Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVIDA Drivers Not Installing In Lucid Or Meerkat?

There are several things going on here. * Mouse jumps to the side when I click on things when zoom is activated. * After an upgrade in Lucid,I'd start up the computer and everything would be very slow. Windows would open from the bottom and I could not click on anything cause when I tried,the mouse would jump to the side. Zoom slow and clunky. Mouse fireball always turned off. I'd uninstall and reinstall Compiz and that would fix it for about three days and then it's back to the same problems. I end up having to click no effects then click effects (middle button) and it looks for drivers,then I have to reactivate the mouse fireball. This happened every day,day in day out. So I installed Meerkat Sat. and it was fine till this morning,now the same problem has reasserted itself.What can I do? Do I need a new video card?

Thought I'd put this together based on what I just did as it's hard to find a place where you get complete info in one place for this topic.
Not taking any credit as it's just piecing together stuff found on the net.
Of course this is for my specific hardware and system so YMMV:
- Palit Sonic GT 240 card
- Lucid 10.04.1 64-bit
- Intel DG33FB board and E7200 CPU
- LG monitor L194WT at 1440x900 res
Reason for choosing the latest NVidia drivers instead of the ones available from the System > Administration > Hardware Drivers option is that the latest ones contain specific fixes for my card, that are not available in the others.
Prerequisites:
All of the following is based on a freshly installed 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 system. Some actions may need modification if you have already been tinkering with Nvidia drivers.
1. Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if any. The default clean install of 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 doesn't create this file so unless you have generated and modified the xorg.conf file for your specific needs, skip this.
2. Install the following packages

And paste the output of that in the command above so you get, say

3. Remove the following packages using Synaptic's 'Completely Remove' option
- nvidia-173-modaliases
- nvidia-96-modaliases
- nvidia-current-modaliases
- nvidia-common
4. Create a new text file disable-nouveau.conf in the directory /etc/modprobe.d/ with the following contents

5. Download the latest NVidia drivers applicable to your card from here:[url]
6. Save the downloaded file (e.g. NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.29.run in my case) to an easily accessible location like your home folder. Make this file executable by running, say

7. Check that the driver was correctly downloaded.

8. Run Update Manager, Check for updates and Apply any found
Installation:
1. Restart and choose the recovery option from the Grub options list.
2. Choose the Root Shell option in the list of options presented subsequently.
3. At the root shell run the following

If you skip this, the driver installer will inform you of the need to do this.
4. This will present you with a login prompt. Login with your admin username and password.
5. Navigate to the folder where the driver installer is present and run it, like

7. Say Yes to installing the 32-bit Open GL drivers.
8. I think you need to say Yes/ Accept once more time to initiate the driver installation.
9. Once the driver is installed it will ask you whether it should configure xorg.conf for you, say Yes. This will create the xorg.conf file if not present in your system and modify an existing one if present.
10. Back at the prompt, shutdown the system

11. Restart and use the normal startup option in the Grub options list, if all goes well you should see your beautiful desktop.

I just switched from xp on a HP s7613w (gforce 6150 le) to ubuntu 9-10. I can not see anything over 800x600 to select unless i enable the nvida drivers. There are three choices and i have tried them all, After i activate them it will let me select the 1024x768 that i need but the screen is garbled. There will be garbled text till i run the curser over the text then it will stratin up. The buttons on a page will move down and to the right a little bit when i put the cursor over them. When i uninstall the nvida drivers everything goes back to 800x600 and the screen is fine. My monitor is a Sceptre X20 is that helps. I am new to linux so please use easy to follow instructions if you can help me. I tried pc linux and it did the same thing. I like this version better so i am going to try to get it to work.

I am posting this to see if anyone else has had an issue with Vmware Workstation 7.1 using unity mode with a Linux Host. The issue I am having is when I try to move a window from my virtual machine in unity mode the screen crashes and then disappears. Everything seems to work while not in unity mode. I have tried various thing like disabling 3d mode in VMware, disabling various KDE effects. I only have these problems with a dual monitor setup, if I switch to a single monitor everything works just fine.

OK, I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and since upgrading to the 256.35 drivers from the ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates ppa the ambiance and radiance themes have gone funny. For example the scroll bars and buttons are now very white and when hovering over the time it goes a very bright colour. If I return to the 195 drivers the problem goes, but the 256 drivers have better video vdpau performance. The problem occurs regardless of whether compiz is enabled. The login screen is also affected. My gfx card is an 8600m gs.

I am experiencing difficulty with the screen resolution on my Asus X51L laptop. Currently I am using Lucid and everything works perfectly but when I attempted to dual boot Meerkat the screen went out of sync. I have tried Meerkat both as a live CD and a full install and in both instances the display does not fill the screen. I attach a photo of the display in the hope that it will assist.
When I use the laptop at home I attach it to a 21 inch screen and everything works a treat and strangely enough when working with Meerkat and displaying it on the large screen it will properly display. This only confuses me further. I am due shortly to go for a trip and as the display is not correct am not prepared to show Ubuntu as being improperly displayed to others.

is it good to just upgrade Ubuntu 10.09 to 10.10 but not clean install?I've installed so many applications so far in Lucid and if I clean install it, I've been thinking of reinstall all the applications back is a tiring process.

check this out and let me know if you have any ideas or a better way to install this silly thing. At the moment I'm using 185 drivers and I would not mind upgrading to 190 or even 195 versions of the driver.
My video card is a Nvidia 9800 GT 512mb.1- Add repositories to ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 karmic koala

I killed windows and jumped to Ubuntu after thinking about it. I know windows systems very well and been on the PC starting in the DOS age.
First off. I think I have everything going. I had issues with the display and sound. I got the sound working thanks to these forums...but I have "tossed" some code in the command window that I have no clue what it does or if it worked.
I would like to know if my nVIDIA cards are working correctly. My goal is to use WINE or Play On Linux and get World of Warcraft up and going... along with MS OFFICE 2010.
Im still learning the system and where what is so please go slow. What Do I need to do to get system information for help? ANd to check to make sure drivers are loaded and working?

I have upgraded this system 3 or 4 times from Lucid to Meerkat without any problems. After a nasty update to my Natty installation I have re-installed Lucid and am upgrading to Meerkat, then on to Natty again. However when I try to upgrade I am getting the error below.

I have a nVIDIA Geforce 8500 GT on my Ubuntu system.and have the latest 260.19.36 driver installed.the Mplayer was from SVN checkout also the latest version.but the configure script from mplayer can't detect VDPAU on my system. just give me the output like this
Check VDPAU .... No If I force Enable the VDPAU. the make process won't be successful.just googled, most article that I can find about Mplayer and VDPAU is out of date.

I've had an annoying couple of days beginning with a win7 reinstall on a dual boot system (win7/10.10) that wiped out grub. I reinstalled ubuntu (10.04) in the hopes of just getting grub2 back up, but that failed and I ended up with a new install of 10.04 on the partition and a happily functioning and coexisting win7/ubuntu wit grub working the way that I wanted.
However, I'm traveling, and tried to reinstall the wifi drivers manually. I think I messed something up and installed the 10.10 drivers onto the 10.04 system (I only had a 10.04 disk and the pendrive usb method failed). Anyway, when I tried to (re)install the drivers from the cd, I got the error: a later driver has already been installed. However, the problem at hand is as follows: now my win7 install doesn't see any of the wireless networks around.So, I think I somehow fraked the wifi card.

I have ubuntu on a Vaio VGN-A290 with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 M10 graphics card. I I installed the Eternal Lands client but it keeps crashing on me. Upon crashing a massage told me that I should make sure the video drivers are up to date. I then went into system --> Administration --> Hardware drivers and it says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system." So my question is how do I install a driver for the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 M10?

I have installed Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 RC in my PC, everything works fine, but after install Nvidia proprietary Graphics driver it boot up on a blank screen (I can hear the login sounds, etc) but screen is absolutely black.
I try to login in recovery mode and check if something is wrong but nothing happens (even adding noveau driver to a blacklist (editing grub)) Now I have re installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 and works fine but I would like to install the 10.10 version, since I have this inconvenience, I cant do it.

since installing nVidia graphic drivers I can't adjust volume using volume button nor using volume keys. The volume icon has 3 horizontal lines like Ubuntu couldn't find audio device. Morover when I try to run pulseaudio there is "/home/chris is not ours" message.
Despite these facts audio is playing and I can adjust volume using alsamixer, but it is extremely not comfortable to enter console each time I want to volume up/down..

I'm still getting used to the system. I've been able to install a couple of packages like Disk Manager and Firefox, and was able to mount my ntfs drive. I've only learned some basic terminal commands, but I'm managing ok so far. That is until I looked into what was involved in installing the video drivers I need for my Nvidia 8400 GS card. (ouch!) I know there are a lot of threads out there for same or similar issues, but nothing I found was working for me until, by sheer chance, I found this very simple solution on the Fedora forums. Too elegant not to share.Environment:Ubuntu 10.10nVidia GeForce 5500Samsung SyncMaster 225BWUsing DVI cable (in case it matters)Issue:After installing the proprietary nVidia drivers, the screen resolution was no longer the correct native resolution of the display. In my case specifically, the nVidia X Server Settings utility was detecting the maximum supported screen resolution was 1280x1024 while my display's native resolution is 1680x1050.Solution:Open a Terminal window.Make a backup copy of the original xorg.conf file. This is just good form any time you are making config file customizations.

I have been using ubuntu for 2 years now and iam very happy with its day to day improvement.Recently i found an old TV tuner card(STB-TVFM) in my friends house and plugged it on the PCI slot in my motherboard. Assuming that i dont need special drivers to use it,I directly downladed "TV TIME" to watch my favourite tv shows. But now the software says "NO Signal".Now i think that the software is not seeing the PCI card.

I work at a television station and we recently purchased a System76 Meerkat ION with the intended purpose of using the HDMI out port for broadcast purposes. We have an existing AJA HA5 box which is capable of converting HDMI to HD-SDI (HD-SDI being the baseband standard in professional broadcasting).
The converter is only willing to accept the following values:
1920 x 1080 @ 29.97
1280 x 720 @ 59.94
I am wondering if it is possible to manually configure Xorg.conf (or whatever file is being edited by NVIDIA X Server Settings) to tell the HDMI output to only produce the latter resolution (1280 x 720).

I just had the idea of going back to command line music players and mp3blaster is what that came to my mind. I am running Kubuntu 10.10 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop with the default kernel. In an archived thread I read
mp3blaster -s /dev/dsp
would do the trick. But since all sound devices in my current laptop seem to be listed under /dev/snd as pcmC0D0p etc. I tried using,
mp3blaster -s /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
and this gave a sound device control error.
Just did some digging around and saw that I didn't have any oss modules running. Are they the culprits? If not how would I make mp3blaster use my current devices else do I need to reconfigure my kernel to have the oss modules?

I'm having an issue when ever I play any type of media with any media player everything starts acting buggy. Buggy such as I can't click anything nor will hot keys work properly. Seems as if everything is somewhat frozen but the courser can still move. This only happens when I play a media file. Using Maverick Meerkat!

Running Meerkat 10.10 with an ATI X1950 PRO, and with no visual enhancements I get page tearing on minimising windows and things like that.
If I turn on even basic visual effects, then Maverick slows down and becomes quite unresponsive. There are noticeably long delays between closing windows or clicking on a menu etc.
Is this because the open source ATI driver does not support hardware acceleration on my X1950 yet?
Is there any hope for me? Recent versions of Ubuntu seems to have taken a step back in that respect. I remember 8.04 worked really well!
