I am trying something a bit tricky.Suppose there is a website URL...Now suppose when i open a file /var/www/ test.php which connects to the above website to gather some info and then allow me to further in the process, i want it to instead direct to a file say /var/www/test_done.php.How do i edit my hosts file for such a scenario? Is there any other better option than using a hosts file ?

I'm looking for a tool that can directly convert mp3 file to a swf file. Tried ffmprg - 'ffmpeg -i master.mp3 -ar 22050 -ab 32 -f swf -y -vn new.swf', output is as follows:
Output #0, swf, to 'new.swf':
Stream #0.0: Audio: 0x0000, 22050 Hz, stereo, 0 kb/s
Stream mapping:
Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
Unsupported codec for output stream #0.0
I found a way to perform this task using ffmpeg to convert the mp3 file to a wav file, and converting the wav into a swf file using swftools (wav2swf), although this is not a good option because the output swf file size is very big - for a 12mb input 320kbps stereo mp3 file, the swf file is 25mb. Also downloaded a free direct mp3 to swf conversion software, which had an output swf file - with the same 12mb mp3 file - of ~400kb.
The requirements I have from the tool are:
1. Can be ran from the shell.
2. Direct conversion, or an indirect one that will produce a small output swf file.
3. Suport for multiple file conversion is a plus.

I have a laptop with a busted screen and no way to boot directly to the external monitor with ubuntu installed and the thing is I want to install windows 7. Anybody know of anyway to do this without being able to see the screen before the os loads? So far I have messed around with installing windows 7 in vm box and trying to turn the vdi file into a valid partition and also tried installing it with wine but it couldn't find the temp folder to copy the install files.

Warning: Do not edit /etc/sudoers directly with an editor; Errors in syntax can cause annoyances (like rendering the root account unusable). You must use the visudo command to edit /etc/sudoers. In the previous section we added your user to the "wheel" group. To give users in the wheel group full root privileges when they precede a command with "sudo", uncomment the following line:
%wheelALL=(ALL) ALL
so i signed in as root and typed in visudo now i alreayd made the changes but how do i exit and save super+x doesnt seem to do it for me since im not using nano and not supposed to cause it causes errors

I'm using F11, KDE, and Dolphin (primarily) as the file viewer. Is there any quick and easy way to be viewing a giant folder of images in the file viewer and then just highlight a few that you want to resize to 800x600 (or whatever)? Currently I have to pull them into GIMP and then resize each one. Alternatively, I can pretty easily do a command line to resize the whole folder, but I don't really need every image resized. I'm mainly going through and thinking "oh, be fun to send this one to so and so" but I don't want to send them the eitire 18Megapixel image. A nice quick resize to 50Kb and 800x600 or something would be perfect but this just hasn't appeared for me yet.

I have access to backup server via rsync protocol (only rsync, nothing else). Now, I want to fetch file from there (which is .tar.gz) and pass it directly to tar command, without saving the archive in local filesystem. To visualize, with ssh access I could:
ssh remote_host cat backup.file.tar.gz | tar xzf - And I will get uncompressed backup locally, without actually storing .tar.gz on local machine. Is it possible to achieve when using rsync?

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04. It came time to add User to the sudoers file: so I decided to simple add User to the admin group: usermod -a -G admin user Then I used visudo to check if admin users had been set to receive sudo privileges. I uncommented the line admin ALL=(ALL) ALL. Nothing happened. I've even tried to add user directly into the sudoers file as user ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL, but that failed too.

I am working on building a customized ISO image of a server based on linux. The thing is after the server is installed and run for the first time, three users have to be created for the various services to run properly. I want this to be automated. To achieve this what is was thinking is automatically enter the user entries in the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files through init scripts when the server starts for the first time after the installation. I tried creating user and assigning password in one of my machine, and the /etc/passwd and the /etc/shadow entries of this user I copied it into the other machine and tried login in on the other machine and everything worked fine. How I am trying to achieve this.

When I google screenshots of Linux I often see that people have a clock directly on their desktop. How is this done?
I'm running Xfce on a Wheezy vm, but without xfce4-panel, so having a clock/date right on the wallpaper/desktop would be great..I don't want a clock in a window.

I am running Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi...I have read that the v2 version of this dongle does not work directly out of the box.Their are multiple tutorials online which provide some pre-compiled files that can be dragged and dropped into some directories and it allows the dongle to work. URL....
However, I would rather download and compile from scratch myself but am unsure how to do this. The raw driver files are available on github here. URL....
(many authors providing pre-compiled files confirm they got the original files from here too).I have used wget and performed the following
mkdir wifiSetup
mv master.zip wifiSetup
cd wifiSetup
unzip master.zip
[code]...

I installed a copy of Debian Jessie server and then tried to install a light GUI, specifically XFCE4. I am accessing my installation directly via a mouse/ keyboard and monitor, not remotely. After installing the Debian server software, I ran the following commands: apt-get install xfce4
It all appeared to go well, with no error messages. I then tried to launch the XFCE4 interface by running the following command: xfdesktop. However, all I get is the following error message:Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display.what I need to do here to succesfully launch XFCE4?

I have a computer with grub installed, and nothing else. I'd like to install Debian on it without having to burn a CD. (and I don't have any flash disks.) It has a nice ethernet card, and I have another computer right next to it with an ethernet card. I also have an ethernet cable. However, I don't have any router free which I can mess with for these purposes. As I've looked up, apparently modern Ethernet cards don't need crossover cables, normal cables will work for this type of connection.
I've tried several different "tutorials" on how to set up a netboot server, but
None of them are complete. All of them assume that you understand how DHCP works, and that you can do things like set up a dnsmasq server. I don't understand the DHCP protocol, with submasks and whatnot (I know that it is the protocol for assigning computer network addresses, and that's it), and I don't think I should have to in order to simply connect two computers. All of the tutorials give you incomplete configuration files, and ask you to fill in things which I don't understand, and for me it doesn't make sense to customize these settings, as I just want to connect them and I really don't care what ip address the TFTP server has or whatnot. All of these assume that you are going through a router. I am not. When I try googling for ways to directly connect two linux computers with an ethernet cable, I can't even find instructions, just more references to "you need crossover cables".
So basically, I have two computers directly connected by ethernet cables. Tell me what packages I need to install, what the contents of my configuration files should look like, and what, if any, commands I need to run in order that when I turn on my second computer, and select network boot, it will start up a minimal debian system.
EDIT: Hmmm, it looks like I actually have a linux kernel installed too, but no root filesystem (so no other programs besides busybox).

My hosting server is running Linux / Apache. It would be very nice to be able to link some files (preferably hard links, but symbolic links also would help), but haven't a clue how to do so. I would be willing to write a server side php script if that would do the trick.

This is my 2nd attempt at installing Debian since 5.0 several months back but I am determined to get it running this time.Install of 64bit Squeeze went well, installed the ati proprietary drivers directly from ati which resulted in horrrible performance.Uninstalled that and followed to the T. At the "aticonfig --initial" part I got the message "No supported devices detected" soI went ahead and entered the config manually. Now on normal boot I get a black screen and I can't seem to boot into Recovery mode as it hangs at Tray or ANSI.
