Ubuntu Installation :: No Internet Connection When Upgrading From Hardy To Karmic
Apr 17, 2010
I did an upgrade over the internet and on rebooting after it had completed there was no internet connection. I wired in an ethernet cable and although I can access the router and ping another machine on the network, there is no internet connection.
I really want Python 2.6, which is not part of the standard Hardy packages. I just tried installing the Python 2.6 Linux distro direct from python.org. While I didn't see any error messages during the installation, I'm still defaulting to Python 2.5, and 2.6 installed to a different folder than 2.5.
A secondary wish: I would also like GROMACS 4.0 instead of 3.3. Again, Karmic has it as standard, Hardy doesn't.
I'm running dual hard drives in a software RAID1 configuration. My system is Linux only, so I have no Windoze compatibility issues to worry about.
Still, I've gathered that upgrading in the presence of RAID is different, and more problematic, than a standard upgrade.
I tried to upgrade my kubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as given here. Actually I wanted to upgrade to kubuntu. The download completed successfully. However, while upgrading the power went off and left the computer in bad state. Now I see multiple two entries for both
in grub. Since I am not that familiar with ubuntu(in general linux), I would like When I tried to boot in first two of these I get the following error message and it remains in command-line mode.
However, the mount points are not having anything. It is like nothing got mounted. I would suspect there should be some way where I should be able to locate the downloaded upgrade stuff and apply it afresh again from start. Is this something possible?
I've just had to reinstall WinXP on a Dell Inspiron 1501. An ideal opportunity to try out Ubuntu. First I tried a WinXP/Hardy Heron dual boot - all seems okay. Next WinXP/Karmic dual boot - all seems okay. Then, why not, WinXP/Hardy/Karmic triple boot - all seems okay. Playing with each OS I noticed that Hardy had a couple of update notifications. So I opened Update Manager, went on-line, hit [Check] and was informed that there were 200+ Important Security Updates - I installed these. Better check Karmic too - similar story, installed 200+ updates. Everything still seems okay in WinXP, Hardy and Karmic. However, I've just noticed that the Grub2 boot menu now displays eight "Ubuntu" lines, as opposed to the four lines I had originally
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic (recovery mode) Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)...
I have replaced Ubuntu 8.04 with a clean install of 9.10 In 8.04 I used to be able to print to my Canon Pixma ip1500 using the resources at [URL] In 9.10 I can no longer get my Canon Pixma ip1500 printer to work because on the one hand: Open pstocanonbj_3.3-1.1_i386.deb with GDebi Package Installer
Code:
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libcupsys2-gnutls10 (>= 1.1.23-1) and on the other hand:
In http://packages.debian.org/etch/libcupsys2 download libcupsys2-gnutls10 "Download Page for libcupsys2_1.2.7-4+etch9_i386.deb on Intel x86 machines" Open with GDebi
After upgrading, my internet connection is very, very slow. Some sites pop up like always, but most take a very long time to load. Some as much as 3 to 5 minutes for a site that should just "pop" up.
It is not the internet connection, if I boot into windoze it is as fast as ever and I have a quite fast connection. It has just started this with the upgrade.
I have a dedicated server running Ubuntu-server Jaunty. As you know, this OS no longer has security updates. I'm trying to upgrade it to the latest LTS (Lucid) but first thing's first: I'm having trouble upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic.
Here's the problem. I get the following when I try do-release-upgrade:
Code: $ sudo do-release-upgrade -d Checking for a new ubuntu release Done Upgrade tool signature Done Upgrade tool
[Code]....
force an upgrade to Karmic instead of Lucid? (And no, sadly, re-installing is not an option as this is a server with no direct physical access)
My Windows Vista installation won't start after upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. If I select it on GRUB2, it leaves a blinking cursor on screen. And I tried doing the whole test disk thing and the boot info script. This is what my Results.txt file says
I have a Core 2 Duo iMac that I had set up for triple boot using Fedora Core (probably FC8 )and GRUB, Windows XP Pro, and Mac OS X v10.5. Some time ago, I had to blow out and reinstall my Windows installation because it had developed errors, but this also blew out my GRUB, leaving the Fedora install non-bootable. Since I never really used FC on this machine much, I didn't worry.
Lately, I've acquired an hp Mini 110, on which I'm running Linux Mint 8 (Helena), and I'd like to upgrade my FC partition on the iMac to Karmic, but when I run the installer, it won't let me use all of the existing Linux partition, instead wanting to resize it to accommodate both FC and Ubuntu.
How do I make the installer simply replace FC with Karmic, using the entire existing partition? I'm sure earlier versions of Linux that I've used had a simple "erase all Linux partitions and install" option, and the "Manual" option doesn't appear to read the existing partition information (I was too afraid to go any further).
I ended up quitting the installer, which put me into the Live CD environment, where I used the File Browser to "Format..." the Linux partition, but when I went back to the installer, I ran into the same problem, and it didn't seem to matter if I unmounted the existing partitions or not.
I recently got a Dell Netbook Mini10v with Ubuntu 8.04 preinstalled. It does not give the option to upgrade using the normal features in the GUI (as far as I can tell) how should I go about upgrading my system to 9.10?
Error during commit 'E:Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on mountall' Restoring original system state
Yeah...that's what I get every time I try to upgrade to lucid lynx.
NOTE: I haven't updated for quite some time. I may have gotten one or two updates for karmic but that was it. Just thought it might be important....
NOTE: Also not sure if this is important, but karmic installed and did some funny stuff to itself. My desktop no longer exists. It just isn't there. Also, when I try to turn of my computer it gets all kinds of errors and eventually I have to just pull the plug....something about a dev loop0 right after is says its deactivating swap...
I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.
Is it possible to upgrade a Slackware installation from a freshly d-loaded DVD? How would one go about this? Would the procedures in the Upgrade.txt work? I would assume they would need to be modified a bit, though, since I'm only upgrading the same version of Slackware. I'm not going from say 13.1 to 13.37. I just want to update a 13.37 current that I installed about three weeks ago to the now final release 13.37. If I could get my silly Trendnet TEW 423IP wireless PCI card to work in Slack, I could upgrade the normal way with Slackpkg.
I had a nicely working karmic 64bit/windows XP install, but the "upgrade" button to 10.04 has finally got the better of me. Now, when the PC boots up, the following failure occurs:Memory CheckPCI device listingVerifying DMI Pool Data ......error: no such device:e9eb88c2-67f2-47a7-bf9d-50b77b2d3480grub rescue>_Some more information.linux is on sdb1when I type "ls" I get: "(hd0) (hd1) (fd0)"however, I've not managed to get "ls (hd1,1)" or similar to do anything, the best I get is "error: no such partition".the command "find /boot/grub/grub.conf" results in the error "Unknown command 'find'"I've tried swapping the boot order in the bios from hd0 to hd1 but that has made no difference. There is no grub loader, no linux, no windows, no operating system of anykind, just the "grub rescue>" prompt.
I just upgraded Firefox from updated yet ancient version 3.0.17 to modern 3.6 using Firefox-stable repository March 15, 2010 update: Firefox 3.6 works perfectly on Hardy 8.04 using firefox-stable repository Quote: Originally Posted by OUTDATED INFORMATION SINCE THE BUG WAS FIXED I ran into two problems.

I have an ubuntu server with a printer plugged to it through USB. I used to set the server ip on the Printing panel to print remotelly to it, but it doesn't work anymore since I upgraded to karmic. I can see the printer in the printer panel, and I can even print a test page through the panel, but I can't print from any other application. When I come to the printing screen, the printer has the message retrieving information from printer and I can't print. I guess the cups server is working well as I can print the test page, and I used to print with hardy, looks like if the changes made in the printing panel don't have any effect on the system.
I loaded ATI graphics driver, and it stopped Karmic from booting.I boot from Hardy GRUB, and added only the main entry for Karmic, not the recovery menu entry, so...I need to somehow reconfigure Karmic X to NOT load ATI driver, but VESA driver.edit:How do I find the Karmic GRUB? If I can point Hardy GRUB -> Karmic GRUB, then I can do Karmic recovery mode, to reconfigure Karmic X...
I reinstalled Ubuntu on my HP pc-40 computer. I used to run Hardy Heron and am now running Karmic Koala. The cd drive which had had issues for a while, broke after finishing the install, when I tried to get the cd out.I dont know if this has anything to do with it, or if my computer is too old for Karmic Koala, or if possibly the harddrive didn't appreciate being overwritten a second time - but the graphics are not working well (small squares of previous windows linger in my present browser window*)everythin is much slower, and many applications come up without a border, or their windows cant be moved with the mouse.
To top it off, while I tried to fix a bug with the terminal (no border) and uninstalled it, I couldnt install it back. So no terminal, which really makes even a newbie like me sad.If I cant solve it in a few days I will probably try to install a smaller distro via USB - I think Slax can be installed straight to USB without a live cd?
Recently I upgraded from my long outdated Kubuntu 6.06 dapper installation to the new LTS, 8.04 hardy. Ever since everything has been working smoothly and going well, but there's one problem: I can't mount either my external USB HDD or my SD card in my USB card reader. When I try to mount either in Konqueror (Media:/) by right clicking on the device and clicking Mount I get this:Code:mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other errorIn some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or soI also get this in the console:Code:mattmodica@Dothan:/media$ sudo mount sda1[mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstabmount: can't find sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtabmattmodica@Dothan:/media$The first method I tried (doing it in Konqueror) worked in dapper 6.06 just fine.If I run dmesg | tail in console I get this:
I'm trying to set up my internal network to use my Karmic computer as a gateway to get my girlfriend online, but I'm having some issues. I've seen a few tutorials online and saw Firestarter mentioned, since it was supposed to do what I wanted, I figured I'd give it a try.I went through the setup wizard, set wlan0 as the internet connection and set eth0 as the network to which it should share my internet connection. Unfortunately when I started it up I got the error that eth0 wasn't ready.
I know it's a bit complicated but she doesn't want to haul her computer upstairs or to the other side of the house to connect to the upstairs router nor does she want to buy a better antenna like mine, and I don't want to route ethernet cable through the house because I'm lazy. Since I know this can be done through software with the setup I have, I want to do it.I think one problem has to do with too many DHCP servers (both wireless routers have DHCP on and I can enable it on my desktop, but I'm not sure which ones to turn on or off) and I think somewhere in this network I need to set a static IP for her at least desktop if not both desktops..So I've been through a few configs and I haven't had any luck so far but none of them were necessarily according to howtos, rather they were how I gathered it should all be setup from research.
Am I correct in understanding that it ought to be possible to upgrade to a new version (say Karmic > Lucid) by using the Alternative ISO on a USB stick or CD?
If so, how? I should point out that I have tried this several times but the upgrade process always stalls (probably a timed out), suggesting it is looking for a network connection.
After days of trying to get a TL-WN321G usb driver to install in Hardy Heron, it finally arrived in the proper place. In trying to then set it up, I got as far as enabling roaming mode, and the icon showed that the system had made a connection to my Belkin-ASDL-G router. I launched Firefox, which momentarily showed Google home page(where I'd been last when using a wired lan), then it changed to "Server not found". I've tried rebooting several times, but it remains the same. Each time the dongle led lights up, the icon shows it trying to make a connection to the correct network, but it fails to do so.
On another pc on this network, I looked in the router settings for DHCP client list, and this client has now vanished from the list where it had been showing before. Possible complications may come from a setting in the client list that still shows up with the same host name, generated by an earlier attempt with a different usb dongle.
So two questions - do I need to find out how to remove the old client first, if so how ? And secondly, does anyone recognize the symptoms and can offer a solution ?
After I upgrading from Karmic to Lucid, I haven't been able to update my version further and also running apt-get shows error... Can anyone tell me why this is happening?
using Hardy Heron on a old Thinkpad T41.This is a fresh install system and I noticed it kept dropping wireless connection. After google around, seems like this is a common problem? Then I switched to wired network, and turned out the same thing happens again. Looks like doesn't matter wired or wireless, it kept dropping itself from time to time. fter checking syslog, I found something interesting...it kept complain eth0 is invalid, then it said it found a better connection?I found that extremely weird..

I've had issues with the later versions of Ubuntu, so in an effort to road-test Firefox 3.5 on Hardy I'd like to change my Karmic/Hardy dual boot to a Hardy/Hardy dual boot, and follow the instructions in [URL] to put the Mozilla build of 3.5 on the new installation.
I can't see any reason why a Hardy/Hardy dual-boot shouldn't work, but does anyone know of any issues with this I might not be aware of?
I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 then discovered that, in openoffice.org-writer, the text in the UI is gone. It's strange because the text to be edited is still there. So maybe it's a font or rendering problem but I suspect something related to the window manager is going wrong. I have checked and re-installed openoffice but I haven't been able to fix this so far.
When I installed Ubuntu, I installed the Hardy Heron version. I kept on forgetting to upgrade my system when a new version of Ubuntu came out and now I am considerably behind. I want to upgrade to Karmic, but I can't find out how to do it without upgrading to Impala, then Jaunty, then Karmic. Is there a possible way I can avoid upgrading three times and only do it once?
