View 2 RepliesI recently removed Windows from a family member's laptop (Gateway NV52) and installed Ubuntu on it. I started out with Ubuntu 10.04 since it was an LTS. She's been very happy with it until a few days ago when it started acting up and refused to load almost any site she frequently visited. I decided to back up her data and do a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) which is what I use. It installed fine, wireless works seamlessly as well.
However, Facebook refuses to load on any web browser (chrome, firefox, minefield, midori, etc.). It's only Facebook as well. The login page will appear but it will absolutely not login. I've tried it with several different accounts and it just flat out refuses.y other site loads fine and fast, and logs in fine, but facebook just doesn't seem to load.I really do not want to have to move her back to windows 7 as she's prone to viruses and Ubuntu is just flat out awesome at virtually everything, but for her, social networking is her primary way of connecting to friends and it's critical for her to have access to that site. It's really her make or break feature, and if Ubuntu can't do it then she doesn't want anything to do with it.
I've looked everywhere for a solution to this. I've tried changing DNS servers, disabling and re-enabling the wifi, clearing the cache and cookies, even down to resetting the router we use, all to no avail. The site loads fine on every other PC regardless of the OS, and I've run out of places to look.My experience with the Ubuntu community has been top notch so far, and I'm not shy of any terminal work that may be needed, nor am I shy of fiddling with anything.
After I had upgraded to 10.10, Firefox was at first running smoothly, but later it would no longer connect/open any given site. (could not connect to server). I the de-installed and new installed Firefox and it worked fine again for a while but then the same problem returned. I then completely removed Firefox and all packages pertaining to it, and then made a new install of the basic Firefox browser (same problem), then started adding one by one the other "Ubuntu" packages in synaptic for firefox, but the problem remains. I am currently using Chromium (which runs well and extremely fast) but I would like to have Firefox back

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just installed REKONQ 0.4.0 in my Ubuntu 10.04LTS and I am more than happy with it , firefox 3.6 crashed loads of times on mine (I have 3g mobile broadband) and had problems with rubbish download speeds.
What the hell happened at mozilla? Firefox was once my favorite browser but it isn't anymore, I hope Ubuntu 10.10 stick with Rekonq (once it reaches a stable version e.g 0.5.0). Has any one else experienced firefox crashing and slowdown? PS: To try Rekonq 0.4.0 just type the following into terminal:sudo apt-get install rekonq

On my wife's computer, she is having a problem that I can't duplicate on my own or figure out on hers. When she is logged into facebook, which she uses a fair amount to stay in contact with friends and family, after a certain amount of activity, clicking on links, etc. her screen develops an intermittent black band on the left hand side of the page which makes the page unreadable. This only happens in facebook and only with firefox; no problems so far in Opera or on other web sites. This happened in a previous installation and I thought a clean install would fix it, but I transferred her home directory and that brought the problem with it.

I have SSID broadcasts turned off on my wireless router (always a good choice for increased security). Even though I have put a check mark on "Connect Automatically" in my wireless network's configuration under SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > NETWORK CONNECTIONS, it will not connect automatically. I have to click on the network manager icon in the notification area of my desktop, and select "CONNECT TO HIDDEN WIRELESS NETWORK" in order to get online. Network manager does indeed connect automatically to APs that broadcast their SSID. (I don't want to enable SSID broadcasts on my router.)
In Fedora 13, Empathy 2.30.1-2 doesn't connect to Facebook Chat, giving just "Network error". Of course, I know that user must set his username in Facebook.
View 5 Replies View RelatedUpgraded to Lucid Beta2 on my 1000HE eee pc. Now unable to connect to wifi. Wifi searches, then decides it needs password. I enter the proper password and it searches again, but never connects. Here's the strange thing: Using latest 2.6.32.21-generic kernel, wifi will not connect. But, when I boot with 2.6.31.20-generic, wifi works fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 a few days ago. I do not intend to stick with a WEP secured network.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi have added a vpn connection on my Lucid desktop machine, but every time i try and connect, it fails. I also have the same, identical vpn connection on my karmic install on my laptop. everything works perfectly on Karmic, but Lucid is having problems. I have followed identical steps for creating the vpn connection on both machines: vpn connections can be made in 2 ways, the first is through the network manager, but trying to connect through the nm-applet returns an error about vpn failing to connect and "no valid vpn secrets".
I suspect this is at the root of the problem. The only way for my Lucid machine to successfully connect through the command line is if I run the openvpn command under sudo.
I installed lucid netbook edition on my friends netbook and I am unable to connect to their wireless. The netbook is dual booting with xp and while in xp it is able to connect but once i boot into lucid it is unable to.

After installing Lucid, I noticed that my Ralink RT2860 card would not connect to my home network using WPA2 despite the network being visible and of good strength. So I followed the guide at [url] in order to install the newest Ralink drivers.
After installation, same issue. That is, the card will connect to my a/b/g/n network if I leave it unprotected, but it will not connect to the same network if switch it to WPA2. After being given the passphrase, the wireless icon on the indicator applet shows that it is trying to connect, but after awhile it fails. Does anyone know why the built-in driver and also the official Ralink driver are no good for WPA2 in Ubuntu 10.4 for my RT2860 card?
Linksys WUSB54GP Not Found, Can't Connect to Wireless - 10.04 Lucid Lynx
I am having a problem setting up my wireless on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) on my desktop computer using a Linksys Wireless-G Portable USB Adapter WUSB54GP.
The wireless has run fine on my Thinkpad X60s laptop running Lucid and with my desktop and the same USB adapter in Karmic (9.10). When I installed Lucid as an upgrade on the desktop, I could not see the adapter listed at all and could not connect wirelessly to the internet.
if I need to install drivers, edit a file, or do something else to get this working I couldn't find anything useful to actually solve my problem after searching for a while.
This should be all the important desktop system specs: Linksys Wireless-G Portable USB Adapter WUSB54GP -- not found; can't connect to wireless internet

I updated to the latest version of Ubuntu and before I could connect to the network "krafft" that is a WPA2-Personal protected network. If I go into Windows and change security to none I can connect with Ubuntu, but not when it's protected. After a bit of time logged in without network a dialogue pops up and looks almost like this :but "Focus" is replaced with "krafft" and the password is something else.I know that the password is right and the network worked perfectly before update.I got an USB wireless network receiver from D-Link and the chipste is ralink rt2870.In the previous Ubuntu distribution you had to write "blacklist rt2800usb" in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but it won't work with or without that blacklist. When I updated I saw some message about the network manager(at least I think so) so maybe the problem is in that.

I can PING my ISP from Terminal, though, and I have the machine set up for dual boot with Windows 7 and Firefox works fine under Windows.

I've been the las 4 days setting up my first VPN (OpenVPN bridged). The server is up and running OK but when I try to connect I've got this message in the client log.

I have a private server which I stream media from, but since I've installed VMware running Windows 7 and set up Windows to used a bridged connection, so I can access the network drives in Windows. Now that I have done that, I cannot connect to my home server unless I have VMware running.
I only want windows running when I need it, but I need access to my server at all times.
