So I configured a couple of hard drives as JBOD in the BIOS. The boot up screen says they're in JBOD configuration. However when I boot into Ubuntu 10.10. I still see them as 2 separate disks and I mount them separately and write to each separately. I never used JBOD before but I would assume it would be like a RAID where the disks would show up as one volume.
View 8 RepliesSo I have a system that is about 6 years old running Redhat 7.2 that is supporting a very old app that cannot be replaced at the moment. The jbod has 7 Raid1 arrays in it, 6 of which are for database storage and another for the OS storage. We've recently run into some bad slowdowns and drive failures causing nearly a week in downtime. Apparently none of the people involved, including the so-called hardware experts could really shed any light on the matter. Some of these kinda weird me out, especially the disk utilization and the corresponding low data transfer. I'm not a disk IO expert so if there are any gurus out there willing to help explain what it is I'm seeing here. As a side note, the system is back up and running it just runs sluggish and neither the database folks nor the hardware guys can make heads or tails of it. Ive sent them the same graphs from iostat but so far no response.
I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Everything with the RAID device works fine, the only question I have belogs to the GRUB 0.97 Booloader. Is it possible to run Fedora 14 on hard drive SDA (1st drive in computer - 1 terabyte Western Digital) and also run Windows 7 on drive SDB (2nd drive in computer - 1 terabyte Hitachi)? I have been able to run both Windows and Fedora (Fedora installed last) on SDA, but all my attempts to have the two OSs running on different drives have failed. Am I attempting the impossible or can it be done? I'm not particularly concerned which OS goes on which drive, but Fedora grub doesn't seem to be able to pick up WIN7 when it is on drive SDB.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have tried (a few times now lol) to get this setup. I am using Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit. I have Windows 7 installed on one hdd, another hdd has the System Reserved partition along with a data partition for files, the third hdd is the one where I want to install Ubuntu. I have found numerous tutorials on installing them both on the same drive, but not on separate ones. The couple I have found haven't really worked.
I think that Ubuntu is installed correctly but there is no option to boot into it. Windows 7 just happily loads itself. I have tried reinstalling and selecting 'sdc1' (the native ubuntu partition) as the location for the bootloader to be installed and then used Easy BCD to add that location to the windows bootloader which gives the option to load Ubuntu but when selected dies complaining that there is a missing file (I think it just can't find the Ubuntu bootloader).
As an aside when I get to the installation screen the Ubuntu installer keeps on telling me that there are no operating systems detected on the machine (Even though I'm pretty sure the drive it is talking about 'sda' is where Windows 7 is installed). Not sure if that matters just seemed a little wierd.
I am using an Abit NF7-S V2 mobo to set up my dual boot system where each OS (XP & Ubuntu) will run on a totally separate HD (as opposed to both OS�s being set up on one HD). Since they will be running as stand alone boot drives, how does one set it all up so that one can boot from one or the other? I don�t see how I can do it from the bios. How do I do it?

I'm going to be setting up a dual-boot; my first in about three years. I'll be using separate hard disks for this, and installing Slackware second on the bigger of the two drives. When I've done this in the past I've used Grub; Is there anything I need to know or pitfalls I need to avoid doing it with Lilo?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWe were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.
I've been trying to properly install grub for the past 3 days and failing every time.I recently bought a new computer and would like to dual boot Windows 7 64 and Natty. On my previous machines, ubuntu installer has automatically detected windows. It does not do so on this machine.I have three hard drives: 2 ssd's and a single 3 tb drive for storage.
I would like one ssd for windows 7 and one for natty.Currently, I am able to boot into both OS's but only by altering the boot sequence of the drives from the bios. I am hesitant to install grub to the windows drive for fear I will lose the ability to boot into windows. I did this early in the discovery process and ended up having to reinstall windows.
I have been messing around with the ubuntu family for some time now, and usually have no problem finding my answers. This one, however, is giving me some trouble. I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.
Fedora is having trouble identifying a raid partition, it sees them as separate drives. I got drivers from dell, but during a Fedora dvd install, it mentions nothing about a place to install extra drivers.
When it says it must "initialize" the drives, Fedora then breaks the dell bios raid. How to either install the dell drivers or make Fedora see the raid partition as one?
Okay I want to install Ubuntu Studio but sense the file is 1.7 gigs can I somehowbut half on or a 1/3 on disk the next part on another and so on. If so how?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis question is somewhat open ended, so I'll describe the specific issue, what I want to accomplish in general, and what I tried to do. It'd be a little long, but hopefully not too daunting.For quite a while my approach to multi-OS boots has been to install each OS to a separate disk. When I want to boot a specific OS I change the boot drive in the BIOS. I find this convenient for several reasons, but mostly because I don't get boot manager conflicts. If I remove a disk or change the OS on it, this doesn't affect the booting of other OS's.
Note that when I say multi-OS, this meant until now multiple versions of Windows. I've occasionally tried some linux distros on VirtualBox, but now I want to do a full install, and see if I can use it as a main OS. (What prompted this was the recent release of Wine 1.2 and the fact that my new job doesn't involve any Direct3D or DDI work. I've always been partial to the open source movement, but I'm also fine with Windows and never before felt I could make the move without losing key abilities). My plan was (still is, if I can get it to work) to use Linux for everyday e-mail, web browsing and such, play Windows games over Wine, and install Windows 7 in VirtualBox for Windows development.I currently have two disks, one with my main Vista x64 installation, and the other with a Vista x86 installation which I used for my previous job and I no longer need. This is the disk I want to use for the Linux installation. It has a lot of partitions but quite a bit of free space (since I copied a 80GB disk and 250GB disk into a 500GB disk and haven't taken advantage of the extra space).My first choice of distro was Linux Mint, since it's known to be friendly to new users, and I like the software installer on it. I thought then that I'd try openSUSE 11.3. The live CD looked usable enough, but when I tried to install I couldn't tell how to make sure that I don't get a boot manager which will try to give me access to the Windows versions on the disks. I don't want this, and what I'm really afraid of is that an install will screw the booting of Vista x64 on the other disk (which, granted, I can disconnect for the install, but I'd rather not). At that point I decided to post a question here.So hopefully you understand what I want to achieve. I don't much care which Linux distro I install, but I'd rather have one which gives me as much usability out of the box (or easily installable) as possible.
I am setting up another computer with Debian 6 stable and I have only 2 normal sata slot on the motherboard, the board has also 2 other Raid sata slot, I don't want to use Raid, can I just plug my 3rd drive into one of those. I read that I can use those slot as JBOD (just another bunch of drive). By running a Mandriva live cd before I install any OS, I don't see that 3rd drive. I don't see anything about JBOD in the bios.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI put together a NAS-like device using a 2-slot USB JBOD enclosure and an eBox-3300. I'm using Ubuntu Server 8.04 Hardy as an OS for the eBox. I have two WD EARS drives hat I intend to use in the USB enclosure, one 1TB large, the other 2TB. I managed to install Hardy on the 1TB drive and boot from it. The 2TB drive is preformatted XFS. If I add the 2TB drive in the enclosure, it does not show up in /dev in ubuntu. In the device's BIOS, both drives appear just fine with correct IDs, so I'm guessing the problem is with ubuntu.

am using the community build of Ubuntu 9.10, I have an old as dirt Power Macintosh G3 Blue And White, and I can't get it to install. I tried the live CD first of course, and now the alternate. Both tell me that no disk drives detected, even though Mac OS 9, X, and Fedora all detect both my 40gb seagate, my 120gb seagate, and my 120gb maxtor.I am trying to get this running with some sort of linux for a school project.What is happening is it asks me what driver to use, and if I select the bottom option that it is none of the above, it asks me to load a driver from a USB flash drive, which I don't know what driver to use. They are all standard IDE devices hooked into the built in bus. I obviously can't move past this point.

Added an SSD (dev/sdc) and decided to move some less often changed directories there. Started with /usr and /boot, leaving / on a primary in the first drive, for now. All started ok, and my changed fstab mounted the right ones, and the system works.
However, grub is actually using the original /boot on / on sda1. I cannot see any way to change this. (Which makes it sorta hard to update the kernel

Okay, since it has two choices, I tried to tell it which one to use. But, grub> root (hd2,5) does nothing.
Disk /dev/sda:
what I seem to recall, grub doesn't care about the boot flag on the disk. Nor does it care about primary vs. logical (except GNU doc says "makeactive" only works on a primary?).
The GNU doc also indicates that it looks for a directory /boot on the partition, so if you're mounting a partition as /boot, it also needs to contain a /boot directory under it. Tried that, but no change.
Is my problem the logical partition? Does that prevent "grub> root" from changing it? I'm afraid to wipe out the old /boot and find that I can't start up.
I'm not a stranger to Ubuntu Linux and I was using it for a couple of months with no problems until last week when I turned my computer on and it would go no further than the boot screen and it said 'Error- Insert System Disk'. So I inserted the system disk (Ubuntu Linux 10.something) and after waiting 10 minutes for it to load up it said 'Installation failed, desktop session will now be run and you can try installing again'. And so I cant choose any disks or partitions and so it wont let me go any further. How do I create one? I'm currently running on desktop sessions and they take forever to load up and I cant watch videos or anything because there is no flash. By the way please try and explain to me really simply because I am quite dopey and I wont be able to understand posh complicated computer words.
I have installed SUSE yesterday.Everything has been fine except two.1. I can't access my hard disk drives. It says it need to install online some software for it but it can't.I am attaching a screen shot of the error I encounter.2. I have Ubuntu installed in another disk drive but in the Grub menu there in no option to boot to Ubuntu OS.How should I change the text in 'menu.lst' to solve the problem?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSince I installed 11.3 I have noticed the /srv and /local mount points are empty! I also can no longer see my hard drives that have no mount points. I couldn't mount any hot plug media either but now have that fixed. I won't go into the mess I have with my video card and getting the x server started....
I did have Xampp installed to /srv/www but don't even know where it is now!

I had no problems with this in 11.1 until a month ago when I updated and it seemed to keep losing the permissions for these drives as once I accessed them via Dolphin they would be accessible. Now they are not even visible in a file manager!
