Software :: Rescue Windows Hard Disk With Knoppix?

Oct 23, 2010

I wanted to get the data off the WD2500 (250MB) hard drive so slaved it to an older Dell machine running Win 2k. Unfortunately, the older machine's BIOS is so old it can't read the larger hard drive. Then, I connected it to a Gateway machine running Win 2k; it started running chkdsk on the WD2500 drive and indicated it was 'fixing' a bunch of errors. It appeared to be in an endless loop, fixing the same problem over and over, so I killed the power. Then, I booted the Gateway machine with Knoppix Live CDIt shows the 250G hard drive in the file manager window. When I click on the 250G hard drive icon it shows at the bottom of the window '1 visible item (0 hidden), Free space: 97.4 GB (Total: 250.0 GB)This seems about rightHowever, the file listing only includes a single item, 'Documents and Settings' of size 4.1 kb. So something to do with the directory structure is corrupted, but I don't know what, and I don't know how to fix it

Hardware :: Master Hard Disk Error After Installing Ubuntu 8.10 / Hard Disk Died

Apr 8, 2009

after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died. The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops. One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. Now that other hard disk has error and will not work

General :: Installing Form The Hard Disk

My current partition is:

I have Fedora 14 installed. I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 from the hard disk. I copied the seven part iso to the /iso. I didn't create a directory in the /iso. I ran the md5sum on the seven parts and compared it with the md5sum that is provided on the website and they are all identical.

When I tried to install from the hard problem, the first thing is instead of sda1,2,3,5 I found the following options:

well, I selected /dev/hda2 and left the directory blank. The images can't be found. What am I doing wrong? And why is the difference between sda in the partition and hda in the installation?

General :: No Hard Disk Drives When Installing Ubuntu

Dec 29, 2010

I'm not a stranger to Ubuntu Linux and I was using it for a couple of months with no problems until last week when I turned my computer on and it would go no further than the boot screen and it said 'Error- Insert System Disk'. So I inserted the system disk (Ubuntu Linux 10.something) and after waiting 10 minutes for it to load up it said 'Installation failed, desktop session will now be run and you can try installing again'. So I tried installing whilst on a desktop session and I eventually got to step 4 of 8 and it lets me go no further. This is what step 4 of 8 is:http://oi54.tinypic.com/mx2g79.jpg

And so I cant choose any disks or partitions and so it wont let me go any further. How do I create one? I'm currently running on desktop sessions and they take forever to load up and I cant watch videos or anything because there is no flash. By the way please try and explain to me really simply because I am quite dopey and I wont be able to understand posh complicated computer words.

General :: Mounting Hard Drive In Knoppix ?

May 29, 2011

I have been running a computer under Windows XP for years, and recently it stopped booting unexpectedly. It tries to load windows, but partway though loading a BSOD flashes and it shuts down. To remedy this and hopefully fix this, my frined lent me some Knoppix CDs that I could boot from. He also lent me some external hard drives. I want to be able to access my files on my old hard drive.

Here's the problem: (in Knoppix 6) When I try to mount my main partition of my hard drive, which shows as sda2 (sda1 is an old recovery partition left over from when I ran vista), the following message pops up: "A job is pending on dev/sda2" A little later another error window pops up: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." I want to be able to mount my hard drive in Knoppix 6.

General :: Accessing Secondary Hard Drive With Knoppix

Apr 5, 2011

I am working on a computer that the hard drive crashed. Inititially they had a virus, reloaded windows, and had the computer up and running. When downloading software it crashed and will not boot. I have tried all the numerous routine fixes with no success including using the repair discs. The repair discs no longer work and they are unable to get a second set. As a last resort I am able to access the hard drive when booting from Knoppix from a CD. There are a couple things I would like to try from Knoppix, but do not know if it is possible. First, Is it possible to load the boot files from knoppix? Second, can you roll back the drivers from knoppix?

General :: Installing Flash Player On Knoppix 6.0

Aug 14, 2009

i have recently gotten the Knoppix 6.0, and have installed it on my usb flash drive. finally i can browse the internet again on that laptop, but alas, i can't watch any videos because flash player isnt installed yet. i tried to install it by myself and followed adobe's instructions but i just dont get why it won't install. here are my questions:

1. in the adobe instructions, it is said that i need to unpackage the files. and when i unpackage it, a new directory/folder is supposed to appear. but why does it always unpackage on the desktop? no folders are created when i unpackage it.

2. it is said that i need to navigate to the newly created directory and type a command. how am i supposed to navigate to a non-existent directory, huh? and how do you even navigate to certain directory? i typed help in the terminal (i'm using LXTerminal by the way) to look for a hint but i saw nothing there. so, how do you "navigate" using the terminal?

I really need to install the flash player. I've also tried using the Install components in start > system tools > install components and selected the 'flashplugin-nonfree: Flash support for your browser' but when i clicked install, nothing happens.

General :: Changing GRUB From An External Hard Disk To The Internal Hard Disk?

May 14, 2010

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

General :: Use Hard Disk Image Like A Regular Hard Disk?

Apr 6, 2010

If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?

By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...

(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop, offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

Fedora :: Installing From CD To Hard Disk

Jul 9, 2010

I burned a Fedora ISO onto a CD and I love it. Now, I want to add it as a dual-boot to my hard disk. I divided Drive C into two (formatted) partitions one labeled Linux.During an attemped installation, I was able to find (thru "edit") the partition called "Linux." But one of the next questions threw me: it asked for a "mount point."I have no idea what that means (and yes I have readthe guide onthis site).

ACTUALLY... what I need to do is simply install into a partition I already set up.I don't find an option for that within the Fedora installation menu.I have 20 years of experience with Windows and try to keep up with everything, but Linux is totally new to me, so I don't understand the terminology.I also have been trying to find how to create a dual-boot situation from the hard disk, where XP is still my default (for now, at least).

Ubuntu Installation :: No Boot Manager After Installing On Usb Hard Disk

Aug 9, 2011

I saved wubi.exe to c: and when running wubi, I pointed it to my usb hard drive for installation of ubuntu. When I rebooted my PC, I got a message that there was no boot manager. Even cntl-alt-delete did not work, so I unplugged the pwr cord and battery and reconnected them. I interrupted the boot to get to BIOS and found that Ubuntu was first in the boot chain. Apparently, when it is, no boot manager is found. So I removed the usb from the pc and was able to boot into W7.

Software :: Installing Hpacucli Rpm On Knoppix 6.0.1?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to install the HP array configuration utility cli rpm in Knoppix v6.0.1, but I'm getting failed dependencies- I'm installing using

Code:
rpm -ivh hpacucli-8.50-6.0.noarch.rpm
and these are the failures I'm getting-
Code:
Error: Failed dependencies:
/bin/sh is needed by hpacucli-8.50-6.0.i386

[Code]...

I've done lots of googling, and I see a lot of conflicting information about how to solve the problem- I need a real approach from someone who has been through these dependency problems before- whenever I try to solve a dependency problem I usually just make it worse I cannot find a .src.rpm file to rebuild this program from source with. Also, the /bin/sh dependency failure baffles me- can someone explain this to me?

Oct 6, 2010

Right Now I'm using hdparm command in unix to shut down the hard disk but there are few issues with it.

when it wakes back up it consumes
lots power. Is there any other way
to do it?
Many times when I put my
hard disk to sleep, I can see few
bursts at the beginning and then
after a while it goes to sleep. I
think its because of the journaling
system in ubuntu (which I use) Have
anybody encountered that?
What would
be the best linux/unix operating
system (eg: ubuntu/centos/redhat) to
work on extensive hard disk
operations?

/dev/sda1 222G 166G 45G 79% /
tmpfs 2.0G 0 2.0G 0% /dev/shm

2). My PHP script needs to save a lot of 'cache' files, how to make the script use the second disk for saving the files - I mean what path should I edit in my script (current is '/var/www/html/tmp')
