Jul 28, 2010My laptop had 1 hard disk, partitioned as follows:C: (NTFS), on which Windows XP was installed.D: (NTFS), on which I stored my personal data.Recently, I bought a new hard disk, and divided it into two partitions: An NTFS partition (to store personal data), and another partition on which I installed Linux (Debian Lenny).I want my systo act as follows:While booting the system: if I select to boot from the first hard disk, Windows XP loads. Else, if I select to boot from the second hard disk, Linux loads.In other words, I want the MBR of each disk to point at the corresponding OS.

Oct 17, 2010So I configured a couple of hard drives as JBOD in the BIOS. The boot up screen says they're in JBOD configuration. However when I boot into Ubuntu 10.10. I still see them as 2 separate disks and I mount them separately and write to each separately. I never used JBOD before but I would assume it would be like a RAID where the disks would show up as one volume.

Apr 5, 2011I want to set up my PC so that I have Windows 7 installed on one hard drive and Ubuntu Studio installed on a completely separate hard drive. I currently have both hard drives installed in my PC and the larger one (640GB) has Windows 7 installed and is currently taking up that entire drive. My other hard drive (160GB) has a wubi install of Ubuntu 10.10 on it so it shows up on the Windows boot menu. What I want to do is wipe the smaller hard drive and install Ubuntu Studio on it and have it show up in the boot menu just like my wubi install does.
I need to know things like:
1. When I install Ubuntu Studio, do I install the boot loader to the MBR of the hard drive I'm installing it on?
2. How exactly do I add Ubuntu Studio to the Windows boot loader?
General :: Install Linux On Separate (but Partly Full) Hard Disk
Jul 31, 2010This question is somewhat open ended, so I'll describe the specific issue, what I want to accomplish in general, and what I tried to do. It'd be a little long, but hopefully not too daunting.For quite a while my approach to multi-OS boots has been to install each OS to a separate disk. When I want to boot a specific OS I change the boot drive in the BIOS. I find this convenient for several reasons, but mostly because I don't get boot manager conflicts. If I remove a disk or change the OS on it, this doesn't affect the booting of other OS's.
Note that when I say multi-OS, this meant until now multiple versions of Windows. I've occasionally tried some linux distros on VirtualBox, but now I want to do a full install, and see if I can use it as a main OS. (What prompted this was the recent release of Wine 1.2 and the fact that my new job doesn't involve any Direct3D or DDI work. I've always been partial to the open source movement, but I'm also fine with Windows and never before felt I could make the move without losing key abilities). My plan was (still is, if I can get it to work) to use Linux for everyday e-mail, web browsing and such, play Windows games over Wine, and install Windows 7 in VirtualBox for Windows development.I currently have two disks, one with my main Vista x64 installation, and the other with a Vista x86 installation which I used for my previous job and I no longer need. This is the disk I want to use for the Linux installation. It has a lot of partitions but quite a bit of free space (since I copied a 80GB disk and 250GB disk into a 500GB disk and haven't taken advantage of the extra space).My first choice of distro was Linux Mint, since it's known to be friendly to new users, and I like the software installer on it. I installed Linux Mint in the past in VirtualBox, and the latest version also installed fine, and I found installation instructions explaining how to provide my own partitions, but the installation failed during the "configuring hardware" stage. If you're interested, more details are available in this thread on the Linux Mint forums. I didn't get any reply to that thread.
I thought then that I'd try openSUSE 11.3. The live CD looked usable enough, but when I tried to install I couldn't tell how to make sure that I don't get a boot manager which will try to give me access to the Windows versions on the disks. I don't want this, and what I'm really afraid of is that an install will screw the booting of Vista x64 on the other disk (which, granted, I can disconnect for the install, but I'd rather not). At that point I decided to post a question here.So hopefully you understand what I want to achieve. I don't much care which Linux distro I install, but I'd rather have one which gives me as much usability out of the box (or easily installable) as possible.
Ubuntu Servers :: Installing LTSP When Using A Separate DHCP And TFTP?
Mar 17, 2010I want to install Ubuntu LTSP on top of an already existing system. However, I want to use a different DHCP and TFTP server. Do I simply just install 'ltsp-server-standalone' with apt and run 'sudo ltsp-build-client', stop the DHCP and TFTP server and stop them from starting automatically? Would I then just copy over the pxelinux.cfg/default file from /var/lib/tftpboot along with the initrd.img and vmlinuz images to the TFTP server?
Edit: Do I need to actually copy the whole /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp directory over to the TFTP server?

Mar 15, 2009I have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?

Added an SSD (dev/sdc) and decided to move some less often changed directories there. Started with /usr and /boot, leaving / on a primary in the first drive, for now. All started ok, and my changed fstab mounted the right ones, and the system works.
However, grub is actually using the original /boot on / on sda1. I cannot see any way to change this. (Which makes it sorta hard to update the kernel

Okay, since it has two choices, I tried to tell it which one to use. But, grub> root (hd2,5) does nothing.
Disk /dev/sda:
what I seem to recall, grub doesn't care about the boot flag on the disk. Nor does it care about primary vs. logical (except GNU doc says "makeactive" only works on a primary?).
The GNU doc also indicates that it looks for a directory /boot on the partition, so if you're mounting a partition as /boot, it also needs to contain a /boot directory under it. Tried that, but no change.
Is my problem the logical partition? Does that prevent "grub> root" from changing it? I'm afraid to wipe out the old /boot and find that I can't start up.

Feb 17, 2010I have been running Ubuntu 9.10 and Win XP Professional as a dual boot system, with each OS on its own HDD, smoothly and seamlessly since the release of 9.10. Yesterday one of my kids got a video file from a friend and it had a virus along with it. Long story short, in the process of trying to repair it Windows shuddered it last agonizing breath.
Now I have to re-install Windows because some of the programs the schools make them use require Windows. How do I go about doing this without damaging my Ubuntu installation? Will re-installing on a second drive affect GRUB?
General :: No Hard Disk Drives When Installing Ubuntu
Dec 29, 2010I'm not a stranger to Ubuntu Linux and I was using it for a couple of months with no problems until last week when I turned my computer on and it would go no further than the boot screen and it said 'Error- Insert System Disk'. So I inserted the system disk (Ubuntu Linux 10.something) and after waiting 10 minutes for it to load up it said 'Installation failed, desktop session will now be run and you can try installing again'. So I tried installing whilst on a desktop session and I eventually got to step 4 of 8 and it lets me go no further. This is what step 4 of 8 is:http://oi54.tinypic.com/mx2g79.jpg
And so I cant choose any disks or partitions and so it wont let me go any further. How do I create one? I'm currently running on desktop sessions and they take forever to load up and I cant watch videos or anything because there is no flash. By the way please try and explain to me really simply because I am quite dopey and I wont be able to understand posh complicated computer words.

Jul 9, 2010I burned a Fedora ISO onto a CD and I love it. Now, I want to add it as a dual-boot to my hard disk. I divided Drive C into two (formatted) partitions one labeled Linux.During an attemped installation, I was able to find (thru "edit") the partition called "Linux." But one of the next questions threw me: it asked for a "mount point."I have no idea what that means (and yes I have readthe guide onthis site).
ACTUALLY... what I need to do is simply install into a partition I already set up.I don't find an option for that within the Fedora installation menu.I have 20 years of experience with Windows and try to keep up with everything, but Linux is totally new to me, so I don't understand the terminology.I also have been trying to find how to create a dual-boot situation from the hard disk, where XP is still my default (for now, at least).

I can burn again but do i need to burn in a certain format or as an iso? also i do not know how to get linux to read a cd or mount it?

I have loaded the newest iso in daemon tools and it asks me if i want to install it in windows, or restart my computer to do a full install. i wish to do neither. i want to install a full copy to my other drive with the virtual cd drive. I have found alot of help dealing with installing it on the same drive as windows or something that would require a floppy drive. this task seems like it would be alot simpler than installing on the same drive, buy maybe not. Aug 9, 2011I saved wubi.exe to c: and when running wubi, I pointed it to my usb hard drive for installation of ubuntu. When I rebooted my PC, I got a message that there was no boot manager. Even cntl-alt-delete did not work, so I unplugged the pwr cord and battery and reconnected them. I interrupted the boot to get to BIOS and found that Ubuntu was first in the boot chain. Apparently, when it is, no boot manager is found. So I removed the usb from the pc and was able to boot into W7.

Dec 17, 2010How can I load packages from the cd? I installed from cd1 which I burned on a desktop, then installed Lenny onto a laptop. Works great, no problems except I have no way of connecting the laptop other than wireless.
I've found the network manager package on the cd, but don't have a clue how to install it. I really need to get the wireless working so I can install package manager, wi-fi radar and some other things. I tried putting the disk back in and thought rescue mode might bring me back to where I could select the individual packages I need, but that didn't work, it just wanted to go through another install. Thought there was a way to select individual packages and add them to the installation.

Dec 7, 2010Just finished installing F14 with RAID1 setup for 2 hdd (SATA''s). Entire drives are mirrored, including SWAP. As I had done in the past, I was planning on installing grub on MBR of 2nd hdd. In prep for this I did the following to locate the grub setup files:

find /grub/stage1
(hd0,1)

I was surprised, expected to get (hd0,0) & (hd1,0), not (hd0,1) & (hd1,1)
running "fdisk -l" I get:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders, total 234441648 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

MBR is the first 512 bytes of the drive. Each partition has a boot sector. In my case grub stage 1 is on 2nd partition of sda & 2nd partition of sdb. What i dont understand is how grub stage 1 can be on sda2 & sdb2, since I am assuming that sda1 & sdb1 would be the first partitions of the drives & therefore contain the MBR's. Maybe this might be because sda1 & sdb1 are SWAP partitions?

I have Fedora 14 installed. I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 from the hard disk. I copied the seven part iso to the /iso. I didn't create a directory in the /iso. I ran the md5sum on the seven parts and compared it with the md5sum that is provided on the website and they are all identical.
When I tried to install from the hard problem, the first thing is instead of sda1,2,3,5 I found the following options:
well, I selected /dev/hda2 and left the directory blank. The images can't be found. What am I doing wrong? And why is the difference between sda in the partition and hda in the installation?

I keep thinking it has found the real /boot/grub directory but that is never the one updated.

Dec 9, 2010In the past I have been able to succesfully install ubuntu on several external usb drives with up to 500gb in size.Now I am trying to install a copy of ubuntu 10.10 on an external usb iomega 1tb eGo drive but I am having major issues.The installer reports the total disk size as only 124 gb, instead of the 998gb that gParted reports for the same disk. Proceeding with "use the full disk" installs ok, but it doesn't boot.Grub2 reports that it cannot find the kernel.After some desperate attempts to repartition and after some googling I think that the issue may be with the sector size, which fdisk -l reports as 4096kb (all my other drivers report 512kb) and I have the impression that linux is not ready for it (or I lack the knowledge, which seems more likely).I have also tried to install fedora 14. This distribution reports the correct disk size, installs properly, but again, it cannot boot (Fedora uses grub, not grub2), with a very similar message to the grub2 installer.Because of the way I work, I need my external usb drive to be able to boot linux. And I find it difficult to believe that linux doesn't handle 4096kb sector disks, so here I am asking for help . Please note I am not a linux expert.
