Strange that there is still the missing icon issue in Ubuntu Software Center.

Apr 29, 2010I already restored regular icons by going to gconf. However, the icons on top right where the "power" button is located, still have no icons. Is there any way to add icons to the hibernate/ shut down , etc words?

Dec 27, 2010became immediate to me is that the docks on the top and left sides of the screen lack icons.On top of that, when you hover over where I suppose icons should be, the black tooltip that comes up is labeled with a white rectangular block instead of telling me what the icon represents. It looks as if the applications function fine regardless of this phenomena; I can click on different parts on the dock and the icons' links still pull up the program with no issue.
Opening up Firefox, however, led to the screen flashing a colorful pixelated pattern that looks like what happens to an image when you take it into Photoshop and run it through a coarse mezzotint filter. It flashes occasionally while using Firefox, both around the window, on top of the window, and on the entire screen. I've also found that I can't run Firefox for more than five-ten minutes without the system freezing on me (mouse won't move, screen doesn't change).
Ubuntu Installation :: Dell Inspiron Missing Essential Desktop Icons?
Mar 9, 2011A friend of mine, who doesnt understand computers at all, had a virus on her Dell Inspiron 6000 (2-GHz Pentium M processor, 1GB of DDR400 DRAM) laptop. She was unable to boot it up.
So i advised her to boot up Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition. I was instructing her over emesene, so it was quite difficult at times, however, she complained that when she loaded up and went through all the instructions as per the netbook "how to", she only got a purple screen.
After a while, we managed to get her to the actual ubuntu screen, however the icons down the left hand side were all missing. I have a feeling this is something to do with the Graphics Processor: integrated Intel GMA 900 graphics, or ATI Mobility Radeon X300.
I asked her to try and get online but she couldnt so i asked her to find the drivers for her network card and she couldn't find them.
I then asked her to update drivers but they wouldnt update and no drivers were found.
I really want her to get up and running with ubuntu and convert her, but its really frustrating, not getting her online and up and running. But she wants to load XP professional.

Feb 16, 2010I have a My book usb drive that in the provious install would show up with a My book icon as a "drive" on my desk top, in PLaces it shows as a blank icon.. for some reason the icon does not appear on my desktop, like normal, examples plug in ipod, ipod icon shows up, usb mini drive, that shows up?Also this could be related .. but my Pidgen icon on the tack bar does not show anymore... it used to be that I opened it and a little green icon sat by the clock?

Ubuntu :: Desktop-icons Missing Sometimes?
Sep 1, 2011Sometime (once every 4-5 time) when I boot my machine the desktop icons are missing and I have to log out and in again to get them back.
Besides that the systems works fine.
I am running Natty 64 bit with a GTX275 graphicscard and the latest drivers from X updates.
You can see the problem illustrated below.
It looks like som kind of compiz related problem.
Fedora :: Icons Missing In Fedora Icons Theme?
Nov 24, 2009yesterday I upgraded my Fedora installation via preupgrade from 11 to 12.Now there are some icons missing! If I go to the 'System' menu in the panel, there are no icons at all.If then I select the 'Settings' submenu, all of its icons are visible.I figured out that the package redhat-menus and fedora-icon-theme make up the representation of this icons and reinstalled them. Then I additionally executed 'gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders-64 > /etc/gtk-2.0/x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf.loaders' (I read this somewhere in the forum).
But nothing happend so far?!
I made further efforts trying to find out the icon of the System Configuration Menu (Syst -> Administration). The file '/usr/share/desktop-directories/SystemConfig.directory' contains the icon that should be displayed for the System->Administration menu. This file contains the line: Icon=preferences-system Good so far.I thought that selecting the gnome icon theme would fix this problem, but this also didn't help!Now I'm at the end of my knowledge (or I don't want to rename single icons to match the names required)...

how to reproduce:
open firefox, download and install some plugins/addons that generate menu entries with an icon in front of them.
e.g. "downthemall" (down them all)

there is however space for these icons in the menu. and I can see icons in the bookmark and history menus. (web page favicons)
these icons improve the usability greatly because they offer a visual guide to the menu not only to the item they belong to but also to other items because I know that the item I want is e.g. one above the green triangle.
I have a slightly impaired vision so this a far greater issue to me than you well sighted folks may think. Just put on some glasses with lots of fingerprints on them and you will see the difference.

I have checked 'show menu icons' option in Xubuntu settings, and all gtk apps have their icons. Skype is a Qt app however. VLC is also a Qt app, and it's missing its icons, too.

Apr 29, 2011I've just installed the new Ubuntu 11.04 and encountered a strange problem. The Launcher bar appears, everything is ok, but i can see no icon on the Unity Launcher. When i move the mouse over the launcher, it tells me where the icons should be. The apps also open when I click in those places. But NO icon? Can anybody tell me why is this happening? It is very annoying. I would accept it easier if it didn't work at all.. but not this way.

Mar 12, 2010I am having a problem getting my Vodafone PAYG Huawei K3565 Rev 2 mobile broadband to be recognised and/or connect in 9.10

to the apt sources. (replacing cz as required for several other servers of choice). I tried this (using several different servers) from within Ubuntu Software Centre, but the usb_modeswitch never appeared. In fact (oddly) the source never appeared in the list! (Although I did have a look in the etc/apt/sources.list and it had added a line each time - there were several - I'd tried quite a few!!!) I did try downloading it but when it starts gdebi to install, a message pops up saying it is available (and better supported!) in a software channel.
I searched round a bit and found another reference to the package at

This time the sources were totally different and the apt line recommended was
deb [URL]
When I add this it does add the line to the list of sources, but sadly I still cannot see usb_modeswitch after Software Centre has updated. In fact the number of packages available seems to go down from 2186 to 2179!
I suppose I could force the debian package to install, but I don't see why I can't get it to appear in Software Centre!
I should perhaps add that I have added other sources using the "apt sources" and that worked OK so I know I am doing the right thing.
Ubuntu Installation :: Software Centre And Firefox Do Not Run?
Jan 6, 2011my problem is simple: the software centre and firefox do not run when i try to launch them from any icon or with Alt+F2. The "Window List" app in the bottom panel shows "Starting Ubuntu Soft..." or "Starting Mozilla Firefox" but that just disappears again after a few seconds and thats it (no error message whatsoever). I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 (new install - no upgrade) and it runs without problems on my other computer.
Ps: I managed to get firefox running with 'gksudo firefox' but not the software centre (i am not so good with all the commands yet ) and i dont want to have to do that alle the time

Ubuntu :: U11.04 Unity Panel Icons Missing / Get Them Back?
May 5, 2011After playing around with Ubuntu Tweaks to remove the "Recent Documents" logging, I somehow ended up losing the icons for "Applications" and "Files & Folders".
I tried lots of different things but the only thing that seemed to sort it was this:
Log out. Log in under Ubuntu Classic (for some reason dropping back to tty with Ctr, Alt and F2 didn't do it). Bring up the terminal and do code...
Log back into Ubuntu (not classic) and hopefully, you should end up with all icons back as they were.
This worked for me but I can't remember if I'd gotten rid of the ".recent-documents.xbel" file in my home folder first, so if all else fails you could try that before you start removing and re-installing Unity.
Fedora :: 15 Application Icons Missing?
Aug 3, 2011I am reasonably experienced with Fedora 15 - having used two systems upgraded from Fedora 14. I had a strange problem with a brand-new Dell Vostro 3550 laptop with clean a Fedora 15 x86-64 installation. I chose to download the boot image and install from the network. I selected packages for software development without customizing anything. The installation went on smoothly. Once I started using the system, I used yum to install several additional packages. Strangely the icons for these applications seem to be missing.Screenshot1 shows that both Thunderbird and Remmina (for remote desktop) icons shown generic icon.Screenshot2 shows the Default Applications tab in the System Info where Thunderbird does not have an icon.

There are also no icons in task managers for all kde-based applications like konsole,dolphin etc.. But for non-kde application like firefox, wicd and xmms, the icons show up in task manager. I have tried reinstalling kdebase, kdebase-runtime and kde-userspace with no luck.
