i have been able to get my webcam working in Skype by doing the LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype command and installing v4l2ucp but it doesn't stick. So next time i boot it is like i didn't do anything. I have read a few things on it on this forum and i am not sure what to do next. Is there a conflict with my nvidia video card? I only installed Ubuntu 10 a week ago i think.

i just installed ubuntu netbook remix 10.04.1 on an aspire one 532h netbook, and everything works great except i cant get the mic to work with skype. i know the mic is working correctly because i tried it in sound recorder and was able to record and playback my voice.all sound levels are where they should be, and everything seems to be in order. i'm using the latest beta of skype also. i installed pavucontrol but that didn't do anything.because the mic is working, i'm beginning to think it may be a problem with skype.

I went into the NVIDIA X Server Settings page and changed it to my preferred setting of 1152x864. Two days ago connected my laptop and TV, in order to use the TV as a second monitor, to watch a football match (I only have IPTV). Only thing I had to do was to go to System -> Preferences -> Sound and switch (in the hardware tab) my Internal Audio Hardware from Analog Stereo Duplex to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input.
So after the match I switched it back to Analog Stereo Duplex and proceeded to skype with my girlfriend. Problem was, the mic stopped working. It works just fine in 'Input' tab of my sound preferences, as well as in sound recorder. She, in skype, heard nothing but static. Test call doesn't work either. Now I've done all the usual stuff, Skype isn't allowed to automatically adjust mixer levels and my mic is already boosted. I've reinstalled skype and everything. I'm running out of ideas.

I'm about to ditch Freenas as my NAS software and make it an Ubuntu server box. The mainboard is an Asus AT3ION-T dual core Atom board. Freenas runs happily from USB stick. I have no optical device to install Ubuntu from and would like to install Ubuntu Server to a USB stick.

Sound recording from build-in mic was fine in skype and cheese after i installed UNR in my Acer Aspire One 110L in early December last year.
But somehow, i just realized that my sound recording was not functioning when i use skype this morning.
(i don't know since when this problem occur as i never use skype and cheese in past few weeks and i did update a few time from synaptic and install ubuntu-boot kernel)
just now i remove ubuntu-boot and reinstall the 2.6.31-17-generic kernel and run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio
but skype and cheese still does not record from build in microphone but only record from external microphone.
One weird thing is Sound recorder do record from both the build-in mic and external mic.
i tried "parec -r test.wav" and "parec -p test.wav" and it also record from both mic.
Anyone know how to configure my netbook so that the internal mic work on skype?
I am running Xubuntu Lucid 10.04 on a Sony Vaio. I recently dropped $100 on a Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, on the recommendation on the ubuntu wiki [URL].. that it would "work perfectly" in Skype. In Skype, it did nothing. No Audio, no video, light wouldn't even come on. Essentially a $100 dollar paperweight. I really think someone should correct this misleading information on the wiki.
I followed the kludge listed here [URL].. to get the video to work. By executing Skype with the shell script listed in the first post, I could get the video test to work, but no audio, and when I tried to call someone, when I turned on video, Skype quit suddenly. For the record, yes, I unmuted the device in the Sound Mixer in the top right corner.
Later on, I tested it with guvcview, and the cam worked perfectly in that program. It's only Skype that doesn't know what to do with it. When I execute Skype in Terminal I get the following output repeating over and over again:

I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed skype 2.1 beta 2 (the deb file) from the skype website, but the only option I see under Sound Devices -> Recording is "PulseAudio Server (local)" This doesn't work for me, as the skype test calls don't actually record anything I say. I use skype a lot and FINALLY got it working under karmic, but I needed to upgrade to lucid and now it's broken.
When I open Sound preferences and look at the Applications section, Skype shows up as recording when I run its test call... but no sound is recorded? How is it possible that my sound card picks up something recording but doesn't actually record it when I'm in skype?
I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.
It's just about to make a USB stick boot my ubuntu 10.10. First,I have tried several flash drives. I have downloaded and checkedsum several images, including Mint 10 ( sort of Ubuntu ), I have used UNiversal USB, LinuxLiveUSB creator,Unetbootin and the native program inside Ubuntu. All the time I have the same problem : "line 7: can't open /dev/sr0 no medium found" I have disabled by default the floppy disc from BIOS. I suspect that some line has to be modified. I am not an advanced user of Linux. But I would like to have ubuntu booting from a stick flash drive.

how do I blow those others away? I want them erased aand don't want them in grub or "installed around", rather, I want it "installed over" them. Also, the "Linux Other" is the USB stick. Is it a problem to have that?
Installing Skype on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
I noticed that many people, as well as me, want to install skype on 8.04. I found many tutorials with lots of dependences and terminal commands. So i found a better solution how to install.
1. Go to Skype's download site: Latest 2.1 version - click here
2. Download Static (5th type, little skype cube), i didn't test any others so maybe some of them work
3. Save .tar.bz2 (26,3 MB)
4. Extract
5. Open the folder and run Skype.exe
6. Done, just type your username and password
I'm using this version, i had no problems with chat and calling. Also options and pop-ups work.
I used unetbootin (on another machine) to put the ubuntu 10.04 minimal amd64 .iso onto a usb stick. I used it to install a minimal system on a new 64-bit laptop (dual booting with Windows 7). Now, when I turn on the machine I get my choice of OS. When I pick Ubuntu, I get a blinking cursor, the harddrive is accessed. Then the cursor disappears, the harddrive is quiet, and nothing else happens.

I am stuck on the screen which says 'Ubuntu 10.10' and has four little orange dots flashing as if it is loading. It has been like this for over 20 minutes now. Is this unusual or is it normal? View 1 Replies View RelatedI copied a couple of small files to it, and it seemed to copy fine, I was sure to unmount before removing, but those two files ended up being corrupted and although they appear on the stick, they can't be opened any more. Almost all the other files on the stick are still fine apart from one or two other ones, which definitely used to be openable but now are not. So perhaps it's got some bad blocks or something? So I hunted around for ways to check the stick, I'm guessing maybe it can mark those bits as bad and keep on using the other bits maybe?
I search, and I find fsck, so I run that on the stick and it doesn't seem to find anything, or complain about errors or anything, so I figure it's done nothing. (The stick is formatted as VFAT and can be read by both linux and windows). I remount the stick and see a new, extra file there, a deleted pdf from a few weeks ago apparently recovered by fsck. No problem, I delete it. But I guess that means fsck did do something after all. Then I unmount and remove the stick, and plug it in again just to check that things are working. And here's where it gets weird.
When I remount the stick, the files which were there before are no longer there. Instead, there's just a single png file, apparently from 2006, which I haven't seen since then I don't think. And I can open that file fine. Bizarre, where are my files gone? I unmount the stick, remount it, and all my files are back again! What the? Finding this curious, I run gparted on the stick to see if there is maybe more than one partition, and some glitch caused it to mount some hidden partition or something (I'm stabbing wildly in the dark, as you see). But gparted says that the whole drive is "unallocated", and fdisk seems to be saying it hasn't got a partition table. So I guess I've got a few questions coming out of this:
- Is this a problem that the stick doesn't seem to be partitioned? Should I partition it with gparted?
- Is there a way to do a proper check of the disk to check for bad blocks/sectors/clusters/whatever they're called, and mark them? fsck seemed to finish too quick to have really checked things properly.
- Is this stick dying and in need of replacement?
