is it possible to use a live cd to boot on a windows machine then scan with clam av if so how would you load AV, would it be possible to have AV on the same cd or would a seperate usb work? & not install it but use via cd/usb
View 3 RepliesI've made a Live CD of version 10.04 on a machine running 10.04 (amd64). The disk works fine on another machine but does not boot on the machine that created it. The CD/DVD is new and works for other things so I don't think it is this. The Live CD gets to the ISOLINUX screen but instead of "Loading" the screen goes blank and the system shuts down. I've tried everything I can think of (remember the disk works fine on another machine).

It's a pain as I have tumbleweed on the machine and prior to putting the radeon card in it I would use a live usb drive to backup the system prior to updating, when I had an nividia card in the machine live usb and live cd would both boot no problem so it pretty much has to be something about the way it's handling the radeon card (like trying to load the non-existent fglrx driver regardless of what I do to try stopping that maybe?)
Don't know what else to try though and if I can't get it booting off a live opensuse I can see myself putting another os on it somewhere just for backing up the system before any updates

So I needed to remove linux from a dual boot, single drive setup I had going. Without thinking I was in Windows XP and formatted the linux partition I had created. After trying to reboot the computer I receive a Grub 1.5 Error 17 rightfully so.
I am having a hard time finding a solution... All I need to do is get the machine back to being able to boot into Windows without any prompts.

alrighty, long story short, I screwed up. I had installed a copy of ubuntu 9.1 to my sda1 partition and a copy of windows 7 to sda2 and it worked pretty well, but after needing to change the partitions around, I deleted sda1 and did a wubi install. I forgot to adjust the mbr before deleting the ubuntu install and my live CD is still running ubuntu 9.1 (think that's grub 1.5) and I can't update the live CD, as my only functioning OS is currently running off it. I suspect, therefore, that the mbr is still pointing to a now non-existant partition to find the boot files. So, in short, how do I use my current live CD to allow me to boot into windows in this situation? my current partition table is sda2: windows 7/wubi, sda1: media/backups

i am looking forward to having my own computer again will be installing ubuntu on it. but, before i install ubuntu, i would like to know how to remove ubuntu and return the new computer to its original state if it ever becomes necessary.
i was comforatable using programs such as mbrfix along with gparted to accomplish this task with my old computer, but that was a 32 bit windows xp machine.
will i be able to use these programs with my new laptop? i'm unfamiliar with 64 bit systems, windows 7 etc. and how they may differ from the older computer that i was used to.
I've just installed 11.04 on a new machine, to be dual booted with Windows 7. The installation process completed, popped the disc back out, but when booting up I get no boot menu and just load Windows 7. I don't get any error messages or any sort of feedback. If i go into BIOS, I only have Windows 7 as a bootable option. I presumed grub or an equivalent would be installed as part of the installation.

I then installed 64-bit Windows 7 on the same hard drive, first partition: Sdb1 (Sdb2 is formatted NTFSd willusedasstorage).Windows installed fine.Then I installed Windows in 32-bit on the first hard drive, first partion: Sda1. Sda2 will again be used as storage.When I boot up, Windows boot manager gives me the option of the two windows OS's to install (but not Ubuntu of course).I wanted to boot into the Live CD, where I would reinstall grub, assuming it would recognize my two Windows, and I could boot into any of the three OS's upon start-up.The Ubuntu Live CD, will act as though it is going to boot, bringing me up to the loading screen, then it cuts out to "busy box" and I am not sure what to do. Buys box is almost like a command prompt, but I don't understand the commands.

Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?

Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

Anytime I try to access the machine it asks me for my password...I enter it but it says it is invalid....is there anyway to reset it? View 2 Replies View RelatedI remember it being really easy to add a printer attached to another computer using Ubuntu, but I don't remember exactly what made it so easy. All I know is that now that I have switched to Kubuntu the process has become much harder because now I have to find out some special locations, numbers etc. for it to connect to the printer. It's connected to a Windows XP machine on the other side of the house.
It says alot about 'contacting the network administrator' if I am unsure about what to put in. But I am more or less the network administrator. how to find out what numbers to put in so that my Linux machine can connect and print to the Windows machine? Or maybe someone knows a few commands to share? I go to Applications > Settings > System settings, Printer configuration, New Printer, New Network printer, and then there are a few options but I don't know which one to choose. Windows Printer via Samba, I guess? Then in the box that says smb://[enter stuff here] I need to put in info but I don't know how to find that info.
I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine.In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.
When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder.Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?
Right now I just installed open ssh because i was told its a great thing to have for remote controlling my machine if I am at work on my windows system. My question is, how on earth do I acess my machine from my windows machine now that its installed? i did sudo apt-get ssh and thats about all so far...

i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a roughly 3-year old PC that I put together from parts (listed below) that has been running great with various flavors of Linux as the sole operating system. It is currently running Ubuntu 10.4. A couple of months ago, it started to have intermittent problems booting. The machine will hang before it gets to the Ubuntu "boot" screen with the dots that show progress as the machine boots. If I look at the power on messages from the BIOS, it fails at different points in the process - sometimes during the memory test, sometimes during the search for IDE drives. It fails about 2 out of every 5 attempts to boot. It sometimes takes 2-3 tries at booting before it actually works. Sometimes when it does boot, the Ethernet jack doesn't work and I see errors in syslog about there not being a carrier.
There are no syslog entries when the machine does not boot.The machine is plugged into a UPS. The UPS indicates that it is running at 13% of capacity at 123V/60Hz. I'm in the US.Once the machine boots normally, it will stay up without issues for days.I've checked the 4GB of RAM (I added 2GB to the original 2GB several months ago) using the memory testing application on the System Rescue CD and no errors were found.I've replaced the motherboard battery, which seemed to help for a few weeks, but then the problem returned.I've checked the hard drive for errors using the SMART diagnostics tool in System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and buy running fsck.The interior of the case is not very dusty and all the fans appear to be working.Are there things I can do to investigate and fix this issue other than starting to replace components - starting with the motherboard and the power supply?The parts of the machine:

They have pictures and documents everywhere so I figured I would just backup their entire HDD onto my external one and let them go in and transfer them back off. I keep proper backups so this isn't how I normally do things. I have done similar things in the past with dieing HDD's and Knoppix but I have never had this issue. I burned a CD using the latest ISO and Ubuntu seen both the main HDD and my external. I just copied all the contents of the main HDD over to the external. All went well and I could browse and view all the files from the external HDD after the transfer using the live CD. Unfortunately I am having an issue seeing the external HDD in Windows. As soon as I hook the drive up - windows says I need to Format it(Which I won't do obviously). But if I boot the live CD I can still see and use the files. How do can I get windows to see the drive and files without destroying data?

I am using the synergy client to share mouse/keyboard but I would like to run Xming which is a Xserver for windows to display on my Windows machine. I have 3 monitors 1 is connected to the Linux machine and then I have 2 connected to the windows vista and I want to share 1 one using a windows Xserver. I have the server installed and setup on my windows machine and I just curios on how to configure my Xorg.conf file to use my Xming Xserver as a seccond monitor.
