Ubuntu :: Installing Skype On 8.04

Installing Skype on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
I noticed that many people, as well as me, want to install skype on 8.04. I found many tutorials with lots of dependences and terminal commands. So i found a better solution how to install.
1. Go to Skype's download site: Latest 2.1 version - click here
2. Download Static (5th type, little skype cube), i didn't test any others so maybe some of them work
3. Save .tar.bz2 (26,3 MB)
4. Extract
5. Open the folder and run Skype.exe
6. Done, just type your username and password
I'm using this version, i had no problems with chat and calling. Also options and pop-ups work.

I have tried installing skype through synaptic package manager, downloading from website through software centre and also manually using apt-get and dpkg. All I get is the same error - hash sum mismatch so file could not be retrieved. have tried the apt-get update and makes same error. not entirely certain what the --fix missing does or how to run it.
Get:1 [URL] [20.2MB]
Fetched 20.2MB in 6min 31s (51.5kB/s)
Failed to fetch [URL] Hash Sum mismatch
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing? I just done successful install for Opera and Thunderbird. just this skype thing I can't seem to sort!

I've just bought a new laptop (Acer 3810T - which has a "Core 2 Solo Processor) - so I have installed Linux for the first time in my life.... Ubuntu 9.10-desktop-amd64.iso - so far so good, I'm very very impressed and the operating system seems to be working fine. I assume that I have chosen correctly the AMD64 version then.
Fastforward to Skype installation, and I download the version (skype-ubuntu-intrepid_2.1.0.81-1_amd64.deb) - which is the best match as far as I can tell from Skype's website. However when I come to install it, I get the follwoing error: Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: lib32stdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-21)

I was noticed the below error message when I was installing the SKYPE linux version downloaded from the official web site of SKYPE. Actually I have already installed the QT4 with the highest version correctly even I can used the QT UI for programming now. But still I faced the problem of lack of libraries afterwards.
[root@IT60 LinuxSoftware]# rpm -ivh skype*.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
qt4-x11 >= 4.2 is needed by skype-2.1.0.47-fc10.i586
Bump: The skype is running fine by the below link. [URL]. This version needn't those QT libraries again? It's strange. In before I was using the version called "skype-2.1.0.47-fc10.i586.rpm" that also downloaded from SKYPE official website. But it's not working as I mentioned above.

i have been able to get my webcam working in Skype by doing the LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype command and installing v4l2ucp but it doesn't stick. So next time i boot it is like i didn't do anything. I have read a few things on it on this forum and i am not sure what to do next. Is there a conflict with my nvidia video card? I only installed Ubuntu 10 a week ago i think.

I downloaded skype 2.2 .deb package on the skype website and tried to install it via sudo dpkg -i skype-debian_2.2.0.25-1_i386.deb and got the following errors:
[code]...
What does the error mean? I am guessing I have a faulty package. old skype can't be used due to segmentation fault error, so I am really hoping for the new upgrade to solve my skype problem.

I'm getting the following errors when I try to start skype:
[code]...
I installed Skype from the slacky.it package HERE. Everything was fine, all was stable and rosey, until I installed Inkscape today. I hadn't even noticed it wasn't running until someone got a hold of me and said they were trying to get a hold of me. When I went to fire it up, thinking that I had somehow inadvertently closed it, it sprang right up for just a second and then was gone. Same thing - three times in row. So I tried starting if from the command line and got that error. I can start it from the comman line as root, with the following error:
[code]...
The deps for Inkscape that I installed, and in the following order, were all from the 13.1 repo, and the ones I didn't already have installed were:

I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

I just recently purchased a 3g dongle for my netbook. Everything seems to be working fine until I discovered this strange problem. I cant seem to text via skype, it doesnt go through. I testet the skype test call service and voice works fine, audio and mic. I have tried to google and search forums but no luck. I have before used skype on my netbook with my cellphone as a hot spot and it worked without problem but it doesnt have the same provider - different sim cards in phone and dongle.

I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.

During the install of 10.10 yesterday, while watching the slide show, I noticed the claim that Skype is supported under 10.10. But when I searched for the skype package in the Software Centre I don't find it. I find a reference to something called a Skype API wrapper for python - which sounds like the sort of thing you find lying the ground outside the reptile house at your local zoo after a successful attack on a hamburger-eating visitor. Surely that can't be it? Where do I find the Skype package?

I am trying to install skype for Ubuntu. I downloaded it (as you do in Windows) since on software center I find only Skype Internet Telephony. The latest version of Skype is for Ubuntu 10.04. Is that why I can't get Skype on my PC? If I can't get Skype, is there any client? (like empathy for MSN?)

Is it possible to install Skype in Ubuntu 9.10? I don't find it listed in Synaptic Package Manager. I did install skysentials, skytools, and skytools-modules-8.3. That does not apparently install the program itself. At least I can't find it.
