After installing ubuntu 9.10 on external HDD I cannot boot vista if external usb is unplugged(where ubuntu is installed). it says grub loading and after that recover grub ( i think that is what is says ... not certain in this moment ) anyway hope you get my dilemma. If you need more information I'll be glad to provide it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedInstalled ubuntu 10.4 over previous ubuntu on Intel 945G. After installation and reboot the system does not boot: "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key".
Installation was done from USB-stick, prepared by UNETBOOTin. I have two HD's, one used for system + storage, another one just for storage. I manually deleted previous system partitions of previous ubuntu install in system HD. The system HD had about 1/3 of free and unallocated space for system partitions, which ubuntu installer created during the installation.
I tried to reinstall grub from bootable USB-stick and it succeeded but it did not help. The system is still not bootable.
I have used ubuntu for years and never happened something like this. Am I missing something or is ubuntu missing something???
HW failure is ofcourse possible but I am quite skeptical about it because Live ubuntu from USB-stick works well.
i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
I'm currently dual-booting Vista and Win 7. Do I have to install Grub or can I continue to use the Windows boot loader?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently use my PC for work, music [I'm a DJ by profession], and gaming. It's got good specs and I've recently gotten a 500GB hard drive for it. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 [using the 9.10 CD and running update-manager --devel-release]. However, in my infinite foresight, I installed Ubuntu to take up the whole drive, /home and all. I've only used about 80GB of space in /home so backing it up to start off a triple boot shouldn't be a problem.
Currently, my partitioning is /dev/sda1 at 494GB [ext3, mounted as /], /dev/sda2 is a 6.2GB extended partition, and /dev/sda5 is a 6.2GB swap partition. Basically, I need to do the following things, but don't know the least hacky way around it.
1) Repartition to make the Ubuntu's root filesystem take up ~40GB of space
2) Probably have the swap partition immediately after / (is the other extended partition even necessary?)
3) Install Windows 7 to use for gaming in a 60GB partition
4) Windows XP to use for music production in another 60GB part
5) Have the rest of the space on the hard drive formatted as NTFS & used for documents for Windows 7 (as D:), Windows XP (also as D:), and Ubuntu (used as /home/saxon).
Any pointers? I've searched around but I couldn't find anyone else with my exact problem - most people have Windows installed first and only want a dual boot. I'm fairly comfortable with the shell so I'm not too bothered about using Term either. Sorry if I've worded this awfully or seemed like a bit of an idiot
I recently installed ubuntu netbook remix on my pc with my usb. I decided to try another version of ubuntu and created another bootable usb but the system won't boot from it. I've tried different sticks so I guess it has something to do with what ubuntu did to my startup. How can I enable booting from a usb again? (It's already set in the bios)
Note: Is there any way to restore my mbr as it was before installing ubuntu? I know there are some apps for this on the internet but I have no cd drive and I can't boot from my usb.
managed to get things working so well on my laptop i thought i'd install ubuntu onto an external drive so i can boot to either xp or Ubuntu whenever i want, when i started up after the install it doesn't recognise the drive i loaded it to and appears to have lost the link to xp. the exact words are:

I have a laptop with a busted screen and no way to boot directly to the external monitor with ubuntu installed and the thing is I want to install windows 7. Anybody know of anyway to do this without being able to see the screen before the os loads? So far I have messed around with installing windows 7 in vm box and trying to turn the vdi file into a valid partition and also tried installing it with wine but it couldn't find the temp folder to copy the install files.

Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

my lilo fedora entry boots fine but... at the middle of "after boot" loading the system hangs and stops the usual driver detection, etc (normally, it hangs on the CDROM detection or USB 2.0 camera detection).
Having problems with external hard drives. I may be wrong, but I suspect they originated with an upgrade to 10.04 last Christmas. Around that time I also started using Amazon's S3 storage system, and, as a consequence, I stopped using my WD 80G external drive, previously used to backup my important files.
A week or so ago I decided to start using the WD drive again. I can't remember exactly what I did, but it wasn't happy - never caused any problems before. Details: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy Assuming the device had died - it's about 5 years old - I bought a 160G Samsung S-Series drive - my but they do look neat! Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have solved my problem. I plugged the new drive in, and it happily appeared on my desktop. It seemed a good idea at the time, but I then started to format the drive - using the default option of FAT. All went well at first, but then the format process stopped.
My new Samsung drive now seems to be operating pretty much as the WD device, I can't copy to the drive, and attempts to unmount it generate a response similar to what's happening with the WD drive. Currently, although plugged in, I can't see the drive on my desktop, although it appears under Places. However, when I try to mount the drive, I get the message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG A job is pending on /dev/sdb1
I am trying to install 10.04 to an external HD (not flash). I ran the live CD, installed to it and all seemed to work fine, but I don't want to use GRUB. I ran 7 repair and did a bootrec /fixmbr and it's booting normal, but I can't boot to USB.I want it to boot normal, unless I hit F12 to boot to removable device. Not much of a Linux person, but I am trying to be.

I'm using Windows XP and after I downloaded and tested out Ubuntu 9.10, I decided I'd like it as a second OS, can I install Ubuntu on my external hard drive (1TB)? would installing on an external hard drive take away the risks of losing data etc? If I installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive would it delete any files already on my hard drive?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a raid 0 setup with 2 x 1TB drives. I have an ASUS P8P67 LE motherboard and am using Interl RST for the Raid setup. I'm utterly ignorant of raid and therefore forgive any mistakes... I already had windows 7 installed and was attempting to dual boot ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu from CD. The raid was picked up properly as only one drive by ubuntu. So it picked up the windows MBR and the main windows partition. I resized the main partition and used the "install ubuntu and windows 7 side by side" option. Installation went fine but once I restarted the PC I was welcomed by a grub rescue screen with the message: "error: no such device e196.....". Edit: I used the Windows 7 disc to repair the windows bootloader so I can now boot into Windows 7.
Before doing so I used gparted on the live cd to check the partitions on the drives. The only ones present were the MBR and windows one. So ubuntu seemingly didn't install... Although GRUB did... I was advised by someone on the ubuntu IRC chat to avoid trying to reinstall ubuntu at that point just in case there was an error in the partitioning process. I've since checked the state of the partitions from within windows and there's the MBR partiton, the windows partiton AND the partition that I created for ubuntu... 965MB of the partition that I created is listed as used space as well...
The default (graphical) installer did not work on my PC (i7 quadcore 8 GB DDR3). I have installed Ubuntu using the alternative installer (Desktop, 64 bit) on my external USB drive. I installed grub on the MBR of the second drive (/dev/sdb) as I did not want to touch my (first) Windows disk. After reboot (chosing the USB drive as boot device, else Windows is booted) grub reports an error and enters the rescue mode. I tried all possible combinations of "root=(hdX,Y)" in grub.cfg to no avail.
I repeated the whole procedure but now disconnected the internal HD with Windows. Installation went smooth again (Windows disk was not seen this time), but after reboot (the internal drive connected or not) I again get (slightly different this time) grub error: can not find file.
I tried doing a search and couldn't find anything relatively recent on the topic so here is my question.
I am fairly new to the linux world and am in the process of trying out a couple different distributions. I am doing this by installing them to an external hard drive. This allows me to test them out without affecting my main system in any way. I have already tried openSUSE and it installed with no problems. I am trying to install Ubuntu, however when the installation tries to install GRUB2 it fails asking me for a different location to install it to.
When installing I unhook all drives from the computer except for the dvd drive, usb drive I'm installing from, and the external hard drive I am trying to install Ubuntu to. I'm not sure what else may be of use.
I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).
i had a working multi-boot system, vista on sda1,2; swap sda3; ext=sda4; ubuntu sda5; fedora sda6; data sda7 - i mount the data partition when using all of the linux releases so i don't have to have multiple copies of music, docs, etc. everything has worked fine until yesterday. i tried to install fc12 on sda6, replacing fc11. it required me to format sda6 as ext4. i wasn't sure where i had grub installed, but have a backup of menu.lst in data (sda7), so figured i could let it install to mbr or wherever it wanted to by default. when the install completed and i reboot, i get a black screen and these messages: CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 19 XX XX XX GUID: XXXXX PXE-E53:

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key I tried reinstalling fc12, same exact errors. I then thought maybe the problem had something to do with ext4 partition mixed in with ext3's, so i installed mepis on the sda6, and let it write grub to mbr (i think, not really sure where it wrote it). anyway, i still get the identical black screen. no grub type menu or anything. the screen used to show "DHCP for a few seconds", but doesn't anymore after i disconnected the ethernet cable.........

Months ago one of my computers died. I have bought a brand new one laptop, but I have a problem at the moment I wanted to install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows 7: the new partition that windows 7 reserves for securing system files.
There are three partitions: Windows 7 principal, Windows 7 for securing system files (at the drive's beginning) and the recovery partition that HP puts there. Then I only have option to resize the Windows principal partition and get another principal partition. My question is if you know how to deal with this?
The other option you can help me is to advise me about some external hard drives to install ubuntu in them and don't touch the internal disk of my laptop.
In the past I have been able to succesfully install ubuntu on several external usb drives with up to 500gb in size.Now I am trying to install a copy of ubuntu 10.10 on an external usb iomega 1tb eGo drive but I am having major issues.The installer reports the total disk size as only 124 gb, instead of the 998gb that gParted reports for the same disk. Proceeding with "use the full disk" installs ok, but it doesn't boot.Grub2 reports that it cannot find the kernel.After some desperate attempts to repartition and after some googling I think that the issue may be with the sector size, which fdisk -l reports as 4096kb (all my other drivers report 512kb) and I have the impression that linux is not ready for it (or I lack the knowledge, which seems more likely).I have also tried to install fedora 14. This distribution reports the correct disk size, installs properly, but again, it cannot boot (Fedora uses grub, not grub2), with a very similar message to the grub2 installer.Because of the way I work, I need my external usb drive to be able to boot linux. And I find it difficult to believe that linux doesn't handle 4096kb sector disks, so here I am asking for help . Please note I am not a linux expert.

After I log in with the root I get the message mesg: error tty device is not owned by group 'tty' Can the forum tell me how to troubleshoot this issue so I can boot back up again? I have 2 harddrives in this server and only 1 drive was detected when I first installed CentOS. The error first appeared when I mounted the 2nd drive at the mount point /UserGeneratedData. drive was formatted with ext3 before mounting and did not have any data on it I don't want any software RAID if thats what seems to be going on with "VolGroup00"
After installing Ubuntu on a hardrive that already had XP on it, when I get to the part where I choose what OS to boot, and I select XP, all I see is the Windows loading screen for about 3 seconds, then the pc shuts down and restarts itself, and goes back to the OS options code...
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter removing the Windows HDD from my laptop I installed Ubuntu to a new HDD that I installed in it - it works fine when used as an internal drive. But now I have put the Ubuntu disk in an external enclosure and replaced the original Windows HDD internally.
Now, if I change the BIOS boot priority to CD/DVD -> USB HDD -> Internal HDD will it be the case that I can boot Ubuntu when the external HDD is connected and Windows when not?
Also, if I boot to Unbuntu from the external HDD, will the internal Windows drive be left untouched? I'll be in pretty hot water at home if I damage that!
I Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an external USB Disk Drive - I had chosen to install the boot loader on this drive. When I tried to boot from this drive, I get the the following message:
error: unknown filesystem
after that I get "grub rescue>" prompt
The install was done on /dev/sdb2
I have also tried update-grub using ubuntu 10.04 that i have on my internal drive. It did recognize that I had a kernel on the external drive but still no luck booting. This time i get.
error: no such device d4a3cb16-37b6-416c-a3bc-4f8d03318e28
error: unknown file system
error: you need to load the kernel first
Note that the long device name is the same as the mount point when i do a "df"
