Ubuntu :: Installing Windows - Boot Directly To The External Monitor

I have a laptop with a busted screen and no way to boot directly to the external monitor with ubuntu installed and the thing is I want to install windows 7. Anybody know of anyway to do this without being able to see the screen before the os loads? So far I have messed around with installing windows 7 in vm box and trying to turn the vdi file into a valid partition and also tried installing it with wine but it couldn't find the temp folder to copy the install files.

i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

update-grub
and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.

I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 which I would like to use completely with any Linux OS. I have tried to install Linux Ubuntu 10.04.1 but it appears that it doesn't recognize the external monitor and ends the installation. I have a clean hard drive that I could install but I do not know which of the two drives I should replace. I can only get into windows in safe mode and I would think this may have something to do with the problem, don't no.

I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default).Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

After installing ubuntu 9.10 on external HDD I cannot boot vista if external usb is unplugged(where ubuntu is installed). it says grub loading and after that recover grub ( i think that is what is says ... not certain in this moment ) anyway hope you get my dilemma. If you need more information I'll be glad to provide it.

Have a Dell Studio XPS with 64 bit Meerkat on it. Whenever I connect my Samsung external monitor by displayport/dvi ubuntu no longer boots. Machine unresponsive and have to cut power and disconnect it. :/

Months ago one of my computers died. I have bought a brand new one laptop, but I have a problem at the moment I wanted to install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows 7: the new partition that windows 7 reserves for securing system files.
There are three partitions: Windows 7 principal, Windows 7 for securing system files (at the drive's beginning) and the recovery partition that HP puts there. Then I only have option to resize the Windows principal partition and get another principal partition. My question is if you know how to deal with this?
The other option you can help me is to advise me about some external hard drives to install ubuntu in them and don't touch the internal disk of my laptop.

I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.

My software and hardware information are as follows. I have Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4.5 installed on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I believe it's a 64 bit processor; it's an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The external monitor is a Dell as well.
My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. The results of xrandr -q (with or without the external monitor attached: it doesn't appear to change) are as follows.

I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.
My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).
I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.

I installed a copy of Debian Jessie server and then tried to install a light GUI, specifically XFCE4. I am accessing my installation directly via a mouse/ keyboard and monitor, not remotely. After installing the Debian server software, I ran the following commands: apt-get install xfce4
It all appeared to go well, with no error messages. I then tried to launch the XFCE4 interface by running the following command: xfdesktop.However, all I get is the following error message:Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display.what I need to do here to succesfully launch XFCE4?

So I have a Samsung monitor at work (model 2343BWX) that I use in addition to my laptop screen. My computer is a T500 think pad. When I boot into ubuntu 10.04 from previously shutting down the computer in ubuntu I can't detect the monitor. If I however boot first into windows (I don't even have to enter my password, I can just press shutdown on the menu instead of logging in, and then boot into ubuntu) and it auto detects the monitor.
I have tried going to System -> Preferences Monitors and clicking "Detect Monitors" it doesn't work. Anyone know how this could be?

I cannot boot windows after I installed Debian to my external hd.When I turn on my PC, GRUB prompts me to boot either Debian or Windows. It says that windows is in the right place (sda0) but if I go to boot it, I get a message that says: "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."

I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).

When i go top and click on the link to download/install de debian-multimedia-keyring, a pop-up windows appears with the choice to open the file with file-roller. But i want to open it with aptitude to get it installed.i missing something? How can i setup Iceweasel to make sure the next time .deb files can be installed directly from the source website

I have Mandrake 7.1 installed on a laptop and I have several problems that an upgrade would likely fix or provide a path that will support a fix. The Mousepad is irratic and the PCMCIA WiFi and Ethernet cards are not recognized. What's a good way to upgrade? (I can access the network from an external modem and from a dual-boot Windows 98 WiFi)

I had 2 separate partitions on my computer: one for Windows 7, one without a system on it. On the 2nd of the described partition at the end of it I installed Debian Linux. (After that I had 3 usable / visible partitions.) I was looking for less hassle with drivers so I decided to install Ubuntu and make greater the partition for Linux. In a forum I saw an article describing how to uninstall (remove) Debian. Roughly it described the process as follows:Delete Debian partition from Windows. Restart and in repair mode enter "repairmbr".
I did the first step. After the restart, the grub seemed to be damaged and it wouldn't show any options. Started the Ubuntu LiveCD, made the "Linux" partition greater, moved it to the beginning of the original of the to large partitions, transformed it to an extended partition, created the swap area in the beginning of it and installed Ubuntu 10.10. All went well, a new grub was created, Windows loader was detected, but didn't work. Same after upgraded to a newer version of Linux generic kernel. The installation process detected the Windows 7 but after restart it does not work. When trying to enter it, for about 1..2 seconds the screen turns black and again the same Grub menu is shown. So the problem is that I cannot boot into Windows 7, I had pre-installed it so I don't have a disk for it. Recovery disks I made seems to be for re-installation only which is not an option at this time. All repair modes where accessible when starting Windows; any of them is not accessible.
Both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 are 64-bit systems.

I'm not sure if here is the right place to ask this. After installing Ubuntu 11.04 my windows 7 installation can't boot again. I installed ubuntu on a different partiton. I can see the windows partition on my ubuntu, from the disk utility, the partition type is unknown(0x42), trying to change it gives me error.

I tried deleting the partition where ubuntu was installed using the boot cd and going into its demo mode of ubuntu. I thought this would delete Grub but i was wrong so now grub cant find the partition ..I would like to believe if I were to delete grub off the system I could boot windows xp. what should I do?

I installed Lucid Lynx on a dual boot with a previously installed copy of Windows 7 and everything installed fine via Wubi...but now when I boot up and I get to my Boot Mgr and select Ubuntu I get the following message and can not get past a black screen stating -

I have tried to read what others have done to fix this but nothing has worked so far,Also I can still log into Windows 7 just fine, just no Linux...

So I finished downloading Windows XP Ultimate (It is real. It's not officially supported by Microsoft) and I expected it to be small like Ubuntu was. I only have a CD-RW drive. I realized the extreme size difference with Ubuntu over 600mb and XPU over 4gb. I know how to modify partitions from the Live CD. I'm wondering if it's possible to install XPU or any version of XP while the operating system is active. It was possible with Windows 98. This might be the wrong place to post, but I really want to dual-boot Windows. Linux is great, but I would like to use SOME of my stuff without WINE.

I have an Asus Xonar DS, and am getting no sound in Windows whatsoever. I'm pretty sure something in Ubuntu is causing the problem as this only started happening after I installed it. I used to get heavily distorted sound in Windows, and now nothing at all. I've tried removing pulseaudio and disabled alsa, restarted ubuntu and then went into Windows, and it didn't help. Sound is 100% fine in ubuntu.

I want to set up my PC so that I have Windows 7 installed on one hard drive and Ubuntu Studio installed on a completely separate hard drive. I currently have both hard drives installed in my PC and the larger one (640GB) has Windows 7 installed and is currently taking up that entire drive. My other hard drive (160GB) has a wubi install of Ubuntu 10.10 on it so it shows up on the Windows boot menu. What I want to do is wipe the smaller hard drive and install Ubuntu Studio on it and have it show up in the boot menu just like my wubi install does.
I need to know things like:
1. When I install Ubuntu Studio, do I install the boot loader to the MBR of the hard drive I'm installing it on?
2. How exactly do I add Ubuntu Studio to the Windows boot loader?
