Ubuntu :: Installing Firefox 4 In Lucid (10.04.2)?
Jun 22, 2011How do I upgrade to firefox 5 under Lucid.
View 5 RepliesHow do I upgrade to firefox 5 under Lucid.
View 5 RepliesJust got Lucid and tried it off the cd before installation. The os sees the net OK, it downloaded updates without a problem, but firefox cannot see the net. Obviously I'm not going to install it until this works!I haven't found anyone else with the same problem in the forums, but the same problem exists on both my two different pcs.Under Karmic firefox works fine, but Opera 9.* had this problem, it could not see the internet no matter what I tried so I gave up trying to use it. Eventually Opera 10 came out and this worked fine. I'd prefer not to have to wait until mozilla fixes what ever this problem is in firefox 3.7, 4.0 or whenever!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Lucid 32 bit on my PC and Firefox 3.6 is ridiculously slow. It's not just rendering pages, simply switching between static tabs (i.e. no pages loading) can take over five seconds sometimes. I have tried all of the fixes that have been suggested around the net relating to pipelining and IPV6 but these have had no noticeable effect (many others said the same but seemingly no resolution).
I would like to install Firefox 3.5 but cannot find a deb/repository. I would simply like to know the best way of installing this so that, if possible it picks up my existing preferences from my current version of Firefox and is recognised by apt so can receive updates etc... in the future which I can choose to apply if I wish. I cannot find out if my prefs and extensions will be picked up if I install via .bzr archive - will this be the case?
Heres' what I get when I try to run it from the terminal.
Code:
anthony@ubuntu:~$ firefox
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/anthony/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/home/anthony/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]
Attempting to load the system libmoon
Segmentation fault
I changed the gnome font settings to make the fonts sharper, but firefox doesn't listen to gnome settings apparently, and the fonts are fuzzy on my screen. i found some methods to fixing it in 9.04, which i did and it worked, but i'm not finding any posts on how to fix this in 10.04. has anyone figured this out yet?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just installed REKONQ 0.4.0 in my Ubuntu 10.04LTS and I am more than happy with it , firefox 3.6 crashed loads of times on mine (I have 3g mobile broadband) and had problems with rubbish download speeds.
What the hell happened at mozilla? Firefox was once my favorite browser but it isn't anymore, I hope Ubuntu 10.10 stick with Rekonq (once it reaches a stable version e.g 0.5.0). Has any one else experienced firefox crashing and slowdown? PS: To try Rekonq 0.4.0 just type the following into terminal:sudo apt-get install rekonq
So far aside from the toolbar customizations not being stored in FF4.0b7, it all seems pretty darn good to me - that issue is even the latest Minefield build!
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there a proper way to install 32-bit Firefox 3.5.11 with Sun Java 1.6.0 on 64-bit Lucid 10.04 Ubuntu? I want to run VMWare guest on Lucid and 64-bit Firefox 3.6.9 has issue with VMware.
View 3 Replies View RelatedProblem occurred after attempting to update firefox and configure evolution. Attempted to update firefox last night, it froze, attempted to open the system monitor to end the unresponsive process, and got a message saying the system was unable to support a new process because it couldn't fork. Did a forced reset, and the following now happens upon starting up. After selecting ubuntu (as it's a dual boot system with Windows XP) at the grub loader, blank screen, to this:
Code:
mount: mounting dev/disk/by-uuid/5b24d4b5-9b8d-4608-9387-0d92756dcdd8 on root
failed: invalid argument
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory

It will not run recovery mode, and I have no bloody what it means by init=bootarg.
EDIT: Nevermind- I'm going to try the methods listed in [URL], and hope the gods of fsck smile upon my lowly hard drive.
I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago (from Karmic) and although everything went smoothly, I've been having this problem:Every now and then, when I'm on FireFox, the whole computer freezes and is unresponsive. The mouse doesn't work, I can't open the terminal, I can't do anything! My only option is to press the restart button on my laptop.I don't know if this is of any relevance, but I use UbuntuStudio, but have been using the proper Linux Kernel. I only selected the RealTime kernel if I'm working on audio editors, which I haven't done since updating to Lucid.y laptop is an HP pavilion zv5000. It has an ATI 9000/9100 graphics card, about 768 mp of ram, and a P4 3GHz processor.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded VMware Player 2.5.5-328052.i386.bundle from the VMware site, moved it to my home directory (/home/user) and then in Terminal proceeded to untar the file with "tar=xzvf VMware-player-2.5.5-328052.i386.bundle. I get the following error:
tar: VMware-player-2.5.5-328052-i386.bundle: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
What am I doing wrong, and how can I successfully unbundle this file so I can proceed to install VMware. By the way, in the man chmod file, there does not appear to be an 'x' option anymore. Is that true?
Cannot connect to [URL]... i have tried [URL]... and [URL]... i can get on any other site. i am running lucid and firefox.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated from karmic to lucid server edition and now firefox wants to download some php files. index.php which is in the same directory is apparently correctly parsed.
Google chrome tells me that the site may be temporarily down and Opera informs me that the connection has been closed by the remote server.
Under karmic I had a standard lamp server installed and everything worked fine.
This is the first time I post in a forum and I hope this is fine here.
I just moved the scripts from the server to a local machine which I updated a couple of weeks ago to lucid.
But I couldn't find a modified version of it for Swiftfox anywhere, so I decided to modify it myself. But I'm not 100% sure that I did it correctly, so I thought I'd ask here.
Also, will Swiftfox 3.6.4 be able to use this same profile? I thought it might not because of the new "Out of process plugins" feature being added.
I got an error during the upgrade but chose to let the upgrade complete. Now my Firefox won't lauch. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it from the Terminal and got the following:Quote:
rick@Desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install firefox

Decided to try out Ubuntu instead of automatically getting the next Windows OS.
I have a Dell Dimension E310 with on board video card (will be relevant soon, I think).
After trying making my own CD and not being able to at least run the LiveCD (thought it was my fault even thought the MD5 #'s matched correctly), I went to Shipit and got a CD delivered of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). When I put the CD into my computer while running windows, the CD is not recognized, which seems strange to me. When I put the same CD into my work laptop (note that both computers are running XP), I can see the contents of the CD. Decide that it might not be an issue and restart the computer in the hope of booting from the CD. CD is never recognized and looking at the bootmenu, it has USB-cdRom at the top of the list.
More information: CPU is an Intel Pentium 4, 3.2Ghz. I don't believe it is a 64bit computer but I can't verify that. I mention this because I believe the CD I got is the 32bit version and that it should be sufficient but I figured I'd throw it out there in case someone else knew something.
When I iried to install bugzilla on my Ubuntu Lucid, I kept getting the following message. I have used "sudo apt-get --configure -a " and this is as far as I can get with the installation. Is there a way of first stopping the process and then removing Bugzilla, as it has locked the admin for apt.

Recently I have facing issues with updating or installing packages on my lucid. sudo apt-get update spits the following

Since upgrading to Lucid on two different PCs - one clean install and one upgrade I am experiencing a strange problem when printing from Firefox.Every printout from Firefox has a very pale yellow background on the whole print area.If I print to a pdf file rather than directly to the printer, then print the pdf file the problem does not occur. If I print to a postscript file, then print that the problem is present. No other applications I have tested have this problem (open office, gedit, google chrome)The printer is an HP Business Jet 2200 and I have tried all four offered drivers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 1537 Laptop with what lspci calls an "ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400" graphics card. Today I downloaded a daily image of Lucid, threw it on a USB drive, and booted it up. As I go to install the restricted driver for my graphics card, I notice that clicking on a panel item triggers the star burst effect. Come to find out that I can set desktop effects to "extra" and get smooth wobbly windows and everything.
Why are desktop effects working? I've always had to install FGLRX before, did the open source driver somehow get 3D support? Am I missing something? I almost feel like Compiz is performing better-- smoother, less tearing, etc.
Mentioned post - [URL]... I was/am also having the same problem that was described above and fixed it with either 'nomodeset' or 'i915.modeset=0', however, once I installed Gnome (part of the "Ultimate Server Guide"), I had one of the following happen...
-On Maverick, it would continue to boot in the console and running commands like startx would result in an error (no screen) -On Lucid, it stopped booting into the server all together (even with the above fixes). Once it boots into the server (about 6-7 seconds later), I'll see a bunch of reddish square artifacts on the screen and the HD activity will stop and the screen will remain on, but nothing will be displayed.
I've searched high and low for help on this and nothing seems to fix the problem. I consider myself very technical but my linux experience is only fair/good. Mostly from Unix experience in college and messing around with Ubuntu Desktop on my netbook.
install the latest real-time kernal into my current Lucid 10.04 distro? I know I could download and use Ubuntu Studio, but 1.7Gb is too much for my monthly download allowance to handle, especially when all I need it for is to address the major latency issues I have with Audacity.

There are several things going on here. * Mouse jumps to the side when I click on things when zoom is activated. * After an upgrade in Lucid,I'd start up the computer and everything would be very slow. Windows would open from the bottom and I could not click on anything cause when I tried, the mouse would jump to the side. Zoom slow and clunky. Mouse fireball always turned off. I'd uninstall and reinstall Compiz and that would fix it for about three days and then it's back to the same problems. I end up having to click no effects then click effects (middle button) and it looks for drivers, then I have to reactivate the mouse fireball. This happened every day,day in day out. So I installed Meerkat Sat. and it was fine till this morning, now the same problem has reasserted itself. What can I do? Do I need a new video card?

know about the apt-get install <package> command only to install in linux. However, when using this command to try install firebird 2.5 on my Lucid, it is not finding the package, and eventually I downloaded the tar file from firebird site, but after extracting I do not know how to proceed.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using
Code:
update-grub
and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
