Installation :: Ubuntu 10.10 Fglrx Constantly Crashing / Revert It To 10.04?

Dec 1, 2010

i have a multi-monitor setup running two ati radeon 4870 cards.

after upgrading to 10.10 from 10.04 fglrx is constantly crashing. it works with some applications such as the browsers chrome, firefox and other applications such as nautilus but if i try to view videos or even open another application i use often keepassx it will crash to a terminal screen.

ubuntu 10.10 is very unusable in this current state, is there a way i can easily revert to 10.04? i have tried the ubuntu provided driver after fully purging fglrx as well as the one provided by ati and to no luck.

Ubuntu Installation :: Revert To The Old Fglrx?

May 8, 2011

In an attempt to correctly play Half-Life 2 in Wine, I installed the AMD driver downloaded from their site.

Code:

sudo sh ati-driver-installer-11-4-x86.x86_64.run

Reboot. Now, with both FireGL and this running a conflict is created. Naturally the system boots into command prompt. So:

[code]...

Reboot. Got OpenGL, but performance is choppy. Glxgears is very choppy. So how to revert to the old fglrx? There is an uninstall script at /usr/share/ati. Shall I run that or shall I reinstall all of the above removed packages beforehand?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Constantly Crashing?

Apr 30, 2011

I've managed to install the 32bit version on my laptop with little issue, and I'm really liking the Unity interface. There's a few issues around customisation and minor usability quirks, but from my experience with things like KDE4, I'm guessing it's only time. Anyway, I've been having major problems getting the 64bit version running with my Desktop. I have 8Gb of RAM in that, so it's not really an option to use the 32bit version. The Installer crashes constantly, but I was able to upgrade from 10.10 using update manager, but unfortunately Natty is no more stable than it's installer.

While logging in, or shortly after, the machine will crash to a text console displaying a Kernel Panic message. There's also messages indicating a problem with the CPU MCE. I've tried setting various kernel parameters at boot, such as nomce and nomodeset, these have extended the time the machine is up before crashing out, and removed the Kernel panic message, but not the crashes. I'm guessing the MCE messages were unrelated or a symptom in this case.I've done a huge amount of searching, and found no suggestions that I haven't already tried. Running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit the system is rock solid.

Debian Multimedia :: Jessie 64-bit Steam Crashing With AMD Fglrx Drivers

Sep 24, 2015

I recently switched over to Debian 8 "Jessie" (64-bit Cinnamon flavor) on my Desktop.

250GB SSD
16 GB DDR3 RAM
i7 4790 Processor
AMD Radeon R9 280X

I have been able to play multiple games on Steam without any issues, however I have downloaded Ark: Survival Evolved and am unable to actually play that game in particular. I can log in and get to a point of choosing a server, but after it actually loads to the game(where it starts rendering graphics), the game crashes to the desktop. Below is the readout of the crash from when I loaded Steam via Terminal.

Code: Select all
    Signal 11 caught.
ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/lukasz/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object '/home/lukasz/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.

[Code] ....

I have noticed that the above (zenity:13343): Gtk-WARNING line in terminal is the point at which the game crashes. It would appear that the steam gameoverlayrenderer.so is a separate issue and may be a common occurence in the background that you just don't see.(?)

Things that I have done thus far:

-Verified that the video card is good
-Tried Open-source graphics drivers
-Currently using the AMD 15.9 Proprietary Drivers directly from AMD with Catalyst Control Center.
-Reinstalled "zenity" to ensure that it was not corrupted.
-Verified which Gtk+ versions that I have installed(see below)

Code: Select all
    lukasz@Lukasz-Desktop:~$ pkg-config --modversion gtk+-2.0 gtk+-3.0
    2.24.25
    3.14.5

Is there a "default" gtk+ version that I have to alter for it to recognize that I have Gtk+ 3.0 installed, or did I miss something somewhere?

My hypothesis:

-It has something to do with 32-bit/64-bit conflictions(Maybe the game? My steam is 64-bit)
-My graphics card may not be supported by Ark: Survival Evolved yet.
-I am missing some libraries each time I have attempted different video drivers.
-Something with steam did not get installed correctly(I have not attempted to uninstall and reinstall it, however other games function correctly)

Ubuntu Installation :: Revert Install Usb To Regular Usb On Mac?

Aug 15, 2010

I made a usb install drive on a mac by following the instructions on the ubuntu download page, but had problems getting the GRUB loader to run the USB at boot on the DreamLinux PC i wanted to install it on, so I have now sorted access to a CD writer to make a liveCD.

However I need to convert the USB FDD back to just a regular FDD for my mother to use. I am not at all familiar with Macs, or the terminal utilities (though I am able to use the terminal to some degree) so would appreciate help with this procedure or a pointer to some steps to do it.

Currently the drive is named Ubuntu 10.04 LTS when it mounts on mac, before the img write it was just untitled, I cannot delete the ubuntu files from it or write new ones, and I don't know how to do a reformat on a mac.

I need he drive to be able to work again with windows and mac... so will need to reformat to FAT32 I guess?

Ubuntu :: Computer Constantly Crashes After Installation?

Jun 14, 2010

We've had a very big problem with our computer chrashing for a while, and I'm not sure if it's Linux Ubuntu that's the problem or not be we'd like some feedback from the experts of this forum. I hope I'm posting this in the right place. So, a while back we had Windows XP on our machine, and it had been running well (as well as XP is capable anyway, ), but for some reason it wouldn't boot XP properly and would only allow us to open it in Safe Mode.

We opened up the computer to take the memory chips out and back in, just in case that would help, and the inside was terribly dusty. Also, we have a loose heatsink, and the chip underneath is filled with dust. Not sure what the chip is I'll try to get some picture of it pretty soon. Anyway, the inside of the machine obviously wasn't too good.

So, we installed Linux Ubuntu LTS 10.04 on it from a CD to try to fix the booting problem, and this worked -- but now, our computer crashes constantly after turning on. It crashes whatever we're doing -- we can do something light, like Google Chrome, or something heavy, like video editing, and have it crash on us. So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the programs or anything -- I'm guessing it's either an issue with the computer itself or an error with the operating system. Sometimes we're lucky and can be on the computer for half-hour to and hour and a half, but it's still really bothersome, and will get in the way of any projects that require saving or recording. I'd guess it crashes around 10-20 times a day.

I included a video of it crashing and what it does just in case that could be of any help. Link: [URL]... The screen goes blank for a moment -- shows oddly colored, fragmented bars in the center of the screen (sometimes red, sometimes silver), shows this text:

Code:
* Speech-dispatcher configured for user sessions
* Starting the Winbind daemo
winbind [ OK
* Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd [ OK
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions

Ubuntu Installation :: Logon Loop And Need To Revert To Older Version

Feb 5, 2010

Ever since updating to 9.10 from 9.04 I have been experiencing a logon loop problem. Maybe 1 in 15 tries is successful. When I was able to logon I was not able to mount the multi-boot Hd.. (Windows NTFS, Linux root Sda2, Home Sda3, Swap Sda4, + unallocated space). A error screen told me that I didn't have admin privileges.. Thats incorrect as I'm the only user and logged on at the time. Some other changes I tried also produced the same error. I found some clues on this forum to address the logon issue, and changed my resolution to 1280 x960 and that seems to let me logon each time as needed. But trying to mount the hd still results in the error message.

I cannot use the computer at the current resolution, too hard on the eyes.. (don't know how anyone could). My question is... Since I have the live CD for version 9.04 and that version worked just fine, how should I or do I need to delete ver 9.10 and than reinstall version 9.04? If I run the 9.04 install program will it automatically choose the Sda2 partition, or do I need to precondition and define Sda2 & Sda3, & swap drives again? Will it perform the installation seeing that theres a newer version already on the hd? Also is there a option to uncheck so I won't get any auto-updates because it appears that the newer version is not compatible with my computer.

Oddly sometimes it shows disconnected for no reason and I have to reboot. What's even worst is that Ubuntu now locks up completely within 15 minutes of a reboot.None of the alt+sysrq commands do anything! How do I find out what the updates were and is there any way to I revert my system back to pre updates without having to reinstall?

Ubuntu Installation :: FGLRX Status On 10.04 Upgrade Warning?

Oct 17, 2010

I am running 8.04 on a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop. (My Toshiba model is unfortunately the one with the Phoenux BIOS)I have been happy with 8.04 LTS for quite some time now and was thinking of upgrading to 10.04 LTS, which the Update Manager says is available. I normally choose to upgrade a few months after release once things have stabilised a bit. I figured it was now time for 10.04.I accordingly have first taken all the updates for 8.04 and brought it up-to-date. Then when I click on Upgrade, I get the following messageUpgrading may reduce desktop effects and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs. This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardwarein Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Do you want to continue ?Since I wasn't sure of the exact entire implications, I said NO and exit the upgrade at that point.I then googled a bit and found this to be a pretty serious installation issue with a number of people who unfortunately have ATI display cards. But then I came across this page:Does the above link mean that this problem is now solved with respect to 10.04 as well ?Also, if not, what are the implications for me ? Does this mean I have to be stuck on 8.04 only ?If I choose to upgrade anyway, what display functionality will I lose ?I don't need Desktop Effects or other toys. But I do use GIMP quite a bit and also watch videos in multiple formats. Will I not be able to do these ?

Installing the drivers from ati webiste ends in the same result as before. Downloaded Ubunt 10.10 32 bit and installed it, same results. I have a Radeon HD 3300 integrated. I dont know what to do. The open source drivers works well, but there is no 1280x1024 resolution in the screen manage

Ubuntu Installation :: Compiz Crashes All The Time With Non-fglrx Drivers

May 5, 2010

Compiz is utterly unusable, ever since probably about 9.04 or 9.10, when Ubuntu took out the Catalyst drivers for my laptop w/ Mobility Radeon HD 2300 their less capable open-source variants, which crashes after about 15 minutes of use.

The screen gradually becomes less responsive for about 5 seconds, until it just completely freezes and becomes completely unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse commands. I tried using the RadeonHD drivers instead and the problem is still there. The 'Hardware Drivers' app in System > Administration doesn't seem to do detect any fglrx drivers for my system.

How would I get some working fglrx drivers back?

And I don't want to use Metacity anymore.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-23-generic-pae Breaks Fglrx

Jun 30, 2010

I have an ATI radeon HD 3400 series video card, and the open-source drivers make my computer run really hot. I tried installing FGLRX by using "Check For New Hardware Drivers", but it did not work, so I installed the ATI catalyst 10.5 package from AMD's website, and am using Xserver-xorg-core-1.7.6-2ubuntu7+backclear1 from k0ekk0ek's PPA so there is no lag when minimizing windows and such.

Everything was perfect until the 2.6.32-23 kernel update came along. I let it update, and rebooted, but the ATI driver no longer starts, even when I uninstall and reinstall it.

I am just using the 2.6.32-22 kernel for now, as the 2.6.32-23 kernel still runs hot without the ATI driver enabled. I would like to start using the new kernel at some point...
