Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded Karmic To Lucid Alpha 3?

Mar 16, 2010

I just upgraded Ubuntu Karmic to Lucid alpha 3. It works fine except for a few things that can be expected in an alpha version. Anyway, I would like to know if it would be better to upgrade to the final release of Lucid or if I should do a clean install. I don't mind losing my files and settings because there is nothing important on my laptop, but it would be nice not to.

Ubuntu :: Back To Karmic From Lucid Using Laptop With No Internal Display?

May 10, 2010

Laptop only has external display. When karmic boots 2.6.31-21 and initrd.img has finished loading, and I have taken quiet splash out of boot line, I get nothing on the external display until gnome come up. Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded From 8.04 - Lucid: Login Slow?

Sep 28, 2010

Upgraded from Hardy where all worked fast and the only annoying bug was a total freeze every so often. So I thought it would be good to go to the next LTS version and see if it works better. However it is very slow starting up. bootchart reports 2:44 min compared to 40 sec for Hardy and that is only the start-up. Then the real drag begins after you enter your password. It's been up to 30 min!!! before the system became responsive and did not have a solid HDD light.

So my question is where do I start troubleshooting. I'll include the bootchart and dmesg log. What else is needed to tackle this issue? I'm really in a tizzy here, since it's my wives laptop and she is not as patient as I am, to put it mildly. Do I need to downgrade back to Hardy

Ubuntu Installation :: Install To External HD To Become Internal HD

Jan 31, 2010

I have an older laptop with a broken CD drive so I cannot boot the CD Drive with my ubuntu image. The laptop does not support booting from a USB drive either. So what I did was take the HD out of the laptop and using a USB enclosure plugged it in to my Win7 desktop. Then I booted from my Ubuntu CD and had Ubuntu install on the USB Drive. Took the USB drive off, and put it back in the laptop. It seems to work except it looks like it was installed with my desktop hardware. Also, every time it boots it starts at a recovery screen asking if for several boot options (including win7 which does not exist on the laptop!).

Ubuntu Installation :: Moving From External USB To Internal HDD?

Jun 16, 2010

Would this be a simple case of just installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 on my HDD, then copying everything from the USB over? I, of course, would need to update grub to load from the HDD instead of the USB. Would there be any other way to accomplish this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cant Boot Internal Or External Hdd?

Jan 3, 2011

I just installed maverick netbook edition on an external hard drive, creating my own partition table. When I tried to boot the drive, grub rescue mode told me file not found. I installed again and used the default partition table and got the same error. I gave up and tried to boot my fedora 13 internal hdd but was told that there was no such device. I looked through these forums and ran a bootloader script and was told that my internal hdd had a bootloader but my external didn't. I tried to load the kernel through grub rescue, but the file system was unknown to grub. The files are still on my internal drive and I don't want to reinstall just to boot it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid From Karmic

Apr 30, 2010

I'm currently upgrading my laptop, and it has completed the step "Getting new packages", and is now onto "Installing the upgrades".It says it is going to take another 2.5 hours, but I am leaving work soon and want to take the laptop with me. Is it safe to disconnect it from the internet at this point? I don't want to fudge up the install, but I don't want to have to leave my laptop at work all weekend (or have to come back and pick it up at some point).

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic To Lucid : Screen Resolution

Apr 29, 2010

On the 28th of April I upgraded my system (laptop with "SIS Mirage 3 Graphics" video card) from Karmic to Lucid and my screen resolution was reduced from 1024*768 to 800*600. I tried during one day to find the suitable driver but no luck on SIS web page.

I eventually found it on the followwing address : [URL]

It works very well and the resolution has jumped now to 1280*800. The only remaining and identified problem is with grub2 : my system is dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu) and the "recovery" mode does not work anymore for ubuntu, I will maybe have to wait for a next update.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Karmic To Lucid Upgrade?

May 3, 2010

I made the mistake of trying to upgrade my Karmic (server) installation to Lucid earlier today, after which I've been unable to boot into my server. The server is on OVH, so I can't watch it boot, but I am able to access all of the data from the filesystems via rescue mode. I ran fsck and that came back clean. I also ran the boot info script, the results of which are below.

I know my best bet is to backup what I can and do a fresh install, but I won't be able to back everything up so trying to get this working would certainly be more convenient. I'm sure I'm leaving out useful information, so let me know and I'll post it.

Yeah...that's what I get every time I try to upgrade to lucid lynx.

NOTE: I haven't updated for quite some time. I may have gotten one or two updates for karmic but that was it. Just thought it might be important....

NOTE: Also not sure if this is important, but karmic installed and did some funny stuff to itself. My desktop no longer exists. It just isn't there. Also, when I try to turn of my computer it gets all kinds of errors and eventually I have to just pull the plug....something about a dev loop0 right after is says its deactivating swap...

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Wd Passport External Hdd To Replace Non-functioning Internal Hdd

May 22, 2010

I recently bought an Acer Extensa 5635Z and things were fine until I lent it to my godson for a weekend and got it back with the internal hard drive not functioning; he said it worked one night, and didn't the next morning; now, it's not recognised and an OS is not found during bootup. Whereas this was bad news for me in one way, on the other hand it was the perfect chance to switch to Ubuntu, something I've been wanting to do for years, and I've been really enjoying most aspects of it after using a live disk to be able to do my work over the last couple of days. Now, instead of buying another new laptop, I would like to use an external hard drive that I've just bought in the place of my broken internal hd, and have Ubuntu on it.I've read tutorials on it and they basically say that all I have to do is:

* Run the live disk - done
* Uncheck these options -
Mount removable drives when hot-plugged

[code]....

Is that it? Is there anything else I should do for this particular brand or situation (will the BIOS recognise the hard drive?) or any issues I should know about beforehand? How do I choose the HDD as primary boot? Should I insert the external HD before or after unchecking the options? Should I leave any of the 250 GB to '/dev/sda1'? There being no actual internal hard drive won't provoke trouble with the process?

P.S. My computer is 64-bit capable and I've been using a 64-bit Ubuntu disc. I've had trouble viewing things in this interim period, particularly videos, and incapable of installing codecs. Should I just get a 32-bit Ubuntu disc? Or will the problems be resolved when I have a rewritable disc on which to operate?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid: Software Sources Still Showing Karmic?

The upgrade went well and I'm satisfied with it, however I have a question about the repositories. All the sources in /etc/apt/sources.list correctly point to Lucid, but in Software Sources / Other Software I still see references to Karmic. Is this something to be concerned about? Can I (or should I) change them to Lucid?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Unlock Screen During Karmic To Lucid Upgrade?

May 3, 2010

using update manager, i allowed my karmic desktop at work to begin the upgrade process to lucid on friday afternoon... i ran out of time, and headed home for the weekend. somewhere along the process, the screen locked. after arriving back at work this morning, i cannot unlock the screen, or even switch users. other threads in this forum seem to indicate that i should've aborted the upgrade, but... i didn't know enough to anticipate problems, and i guess i assumed that given the lengthy estimate to complete the upgrade, i could just pickup the process again on monday.

in any case, cycling the power didn't help, so i downloaded the iso, and have booted to the 10.04 'trial'. i was hoping somebody could help guide me through resetting a password on the on-disk os from the live cd... i'm ok with reinstalling if i can preserve my account's configs & prefs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From Karmic To Lucid Disables PostgreSQL-8.3?

May 19, 2010

I just upgraded a Ubuntu Desktop 64bit system from Karmic (9.10) to Lucid (10.04). There were several PostgreSQL 8.3 clusters running on that machine. After the upgrade, postgresql was not able to run anymore.

The package postgresql-8.3 was marked "rc" in dpkg -l I was not able to re-install PostgreSQL 8.3 because of a mismatched dependency. There was no warning. I guess i should have read the release notes, which i didn't. There should have been a warning before it was too late to turn back and upgrade postgresql to 8.4 first. I don't see how this is supposed to work, ever.

I'd like to know if this would be considered a bug, if it is known already and how to correctly file this bug correctly if appropriate (ubuntu-bug ?)

Ubuntu Installation :: Compiz Slow In Lucid Kernel - Run Normail In Karmic

Jul 30, 2010

When Lucid released, I upgrade the Karmic in my Thinkpad R61 using

Code:

One things that remains until today is that when I'm using latest kernel (right now 2.6.32-24), the compiz run very slow, make the whole desktop unusable. When compiz is killed and using metacity, the desktop is running in normal speed.

Fortunately I still had the Karmic kernel (2.6.31-20) and booting using this kernel, everything run normally.

I just wonder what cause the latest kernel make compiz become slow. Is there any leftover application that I had to uninstall (maybe it's like pulseaudio's problem above), or any missing library/application that I need to install?

Ubuntu Installation :: "Upgraded" To Windows 7 And Now Can't See GRUB And Lucid / Fix It?

May 16, 2010

I'm at my wit's end with Windows this morning. I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago. Everything went very smoothly. Then I spent the greater part of Friday and Saturday "upgrading" to Windows 7 from Vista. I chose the "update" option which was only supposed to update to 7 rather than overwrite the entire HD. Now, GRUB doesn't load and I don't see my Linux partition. HOWEVER, it appears as though the partitions are still there! When I look in Winbloze at the HDs, it shows the Windoze HD as the partition size I made it when installing Ubuntu.

Any ideas on how to recover the awesomeness that is Ubuntu from this situation? Or do I need to install it fresh?

Ubuntu :: Karmic Stopped Automounting USB Drives And Internal DVD

Feb 28, 2010

yesterday my 9.10 stopped automounting my external USB drive, and in general any pendrive I put into any USB slot. What's worse, it also does not recognise CDs put into my DVD drive. (The only update I recall doing was the official update to the "sudo" package.)

1. The USB issue.I plug in my external hard drive. Seemingly, nothing happens. No new icons appear anywhere.
b) I tried gconf-editor and in apps -> nautilus -> preferences "media_automount" is set to YES.
c) After searching around these forums, I even put "usb_storage" into /etc/modules

2. The DVD drive issue.I put an audio CD in the drive. Usually an 'Audio CD' icon appeared after a few seconds, but now nothing happens. There is a "cdrom0" icon visible in the explorer, but when I click it, I get the following error: Code:Unable to mount cdrom0

So, it seems that for some strange reason my Karmic stopped being able to automount any new media. Does anyone have an idea why it is so and what should I do to bring this much-needed functionality back?
