Software :: Upgraded To 10.04 LTS Kubuntu - Try Login Into KDE Begins To Boot Then Crashes?
May 8, 2010
I upgraded Kubuntu to 10.04 LTS. At login screen I enter my password to login once that harddrive icon comes up it immediatly gives me a black screen then goes back to the login screen.
ive tried deleting everything in /tmp/. i did a sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a, Gnome works perfectly well.
**Just noticed that on grub screen it displays Ubuntu**

I saw some pictures of Kubuntu online and thought it looked awesome. I installed it from Gnome using the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop". It installed fine, no errors. I logged off and picked Plasma Workspace or whatever its called from the menu and it showed a black screen for about 7 seconds, then showed a clear bar with a hard drive icon fading in. Then it crashed back to the login screen. I rebooted and tried again: same thing. I installed xfce and it works perfectly. Gnome still works. Ditto for Unity. But kde keeps crashing. PS: Graphics card is an ATI Radeon.

been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.

After the login screen, the KDE icons appear. When it gets to "HDD" icon, it halts and the only option remaining is to reboot.I can't boot into the terminal environment. When I try that, I get an empty screen without text (maybe because of "quiet splash"?

I installed Kubuntu 9.04 recently which I thought was jaunty, but my apt sources list had Karmic Koala as the repos. Updater told me 9.1 was available so I used updater to upgrade my system. Normally I'd use apt-get dist-upgrade. Since then, apt-get / amarok and updater won't access the all the repos. Apt-get stalls at ip 32.1.3.136.
Here is my sources list.

Is it still true that if I install the LTS version of Kubuntu that I'll be stuck with the versions of software that it comes with? Or, will the versions of the software it comes with be updated during the three years it's good for?
Can I convert my present install of Kubuntu 9.10 to Kubuntu 9.10 LTS by installing Synaptic and clicking on Settings>Updates>Long>term>support>releases>only? I'd prefer using the 10.04 LTS version but not if I'll be stuck with software I can't upgrade.

I have upgraded my Kubuntu Lucid AMD64 desktop with KDE 4.5 using the kubuntu ppa backports. I am impressed with the overall visual and performance improvements. However I am facing the following issues after upgradation -
1. When I execute any application as root user (using kdesudo <app name>) they load with a primitive GUI. I have attached a copy of the dolphin application loaded as root user (kdesudo dolphin). Not sure how to restore the latest GUI for them. I tried running systemsettings as root user and tried to customize the theme little bit. But not much has changed
2. One new short cut for ExpoBlending has comeup in section Graphics. I am unable to execute it, since it has multiple missing dependencies, neither able to uninstall it.
3. I installed kpart-webkit and configured it using keditfiletype utility. Now while browsing certain websites such as facebook(after loading farmville application in facebook), I can see few dummy popup windows. Attached file contains one such screenshot.

A little while ago i bought a magazine with the openSUSE 11.1 distro on it but couldn't install it so i gave up. I am attempting to have another go. The problem is that the os will work fine when booted from CD in fail safe mode and can be installed from there but when out of fail safe mode the system begins to boot but freezes and will do nothing more.

XP Pro SP3
Ubuntu 9.10
Kubuntu 9.10
Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

I have always used ubuntu (gnome) desktop but recently I decided to try Kubuntu (kde).
It has been many years since I last used KDE. And I decided to install it on my laptop; thus running KDE and Gnome side-by-side on a 10.10 x64 installation.
I have noticed that KDE looks really slick and that it still is massively more complicate compared to Gnome, this complication does allow for more customisation.
But I am facing some problems particularly with stability.
Every time I boot into KDE, it crashes complaining about window decorations. I am using a T410 lenovo.

i've been running Kubuntu 11.04 for a couple weeks now and trying to transition away from windows but i have had this problem with seemingly random system freezing and crashing i run kubuntu 11.04 64bit on a dell studio 1558 with a core i5, intel hd graphics, and 6gb ram.
my laptop after awhile will just freeze and all i can do is a hard reset, sometimes the screen will go black with a bunch of text, but i think that only happens when virtualbox is running b/c i can sometimes get back to the desktop, but it will freeze nevertheless (i run win7 in vbox for certain things i need like itunes and office).. i do notice that my laptop is getting pretty warm, but i don't know if that's related b/c it always did under windows

I am trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP rp5700 desktop unit. These units were originally sold as a Point of Sales unit I believe, but HP also markets it as a high life cycle server for SMB market.I tried to load CentOS on this unit via CD (created from downloaded ISO of course). It presents the initial CentOS banner page and waits for the obligatory "enter" to continue. It begins the boot process up to discovering the PCI stuff and just locks up, no response. I have to power down to restart.Since this does not even get to the point of installing. I am at a loss what to do next. Has anyone had a similar issue with other PCs.The boot stops at the lineACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI0] (0000:00)

I upgraded to 13.1 and can still login with all users via ssh on a headless machine, but now when I try to login to X via XDMCP I just get returned to the login window. I do not have KDE or kdm installed, but rather use xdm. I was having no trouble prior to upgrade and even had an XDMCP session going during the upgrade, but once I logged out I couldn't log back in. I'm not real sure what's going on.

Recently upgraded to fc11. Have nvidia working ok. Using kernel 2.6.30.9-90.fc11.i586 (not the latest). When booting up I get to gui login and see the background change. It takes 20 seconds or more before I see the login dialog box. After selecting the user it takes another 20 seconds before I see the box change to enter the password. This only happens at boot. If I logout and log back in everything is fine.

Upgraded from Hardy where all worked fast and the only annoying bug was a total freeze every so often. So I thought it would be good to go to the next LTS version and see if it works better. However it is very slow starting up. bootchart reports 2:44 min compared to 40 sec for Hardy and that is only the start-up. Then the real drag begins after you enter your password. It's been up to 30 min!!! before the system became responsive and did not have a solid HDD light.
So my question is where do I start troubleshooting. I'll include the bootchart and dmesg log. What else is needed to tackle this issue? I'm really in a tizzy here, since it's my wives laptop and she is not as patient as I am, to put it mildly. Do I need to downgrade back to Hardy

i upgraded ubuntu from 9.10 (pretty sure it was .10...) and now my machine goes through the bios and i get a black screen w/a blinking cursor instead a boot choice to ubuntu or windows 7. system worked fine prior to upgrade... reading lots of things it appears i likely have a problem with grub2 (soemone correct me if i'm off base?) so i've been trying to restore and reinstall grub 2 (using this and silmilar threads: [URL]), got frustrated and reinstalled 10.04 over the upgrade install. same blinking cursor... i did the following from this thread: [URL]

i've gotten that response from trying to reinstall/repair grub 2 also. i'm near wit's end and am near completely wiping hdd and reloadng w7 OS.

I upgraded 9.10 to 10.04 and now it won't boot. The way 9.10 used to boot was after turning on the computer it would go through the bios screen and then a screen would come up and list both operating systems, Windows Xp and Ubuntu. XP would be highlighted and would normally boot if I did not change the highlighted area. If I changed the highlighted area to Ubuntu it would boot into Ubuntu 9.10. Now after doing the upgrade, it gets to the same screen with the two operating systems listed.
When I change the highlighted to Ubuntu an error message is briefly displayed and then it goes back to the screen that lists both operating systems. I think the error message says something like couldn't find Ubuntu, or something similiar to that. Windows XP runs fine when I highlight Windows XP in that first screen, but I want to be able to run Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu on a secondary drive, but shouldn't it have rewritten the upgraded files on that same drive that had 9.10 on it?
