Ubuntu Installation :: Fan Or Hard Drive Spinning - Upgrade From Karmic 9.10 To Lucid 10.04

May 5, 2010

I have an HP Mini 210 and I recently performed an Upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and noticed that the netbook is much more noisy now (and can get very warm). I am not sure wether is the fan or the hard drive spinning. I did a "top" but no process was high consuming. I also thought that maybe compiz could be responsable for it, so I disabled all the visual effects, but still no change.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid From Karmic

Apr 30, 2010

I'm currently upgrading my laptop, and it has completed the step "Getting new packages", and is now onto "Installing the upgrades".It says it is going to take another 2.5 hours, but I am leaving work soon and want to take the laptop with me. Is it safe to disconnect it from the internet at this point? I don't want to fudge up the install, but I don't want to have to leave my laptop at work all weekend (or have to come back and pick it up at some point).

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Upgrade From Karmic To Lucid

Jun 15, 2010

I can't upgrade from Karmic to Lucid,If I try to use the update manager I get a message that says "Can't download release notes. Check your Internet connection". I've tried changing the repository and I get the same message, but I can log in to the Internet, and download and install any program from the repository. I also get regular updates for Karmic so the repository is fine.I tried the command line

Code:

~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Karmic To Lucid Upgrade?

May 3, 2010

I made the mistake of trying to upgrade my Karmic (server) installation to Lucid earlier today, after which I've been unable to boot into my server. The server is on OVH, so I can't watch it boot, but I am able to access all of the data from the filesystems via rescue mode. I ran fsck and that came back clean. I also ran the boot info script, the results of which are below.

I know my best bet is to backup what I can and do a fresh install, but I won't be able to back everything up so trying to get this working would certainly be more convenient. I'm sure I'm leaving out useful information, so let me know and I'll post it.

Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
Boot Info Summary:
=> Lilo is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda

Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Suddenly Starts Spinning And Won't Stop ?

Mar 5, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu 10.x for several months without any major problems. Everything was fine until this week.

In the past few days there's been a strange new problem. When I turn my computer on, it works fine for 10 minutes, and then the hard drive suddenly starts spinning and won't stop. While this happens the computer is virtually unusable. Mouse moves slow and jerky; apps don't respond; and eventually the windows close by themselves, the whole screen goes blank, and the system reboots. The whole process takes a long time, sometimes 30 minutes.

The only change I made just before this problem started was upgrading Firefox Beta 4 version 10 to the latest version 11. So, I deleted it, and went back to the latest stable version 3.6.x. That seemed to fix the problem for a day or so. But then it started happening again. I deleted all signs of Firefox; it still happens. So it's not a browser issue.

I am stumped. Today I started my computer and just let it sit there without opening any programs at all except the system monitor. It ran fine for the usual 10-15 minutes, nothing changed out of the ordinary in terms of computer resources used in the system monitor, and then suddenly the drive started spinning wildly again .....

Right now my computer's been on for 10 minutes and I am typing this message .... but who knows what will happen right now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Unlock Screen During Karmic To Lucid Upgrade?

May 3, 2010

using update manager, i allowed my karmic desktop at work to begin the upgrade process to lucid on friday afternoon... i ran out of time, and headed home for the weekend. somewhere along the process, the screen locked. after arriving back at work this morning, i cannot unlock the screen, or even switch users. other threads in this forum seem to indicate that i should've aborted the upgrade, but... i didn't know enough to anticipate problems, and i guess i assumed that given the lengthy estimate to complete the upgrade, i could just pickup the process again on monday.

in any case, cycling the power didn't help, so i downloaded the iso, and have booted to the 10.04 'trial'. i was hoping somebody could help guide me through resetting a password on the on-disk os from the live cd... i'm ok with reinstalling if i can preserve my account's configs & prefs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From Karmic To Lucid Disables PostgreSQL-8.3?

May 19, 2010

I just upgraded a Ubuntu Desktop 64bit system from Karmic (9.10) to Lucid (10.04). There were several PostgreSQL 8.3 clusters running on that machine. After the upgrade, postgresql was not able to run anymore.

The package postgresql-8.3 was marked "rc" in dpkg -l I was not able to re-install PostgreSQL 8.3 because of a mismatched dependency. There was no warning. I guess i should have read the release notes, which i didn't. There should have been a warning before it was too late to turn back and upgrade postgresql to 8.4 first. I don't see how this is supposed to work, ever.

I'd like to know if this would be considered a bug, if it is known already and how to correctly file this bug correctly if appropriate (ubuntu-bug ?)

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic Corrupted MBR On Another Hard Drive

Feb 2, 2010

The computer that I have Ubuntu/Karmic just recently installed on, has 2 hard drives. Primary is Ubuntu, secondary is win95b. After the Karmic installation (which went perfectly), I now find that when I boot to the secondary drive, the MBR for win95b is reporting it is corrupted. I can use win95b, BUT it runs in dos compatability mode, and there are no CD drives showing, despite the fact that BIOS reports 2 cd drives. Can GParted fix the corrupted MBR on the win95b hard drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: 2nd Hard Drive Won't Boot (karmic Koala)?

Jan 3, 2010

i have 2 hard drives on my machine (1 with ubuntu & 1 with win xp) & would like to create a boot menu to select either at startup, but this isn't working. here is the order of how i setup my system:

1. installed win xp on drive1
2. disconnected drive 1 & installed ubuntu 9.10 on drive2
3. set ubuntu as master drive & win xp as slave drive

i've read about modifying menu.lst to get a boot menu, but as far as i can tell this is no longer valid in 9.10. i've also installed startup manager, which gives me a boot menu *but* when i select the win xp option at the boot menu, i get an error. i'm assuming this error is due to the fact that i am using 2 hard drives (instead of the more common 2 partition on 1 hard drive). Here is what my boot option says: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sdb1) Here is what commands run when I select this option:

drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1
Here is the error that results:
ERROR: INVALID SIGNATURE

is it possible to get a boot menu with 2 hard drives using 9.10? it's worth mentioning that i am a brand new user to linux. p.s. the reason i didn't go for a partition on 1 hard drive from the start is that the ubuntu partitioner did not recognize any free space on my win xp drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Lucid Dual Boot On Hard Drive With Errors And XP

Oct 23, 2010

I'm trying to create a dual-boot system, and have been following the instructions here. However my hard disk has bad sectors, and GParted won't let me resize the Windows partition. It tells me to use ntfsresize with --bad-sectors as an option, after having done some checks, all of which I've done. I've successfully shrunk the NTFS volume in this way -

when I boot into Windows, it says the hard drive is the size I set it at. However, the Ubuntu installer and Gparted still see the Windows partition taking up the entire hard drive. So, for the installation, do I have to set the size of the volumes manually, or is there a way to make Ubuntu see what ntfsresize has done?

Ubuntu / Apple :: MBP 5,3: Upgrade From Karmic To Lucid?

Jun 21, 2010

I searched through a lot of threads on whether its safe to upgrade from a working Karmic install to Lucid via the upgrade manager. I found a few threads from around 1 month ago where some said it worked, others said they had problems with grub etc.

Does anyone know the current status of this? I would like to upgrade to Lucid but I don't know if its safe. Would it be better to use an install CD instead of the upgrade manager? Do I need to manually install grub rather than let the install program do it? (I think the upgrade manager doesn't give an option it just installs grub after the upgrade)

I've tried everything in the standard troubleshooting guide, the sticky threads and plenty of forum searches but so far I've come up with nada. For some reason Ubuntu refuses to see my soundcard, no matter how much I twist and tweak it. It's an Asus M3A78 motherboard with an on-board Realtek ALC1200 chip (snd-hda-intel). Here's most of the relevant output, hopefully someone can easily spot what's going on because I'm getting snow-blind staring at the monitor. code...

Ubuntu :: Ubu Karmic 2 Lucid Upgrade Now Random Freezes / Fix It?

Apr 26, 2011

1st post @ LQ. Ubuntu user since 2007ish. Lots of PC experience... now vexed by upgrade from 9.10 Karmic to 10.04LTS Lucid.

The problem: random freezes whenever I boot into Lucid as user through usual Grub menu. The freeze sequence is: 1- screen stops, 2- mouse pointer freeze w/ no effect on click but moves freely and keyboard is useless, 3- screen blacks out for about 30 seconds and then returns but is unusable and 4- constant HDD activity for about 5-10 seconds. I have waited several minutes for a recovery of some sort but no dice. I reboot via on/off or reset button. Ubu deletes 2 inodes and then I'm off and running again.

If I boot through the recovery console there are no problems at all. The recovery console sequence: 1- select recovery from Grub menu, 2- at recovery menu select drop to root command prompt, 3- give root password, 4- enter 'gdm' at console prompt, finish boot up in my only user desktop (not root.)

I have not been able to find any log files that show an error message, but I'm not so tech oriented that I would necessarily know one if I saw one. Through many hours of browsing posts describing Lucid problems @ UbuntuForums (one of which has over 1,000 responses) I have found my '.xsession-errors' file (attached) is full of data.code...

It has been working beautifully, but I upgraded last night to Ubuntu 10.04. I had it run overnight and believe that I ran out of hard disk space, as I have less than 100MB left on the drive.

-I'd like to ensure that the installation completed properly so that I can run it for further modification/repair/reinstall.

-I know that this free space is inadequate and would like to either properly remove unneeded files or restart with a minimal installation of Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: No Sound After Upgrade From Karmic Koala To Lucid System / Get That Back?

Last Monday I upgraded the Ubuntu from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx in my laptop (HP Compaq volna 515), and I have no sound. Searching in linux forums for an answers, I've got that (as far as I understand) there's no unique solution for this problem.

This is my lspci code...

Also, I tried to clean up the pulse audio .. What is funny for me is that pulse audio and alsa, and the audio players seems to work normally (no error of device not found or something like that).. except that there's no sound out from the speakers.

Any suggestion to discover if the problem is drivers, kernel, packages, or hardware failure? more important, how do I get the sound back?

I just upgraded to 10.04. I went with the option of upgrading grub as well, should of just stuck with the old one I guess. I have 2 seperate physical hard drives, and now I can't get vista running on my other drive. I get to grub, choose the run vista option, and now it just blinks one underscore line in the top left corner of the black screen, and goes nowhere. When I was installing the upgrade, and when I got to the grub upgrade i tried to upgrade all teh different options in grub. All of them worked except the last one, and it warned me, that one of boot options in grub didn't install properly and may cause my OS not to start up. I guess that must of been the vista option.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 9.04 To 10.04 Using A Clonezilla Hard Drive Partition?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm trying to "upgrade" from ubuntu 9.04 to ubuntu 10.04.2 via a clonezilla (using a maverick usb clonezilla software with it's vmlinuz and initrd.img). but this clonezilla is not from a bootable usb flash drive, usb drive or CD, it's from the hard drive.

Here's what I have:

1) one 500gig drive with a primary partition under LVM. this partition has a 490gig root partition (ubuntu-root) and a 10 gig swap partition (ubuntu-swap_1). It has an extended partition (/dev/sda2) that's not under LVM consisting of one logical drive (/dev/sda5) that is the /boot partition.

2) I've upgraded the grub to grub2 (version 1.96) which has better features.

3) I've deleted the swap and reconfigured this partition with a name of (livehd) and it has an ext3 filesystem. I've copied the clonezilla software to this partition which also has the ubuntu 10.04.2 image that I want to restore to the root partition.

4) I've modified the existing grub2 using the 40-custom file so that the grub menu has the "Clonezilla Ubuntu 10.04.2 upgrade" entry in it.

5) the initrd.img from clonezilla has LVM support since I opened up the image to a directory using "gzip -d -c /boot/initrd.img|cpio -i" to check it.

6) grub2 sees the (ubuntu-root), (ubuntu-livehd), (hd0,1), (hd0), and (hd0,5) devices and can list (ls) their directories
