Ubuntu :: Can't Get Skype On PC?
May 10, 2011
I am trying to install skype for Ubuntu. I downloaded it (as you do in Windows) since on software center I find only Skype Internet Telephony. The latest version of Skype is for Ubuntu 10.04. Is that why I can't get Skype on my PC? If I can't get Skype, is there any client? (like empathy for MSN?)

I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

Does anybody know a good option for a Skype based solution that works on Linux? I have a real problem with the current Linux version as it is a crappy, buggy and downgraded version of the Windows equivalent.

I just recently purchased a 3g dongle for my netbook. Everything seems to be working fine until I discovered this strange problem. I cant seem to text via skype, it doesnt go through. I testet the skype test call service and voice works fine, audio and mic. I have tried to google and search forums but no luck. I have before used skype on my netbook with my cellphone as a hot spot and it worked without problem but it doesnt have the same provider - different sim cards in phone and dongle.

I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.

During the install of 10.10 yesterday, while watching the slide show, I noticed the claim that Skype is supported under 10.10. But when I searched for the skype package in the Software Centre I don't find it. I find a reference to something called a Skype API wrapper for python - which sounds like the sort of thing you find lying the ground outside the reptile house at your local zoo after a successful attack on a hamburger-eating visitor. Surely that can't be it? Where do I find the Skype package?

Is it possible to install Skype in Ubuntu 9.10? I don't find it listed in Synaptic Package Manager. I did install skysentials, skytools, and skytools-modules-8.3. That does not apparently install the program itself. At least I can't find it.

Basically the webcam shows up in the list but clicking test does nothing, it just sits there. The webcam works perfectly in cheese.
I used too solve this problem by doing the following
type
Code:
Quote:
sudo gedit /usr/local/bin/skype
and paste the following 2 line
[Code].....
But this doesn't seem too work now, not since I reinstalled ubuntu.
NOTE: I am using the 64bit release.

Installing Skype on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
I noticed that many people, as well as me, want to install skype on 8.04. I found many tutorials with lots of dependences and terminal commands. So i found a better solution how to install.
1. Go to Skype's download site: Latest 2.1 version - click here
2. Download Static (5th type, little skype cube), i didn't test any others so maybe some of them work
3. Save .tar.bz2 (26,3 MB)
4. Extract
5. Open the folder and run Skype.exe
6. Done, just type your username and password
I'm using this version, i had no problems with chat and calling. Also options and pop-ups work.

i use U 9.10 and upon checking the software centre i realised that skype is not listed! does this mean i can't use skype with linux ? isn't this one of the major problems people face with linux in general ? i mean the lack of availability of hardware drivers and specialised softwares ?

I have been trying to get skype working on 10.04 x64. I succeeded last night by using a pulseaudio config file to stop autospawning, but this kills volume management on many other apps as well. I just wrote a quick skype startup script to kill pulseaudio when skype is opened, and replace it when skype is closed, but I would rather have an autospawning exception for skype only. Is there a way to tell pulse audio not to autospawn for skype related processes only?

I'm literally about a week into using Linux, and I'm using Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Now, pardon me, I'm new to this, so I won't be using any kind of correct terminology or anything.I've been having so many problems, but I'll ignore most of them for now. I want to download Skype, really bad. However, I downloaded it, and tried installing it through... er, Ubuntu Software Center. Yeah. And it went to almost finished but never completely finished installing. I had it sitting for about five hours, and nothing.that's pretty much what it looked like for a few hours.I'm kind of desperate and really frustrated.(Also, if anyone wants to help me now that I have your attention, it takes for-freaking-ever to switch in between applications. Is there a reason for this, or is it just because I'm on a netbook with not much memory?)

I can't get video to work in Skype on Maverick. The sound works, and the correct device (Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX) is selected in skype, but when I click on "Test" in the video box in Skype, nothing happens. My webcam works fine with Cheese, just not in Skype. My computer is a desktop Gateway DX4820.
