Ubuntu Installation :: Software Centre Is Not Working / "Crash Report Detected" Keeps Popping Up?
Jan 1, 2010
Hi everyone,
Encountering several problems with ubuntu. I have managed to burn iso to cd - I decided to bot ubuntu off the cd, I have been struggling with a couple of problems all to no avail. I have heard ubuntu is pretty damn good, and I was quite enthusiastic about it. But if I can't get this sorted...
Oh I should also say I have never used a command line and I have not a clue about xorg or whatever you call it.
anyway my first problem is Display settings. I can go to System > Preferences > Display, and the largest I can set my resolution to is 800*640 and the monitor is unknown...?
Problem number 2 - the ubuntu software centre is not working... Applications > USC > Could not launch Ubuntu Software Centre..
Problem 3 - In the bar at the top of the screen beside time and date etc, "Crash report detected" keeps popping up?
Problem 4 my @ and " keys have swapped places??? also my Pounds sign (I live in UK) has been replaced with # while # has been replaced with
I have been working for a couple of hours on it but nothing makes the slightest bit of difference. I will probably have some more problems soon to be honest - but your help with the above problems would be honestly fantastic.
edit: Yea I cant install flash player to watch videos on .....?
Applications > Acessories > Terminal will not bring anything up anyway!
I was intending to do a clean install of 10.04.I have downloaded and burned desktop-i386.iso.After booting from CD and selecting install from the menu, I get the splash screen for a few minutes, then black screen, then purple ubuntu screen, then the error message "the installer has encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run etc.....".
I am thinking this may be related to ACPI, because when i 'Try Ubuntu without installing' it loads ok but I get a 'Crash Report' notification on the panel.
If again 'Try Ubuntu without installing' with F6 option "ACPI=Off" it loads up with no problem.
Another thing I noticed is that when I load with ACPI=OFF, my external drives automount, but if i dont turn ACPI off, and get the Crash report notification the external drives do not automount.
Today I upgraded my 10.10 to 11.04. Since the last step of upgrading, when it was restarted, I get stucked in consola where it is checking, and there is written fail at stopping automatic crash report generation. How can I repair it. I tried to do
I'm a satisfied user of ubuntu 11.04 64bit (installed on a laptop). Everything works fine (unity, sound etc) no problems at all except that when I shutdown my computer on of the services is marked as FAIL.
In a boot log I found: * Stopping automatic crash report generation[74G[[31mfail[39;49m] Ok updating, nothing serious, can be ignored or uninstalled.
just installed Fedora 13 on a pentium 4 laptop by Dell, with 1 Gb RAM.
As I opt for Compiz, it cannot start, there is a black pop up saying Crash, and some numbers follow. How can this be fixed?
Should I install KDE?
Is there an update of software?
I can opt for Compiz but worry that it will be faulty. That is the second attempt also produced the crash warning pop up but gave me the option of keeping it or going back after about twenty seconds, with the figures on the screen. I played it safe. Also can I try it, and manually go back?
Error report shows Compiz killed by Signal 11 SIGSEGV, this was added after post 9.
Recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (I think) on my laptop as a dual boot with windows. Now, whenever I start my computer, the grub menu boots and I choose to run the generic ubuntu.
However, I get the message: Stopping Automatic Crash Report Generation [FAIL]
And the screen freezes at that. No further progress is made and I have to restart my computer. The only way I can run ubuntu is by running it in safe mode with low graphics.
im needing to view a adobe flash crash report, or preferably watch the crash happen(in the code)
Ubuntu 11.04(up to date) flash plugin - v11,0,1,98 flash aid - adobe beta, from adobe labs Firefox - 6.0(according to the "about firefox")
i have installed and reinstalled both the flash player and flash aid is there a way to do this and how?the player works on some sites and not others is it possible that im up to date and there not?
When I'm not connected with the LAN, I have no problem, but when I'm connected the PC frozen in the first boot. Maybe is something related with Firefox, or some specific site (I think gmail). I have many tabs opened, then when I start Firefox they all opened. The first thing I do is read my emails, so I access gmail.
I'm not sure if it is related with Firefox or Gmail. I'll do some tests, like: 1- start the PC and don't use Firefox in the first minutes. 2- start Firefox and don't access gmail
What I think it is interesting is that it only happens once. Well, this is a good thing. There's also an exclamation sign in the Ubuntu tool bar saying "Crashing report detected"
I am getting an error when i generat a report with squid's report generator ( sarg )is there a tool or way that i can find where in the log file the error is, the log file is 61442 lines, and it's gonna take me forever to find the error,
When I run Ubuntu Software Centre all I get now is one of two results:1. Ubuntu Software Centre starts up but with only a blank screen.2. Ubuntu Software Centre starts up but then seems to stall with a central circle icon whizzing around.either way, nothing else happens, i.e. it goes no further no matter how long I wait. I have logged out/back in and also restarted completely. No change.I have run synaptic package manager and reinstalled Ubuntu Software Centre. No change.

I opened a video in ..... by using Mozilla browser. It gave me option to install additional plugin "Adobe flash player" and I accepted it. I checked it in Ubuntu Software Centre and it is installed but now its not working?
I've been hunting for solutions to my soundcard troubles, but so far nothing seems to have resolved it.In a nutshell, I have a 5.1 speaker set up, but the centre and subwoofer speakers are not producing any sound under linux. My soundcard is a Creative SB X-Fi XtremeGamer.
I have been using dropbox for quite some time but in the last few days I have been bumping into a problem.Recently I had a fresh install (GNOME3 and afterwards added KDE 4.6) and after installing dropbox I get the following error:
Code: *** glibc detected *** /home/filipe/.dropbox-dist/dropbox: double free or corruption (!prev): 0xb3d44d08 *** and dropbox terminates...
Recently xsane has stopped detecting my MFP (HP Deskjet F2280). My setup has not had any hardware changes and the only software changes in that time have been the periodic Synaptic updates. Before this hiccup all had been well for over a year. If I run xsane it thinks a while (10 sec?) and tells me in a little panel no devices were detected. If I run lsusb, it finds the device, but after all it is a printer/scanner and the printing function continues to be OK so this is not a surprise.
I do not know enough to understand all the lsusb output to know if anything is amiss in the detail. What is it that xsane needs so that it detects the device as a scanner? Is there a file or specific stuff in a file which I could get from an old backup or edit (carefully!) by hand? I don't need the scanning function often enough to pin down what might have done the mischief.
i installed a linux flavor (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 11.04, and then Linux Mint).. They all gave this same problem about the wired network (see the picture). The connection seems to be fine but i can't connect to internet or even to my router. Which is weird since it knows my router IP 192.168.1.79. Wasted the whole night trying to figure it out but i just can't understand why. I have a separate partition on this computer to run Win7 also and confirmed that the network connection is working.
frequently getting a red symbol on my taskbar with the message "crash detected in abrt-gui ...".What program is producing this? There is no indication of what action I'm supposed to take, so the message is not useful. It also seems to violate a basic principle that any program producing an error message should announce its own name.
I'm running slackware 12.2 and I have yet to get the b44 kernel driver working with 2.6.27.31 (custom build, b44 compiled in). Does it require a firmware cutter (ex. b43-fwcutter)? Does it work in later kernel versions out-of-the-box?
On a second note, if it is better supported in later kernels, would it be problematic to upgrade kernels (for instance, anything other than just building the new kernel via instructions in the Slackbook)?
I have searched many times but just have come across "it should work" which it doesn't, at least here...
I am having a problem getting my Vodafone PAYG Huawei K3565 Rev 2 mobile broadband to be recognised and/or connect in 9.10

The advice is to add
[URL]
to the apt sources. (replacing cz as required for several other servers of choice). I tried this (using several different servers) from within Ubuntu Software Centre, but the usb_modeswitch never appeared. In fact (oddly) the source never appeared in the list! (Although I did have a look in the etc/apt/sources.list and it had added a line each time - there were several - I'd tried quite a few!!!) I did try downloading it but when it starts gdebi to install, a message pops up saying it is available (and better supported!) in a software channel.
I searched round a bit and found another reference to the package at
[URL]
This time the sources were totally different and the apt line recommended was
deb [URL]
When I add this it does add the line to the list of sources, but sadly I still cannot see usb_modeswitch after Software Centre has updated. In fact the number of packages available seems to go down from 2186 to 2179!
I suppose I could force the debian package to install, but I don't see why I can't get it to appear in Software Centre!
I should perhaps add that I have added other sources using the "apt sources" and that worked OK so I know I am doing the right thing.
my problem is simple: the software centre and firefox do not run when i try to launch them from any icon or with Alt+F2. The "Window List" app in the bottom panel shows "Starting Ubuntu Soft..." or "Starting Mozilla Firefox" but that just disappears again after a few seconds and thats it (no error message whatsoever). I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 (new install - no upgrade) and it runs without problems on my other computer.
Ps: I managed to get firefox running with 'gksudo firefox' but not the software centre (i am not so good with all the commands yet ) and i dont want to have to do that alle the time
Tried to start Software Centre today in Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition. It never started, showed the "starting software centre" message then stalled for a few moments and then nothing. "gksu software-center" in terminal returns this error;
Code: dan@Viktor:~$ gksu software-center Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/software-center", line 80, in <module> app = SoftwareCenterApp(datadir, xapian_base_path)
Ubuntu software centre can't find anything to download and when I Atempt to open Synaptic I get This Error: E: Type '<!DOCTYPE' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
after having used 9.10 KK for quite some time now, i got curious about the games.i notice that while i am trying to install some of them - Airstrike, ACM Serial Combat Simulator, 20.000 Light Years Into Space etc, i am not able to do so.i a message box saying the following " Requires Installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources.can anyone please let me know who i can install such games ? and since there seems to be such a security threat how do i distinguish the 'bad' from the 'good' games.
I think it's an excellent distro. I am currently dual booting Windows and Xubuntu. When I run the Software Centre it attempts to load, then quits. I tried running from the terminal using
I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 several times recently and everytime I am asked for my password to install software via the Software Centre, the password field accepts my password and disappears, leaving the rest of the popup box open. Then a few minutes later the popup disappears and i'm unable to install the software.
i have justed installed xubuntu 10.04 and the first thing i wanted to do is download some software via the software centre but it seems it is not working. When i click it via applications i can see something loading at the bottom and the it dissappears
the computer is hooked to the internet, but when i try to reload synaptic pachage manager or try to install a software that is among the repositories i get always a few errors like:
w: failed to fetch http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...ic/release.gpg could not resolve 'username'
w: failed to fetch http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tion-en_ca.bz2 could not resolve 'username'
w: some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
if i try to install a new software using ubuntu software centre i get "canonical provides critical updates for mysql client." i press the right arrow and nothing happens!even when i try to install adobe flash player i get in the final step the same errors of synaptic package manager. so far i can't watch videos. what can i do to fix this problem?
I am a new ubuntu user, I downloaded it because it was recommended over windows for programming uses. I am new to Ubuntu, and everytime I try and download something from the Ubuntu software center an error pops up saying: "Requires installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." It does this for everything I try and download.
