usually on that message. and I switched back to the previous kernel and assumed it the newest kernel causing problem. I had this problem before in my Ubuntu 8.10, so i switched to the previous kernel and the problem is solved. So on my ubuntu 9.10, I switched to the previous kernel, it still have the same result. I'm running out of ideas. I been thinking about switching to 8.10. The reason why I like 9.10 because of ext4 support

Apr 2, 2011I have a bit of a problem that I don't understand and would like some help please - I will try and explain the best way I can. I installed Ubuntu using the WUBI installer and so I can access my Windows partition in /host. Using Wine I can run World of Warcraft by going to /host/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe But I would like to create a link on my desktop to that file so I do not have to keep going to that path everytime.
The Problem - when I click make link and drag it to my desktop I double click the file (expecting it to just act like a windows shorcut) but it doesn't - it creates some of the files that are in the world of warcraft folder on the desktop and then fails to open with message: Failed to open archive dataart etc...its like it is creating a copy of files on my desktop of what is already in the WoW folder.

When i play Music or Video i have no problems at all.
But.
Have World of Warcraft installed trough Wine and all is working perfect. The thing is that i hear a weird chirping sound when i log in the game (1 time) and then i hear a sort of ticking sound on the background and it stays there no matter if a disable music or not.
Have also tried all 3 settings in sound config (ingame) eg. System Default, Pulse Audio Software ((Null)) and ALSA Software on Default ((null)).
The weird ticking sound is staying.
Anyone knows a solution of have a hint where i must look to solve this ?

Mar 31, 2010I have a problem with WoW 3.3, when it starts I get a Black Screen, but I can hear the sound, and the windows responds to keypresses (like, pressing Esc exits the game, o when I press enter I hear the sound of logging in).I have a Lenovo G530, with Intel GMA X4500 as display processor. I think that the drivers are working fine, as I can run all the OpenGL games without problems. I have Ubu 9.10 and Wine 1.2.
