Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From Karmic To Lucid - Error
Jun 18, 2010
Error during commit 'E:Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on mountall' Restoring original system state
Yeah...that's what I get every time I try to upgrade to lucid lynx.
NOTE: I haven't updated for quite some time. I may have gotten one or two updates for karmic but that was it. Just thought it might be important....
NOTE: Also not sure if this is important, but karmic installed and did some funny stuff to itself. My desktop no longer exists. It just isn't there. Also, when I try to turn of my computer it gets all kinds of errors and eventually I have to just pull the plug....something about a dev loop0 right after is says its deactivating swap...

I had a nicely working karmic 64bit/windows XP install, but the "upgrade" button to 10.04 has finally got the better of me. Now, when the PC boots up, the following failure occurs:Memory CheckPCI device listingVerifying DMI Pool Data ......error: no such device:e9eb88c2-67f2-47a7-bf9d-50b77b2d3480grub rescue>_Some more information.linux is on sdb1when I type "ls" I get: "(hd0) (hd1) (fd0)"however, I've not managed to get "ls (hd1,1)" or similar to do anything, the best I get is "error: no such partition".the command "find /boot/grub/grub.conf" results in the error "Unknown command 'find'"I've tried swapping the boot order in the bios from hd0 to hd1 but that has made no difference. There is no grub loader, no linux, no windows, no operating system of anykind, just the "grub rescue>" prompt.

I have a dedicated server running Ubuntu-server Jaunty. As you know, this OS no longer has security updates. I'm trying to upgrade it to the latest LTS (Lucid) but first thing's first: I'm having trouble upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic.
Here's the problem. I get the following when I try do-release-upgrade:
Code:
$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d
Checking for a new ubuntu release
Done Upgrade tool signature
Done Upgrade tool

force an upgrade to Karmic instead of Lucid? (And no, sadly, re-installing is not an option as this is a server with no direct physical access)

I have a Core 2 Duo iMac that I had set up for triple boot using Fedora Core (probably FC8 )and GRUB, Windows XP Pro, and Mac OS X v10.5. Some time ago, I had to blow out and reinstall my Windows installation because it had developed errors, but this also blew out my GRUB, leaving the Fedora install non-bootable. Since I never really used FC on this machine much, I didn't worry.
Lately, I've acquired an hp Mini 110, on which I'm running Linux Mint 8 (Helena), and I'd like to upgrade my FC partition on the iMac to Karmic, but when I run the installer, it won't let me use all of the existing Linux partition, instead wanting to resize it to accommodate both FC and Ubuntu.
How do I make the installer simply replace FC with Karmic, using the entire existing partition? I'm sure earlier versions of Linux that I've used had a simple "erase all Linux partitions and install" option, and the "Manual" option doesn't appear to read the existing partition information (I was too afraid to go any further).
I ended up quitting the installer, which put me into the Live CD environment, where I used the File Browser to "Format..." the Linux partition, but when I went back to the installer, I ran into the same problem, and it didn't seem to matter if I unmounted the existing partitions or not.

I recently got a Dell Netbook Mini10v with Ubuntu 8.04 preinstalled. It does not give the option to upgrade using the normal features in the GUI (as far as I can tell) how should I go about upgrading my system to 9.10?

I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

I really want Python 2.6, which is not part of the standard Hardy packages. I just tried installing the Python 2.6 Linux distro direct from python.org. While I didn't see any error messages during the installation, I'm still defaulting to Python 2.5, and 2.6 installed to a different folder than 2.5.
A secondary wish: I would also like GROMACS 4.0 instead of 3.3. Again, Karmic has it as standard, Hardy doesn't.
I'm running dual hard drives in a software RAID1 configuration. My system is Linux only, so I have no Windoze compatibility issues to worry about.
Still, I've gathered that upgrading in the presence of RAID is different, and more problematic, than a standard upgrade.

I'm currently upgrading my laptop, and it has completed the step "Getting new packages", and is now onto "Installing the upgrades".It says it is going to take another 2.5 hours, but I am leaving work soon and want to take the laptop with me. Is it safe to disconnect it from the internet at this point? I don't want to fudge up the install, but I don't want to have to leave my laptop at work all weekend (or have to come back and pick it up at some point).

I can't upgrade from Karmic to Lucid,If I try to use the update manager I get a message that says "Can't download release notes. Check your Internet connection". I've tried changing the repository and I get the same message, but I can log in to the Internet, and download and install any program from the repository. I also get regular updates for Karmic so the repository is fine.I tried the command line
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I just upgraded Ubuntu Karmic to Lucid alpha 3. It works fine except for a few things that can be expected in an alpha version. Anyway, I would like to know if it would be better to upgrade to the final release of Lucid or if I should do a clean install. I don't mind losing my files and settings because there is nothing important on my laptop, but it would be nice not to.

On the 28th of April I upgraded my system (laptop with "SIS Mirage 3 Graphics" video card) from Karmic to Lucid and my screen resolution was reduced from 1024*768 to 800*600. I tried during one day to find the suitable driver but no luck on SIS web page.
I eventually found it on the followwing address : [URL]
It works very well and the resolution has jumped now to 1280*800. The only remaining and identified problem is with grub2 : my system is dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu) and the "recovery" mode does not work anymore for ubuntu, I will maybe have to wait for a next update.

I made the mistake of trying to upgrade my Karmic (server) installation to Lucid earlier today, after which I've been unable to boot into my server. The server is on OVH, so I can't watch it boot, but I am able to access all of the data from the filesystems via rescue mode. I ran fsck and that came back clean. I also ran the boot info script, the results of which are below.
I know my best bet is to backup what I can and do a fresh install, but I won't be able to back everything up so trying to get this working would certainly be more convenient. I'm sure I'm leaving out useful information, so let me know and I'll post it.
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
Boot Info Summary:
=> Lilo is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda
sda1:
File system: ext3

I've some major pains with my Debian 5.0.4 ("lenny") installation and as "squeeze" is delayed I consider switching to "lucid".
Has anybody done this before? I'm not sure if should upgrade directly to "lucid" or do an intermediate step via "karmic".

When will an updated version of Empathy be available for Lucid? Or is there an easy way to install the Meerkat version?
I intend to continue using Lucid for a couple years, but the version of Empathy available in Lucid has some issues with logging chats -- there's no way to disable chats from being logged and there's no easy way to delete chat logs. The current version allows one to disable logging but it's not available in Lucid, only Meerkat.

After doing clean installs of the last two Ubuntu Releases, Jaunty and Karmic, I decided to try an upgrade to Lucid. The upgrade went well and I'm satisfied with it, however I have a question about the repositories. All the sources in /etc/apt/sources.list correctly point to Lucid, but in Software Sources / Other Software I still see references to Karmic. Is this something to be concerned about? Can I (or should I) change them to Lucid?

using update manager, i allowed my karmic desktop at work to begin the upgrade process to lucid on friday afternoon... i ran out of time, and headed home for the weekend. somewhere along the process, the screen locked. after arriving back at work this morning, i cannot unlock the screen, or even switch users. other threads in this forum seem to indicate that i should've aborted the upgrade, but... i didn't know enough to anticipate problems, and i guess i assumed that given the lengthy estimate to complete the upgrade, i could just pickup the process again on monday.
in any case, cycling the power didn't help, so i downloaded the iso, and have booted to the 10.04 'trial'. i was hoping somebody could help guide me through resetting a password on the on-disk os from the live cd... i'm ok with reinstalling if i can preserve my account's configs & prefs.

I just upgraded a Ubuntu Desktop 64bit system from Karmic (9.10) to Lucid (10.04). There were several PostgreSQL 8.3 clusters running on that machine. After the upgrade, postgresql was not able to run anymore.
The package postgresql-8.3 was marked "rc" in dpkg -l I was not able to re-install PostgreSQL 8.3 because of a mismatched dependency. There was no warning. I guess i should have read the release notes, which i didn't. There should have been a warning before it was too late to turn back and upgrade postgresql to 8.4 first. I don't see how this is supposed to work, ever.
I'd like to know if this would be considered a bug, if it is known already and how to correctly file this bug correctly if appropriate (ubuntu-bug ?)

if this is covered elsewhere. Could not find it (could be being blind) If I upgrade fro 9.10 to 10.04 LTS will I lose
1. My Gnome panel settings
2. My compiz fusion settings
and
3. Will EnvyNG still be able to manage m,y Nvidia drivers OK?
I realize there is always a risk with an upgrade but I was just wondering what you all thought the chances were that I may lose these settings.

I am going to upgrade from Lucid 32-bit to Lucid 64-bit, and I have some questions as to what I need to do. My system is a dual boot of XP and Lucid, but I only use XP rarely nowadays. I know I have to do a clean install, so here goes. Do I have to blow away my current install of Lucid? If the answer to (1) is yes, what about Grub? How do I get a list of my currently installed applications?
Currently Lucid is on one partition. I have a Clonezilla copy of the file system. Can I restore the /home directory from that copy once I have installed the 64-bit system? If I decide to make /home a separate partition, are there any good rules of thumb about how much space to allocate to the various partitions? Are there any other directories or files I should consider copying from the Clonezilla copy?

I have an HP Mini 210 and I recently performed an Upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and noticed that the netbook is much more noisy now (and can get very warm). I am not sure wether is the fan or the hard drive spinning. I did a "top" but no process was high consuming. I also thought that maybe compiz could be responsable for it, so I disabled all the visual effects, but still no change.
